Edit: I checked his numbers. Last seasons numbers were not great even if his relative is ok. This season is 9 games which isn't enough for me.</div></div>
He's an excellent young defenseman. Don't sleep on him. Not saying that because he's on our team. Saying so because I've watched this team at their worst and he's exactly what we've been pining for. He's as good as Barrie, now.
Were the games you watched from the beginning of last year? He had a slow start and got better, then regressed a bit and then took off. So meandered a bit. You know, as rookies do.

Hot take alert.
Koskinen?
The guy who Kevin Woodley called a top-7 goalie in the NHL last season, was 0.01 off Markstrom last season in sv%?
The same guy who stopped 43/44 against Calgary the other night?
Right.
Bottom 3.
Carry on.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ABOVEAVERAGEHOCKEYFAN</b></div><div>This trade wouldn't appeal to either team, Petry would be a great addition to Edmonton's blue line and a massive upgrade from Nurse, but I don't see this trade going through because of Prices contract (Petry's contract could also be a turn off for Oilers due to his age and the term on his deal). Price is highly skilled but he is essentially a $7 mil backup goalie (With the retained salary) and Edmonton would probably want a good middle six forward in place of him to temporary replace nuge. I also don't see why the Canadians would need another top six forward (on an expiring deal) and would want to swap Petry (who is in the Norris conversation through the first 1/4 of the season) for a 2nd pairing defensman.</div></div>
Holy hot take alert.
This trade is not a fit for either team for many reasons, but none of which were listed in your post.
Nurse is unequivocally in the Norris race, he's absolutely demolishing the competition this year. And he's just entering his prime, not about to exit like Petry (whom MacT should never have traded, but it lead to Connor, so... bygones). Not to mention we don't need another top four RHD without shipping one out as we already have four on the roster.
Middle six player to replace Nuge? LOL.

Ethan lead all rookies in TOI last year and was a positive contributor playing against top competition. This season has been much the same before he got a freak concussion. Value contract, great age to improve and excellent at moving the puck. There's a lot to like.

Canucks Deadline - Read Bio
Not trading JJ for a bottom-6 LH defenseman. We already have Lagesson, Russell, KK, and Lennstrom.
I would say that Virtanen could be an interesting target but with the way JJ is playing lately (finally achieving his potential we've seen in spurts over the past few years) there's no rush to off load him.
Who would you swap for Russell, Kassian or Neal?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SweetRevenge19</b></div><div>Tampa already had Stamkos and Hedman when Yzerman came in. They weren’t picking in top 10 and the timeline was ahead of where we’re at. Neal only has two years. It won’t matter for us. And that’s exactly my point, we’re terrible with Mantha and terrible without. He’s a good player with his prime years getting wasted, better to ship him off for a player that better lines up with our timeline.</div></div>
And yet it took beyond Yz's tenure for TBY to win. They built that team through the draft.
Holland took over in EDM closer to contention than Yz did in TBY. I doubt Stevie is going to try to jumpstart the Wings by trading away core talent to bump up their draft order. He built a perennial contender in TB with astute picks in the mid to late rounds. He values a winning culture and scouting acumen. So the chances of him losing a trade of a quality player like Mantha for the likes of Neal+ to improve draft ranking is less than slim to none. It's not like he traded Stamkos or St. Louis at the peak of their powers for 10 cents on the dollar. He extracted the bulk of almost every player's value before winning the trade that sent them away. Except maybe Gudas, and that's barely a blemish on his record.

No chance you're signing Nuge as a free agent.
A) We can sign him at that price and be able to offer an eighth year already. Today's 31 Thoughts is just the latest confirmation that RNH wants to re-sign in EDM.
B) If he were to hit free agency, he'd choose a legitimate Cup contender before going back home.

I well remember how it played out at the time. Hasek was still The Dominator. Though he is more the exception than the rule as far as Holland's history with goaltenders. Wonder if he finds a way to circle back to Mrazek just for old time's sake.

Draft+2, NHL
Larkin: 80, 23-22-45 +11 (0.56 P/GP)
This is Holloway's floor next year IMO. That's already a better player than Mantha and his ceiling is higher - and he'll carry a cap hit of about $900k for the next 3 years.</div></div>
That's optimistic.
I like Holloway but he has yet to play a single game in EDM let alone prove himself better than Larkin or Mantha in the NHL. Prospects don't develop in straight lines. Having said that, he's one of the few prospects I don't trade, unless you're clearly winning the transaction.

I guess I just don't see Yz building like that. He certainly didn't in TBY. Neal has too long of a contract. DET can still be bad with Mantha and a core of quality players but no run support. Look no further than the Decade of Darkness Oilers for proof.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SweetRevenge19</b></div><div>For most teams you might be right, but Detroit is the exception.
Neal/Mantha is an even $5.7 swap. Meaning Neal’s money is already being accounted for in their cap and Detroit still has a projected $45mil in cap space entering next season. Another $3 mil opens if DeKeyser is bought out or $5mil if he goes LTIR. Following season Nielsen comes off books. And since they aren’t competitive yet, Neal’s contract isn’t prohibitive for them.</div></div>
Neal for Mantha takes DET farther from contention, not closer.
Nuge is likely what it takes to keep Yz on the phone, even when it's Old Dutch calling.

I don't see Edmonton giving up a lot for Gibson, TBH. Maybe he'll rebound, or maybe, like Matt Murray, the shooters have figured him out. But that's a lot of risk for a guy who isn't an upgrade on Mikko Koskinen.</div></div>
Gibson is absolutely an upgrade over Koskinen.
Woodguy has him as the top goalie in the league over the last four or five seasons, in a recent twitter thread.
And that's a hell of a contract now and going forward for a quality starter.

The goalie market is underwhelming, and there's not a Markstrom calibre guy this year. I don't think Binnington gets to UFA. The guys I'd look at are Raanta, Mrazek, and Driedger. Shorter term deals. I'm really intrigued by Driedger actually. He's a young guy by goalie standards (26) and his numbers are very good the last 2.5 years. If his numbers stay above average this year, he should be a guy Holland takes a long look at.</div></div>
Hold on.
There's like 25-30 quality goalies coming into UFA this off season.
I don't think I've ever seen a UFA goalie class like it before.
Many won't hit the market and will resign with their teams, but this upcoming UFA market is the deepest I can recall.
And we finally have some cap space to go fishing in the deeper end of the pool. That Holland didn't over pay Markstrom gives me hope he can get the right tender for the team going forward.

Bear's skating deficiencies are overstated. He's not the fastest but he's not slow either. Skating alongside Connor, Leon and Nurse makes most players look slow.

Unless it's part of a trade for Gibson, I'm not a fan of that route. At all. You keep Bear and trade Barrie or even let him walk. Don't overpay players for age 30+ seasons. Bear and Barrie are similar players, and Bear has room to grow, Barrie is who he is. Bear is a better defender and just as good an outlet passer, similar quality shot from the point. Bear is the guy you invest in, not Barrie.
I'd bring back Larsson if the AAV and term are commensurate with his role (3RD able to move up in a pinch for injury or slump) going forward.
