And if you're eating that much of Kuz a 1st needs to be coming back.</div></div>
Lindholm is a bona fide 1C. Over the last three seasons, he's 16th in points among centers. Kuzy is 33rd (one spot behind Chandler Stephenson). Lindholm plays about a minute more per game, and wins 53.6% of faceoff's vs. Kuzy's 44.7%. He shoots 1% better, too. He's a better shot, playing more minutes, winning wildly more of his faceoffs, and is three years younger. He's an upgrade in nearly every facet except maybe passing. There's no metric by which he is *not* a 1C.

I think the Caps would consider that - maybe better for both teams if the Caps retain $1-2mil and the picks become a 2nd and a 4th.

We don't have the cap space to roll with what we have. We're at the ceiling with 11 forwards and Patches on IR. A trade has to be coming just so we can ice a starting lineup.

Oh I don't think this actually is what happens - I'm assuming both will play, but this is just a hypothetical world where they quickly determine they can't. I would be surprised if both finish this season and come back the next year, though.

Look I love Wilson. He is one of my favorite players, hands down. But you're outright delusional if you think he's a 1-for-1 guy with Nylander or DeBrincat. He's coming off an injury, is older than both players, and has a career-high of 52 points, which would tie with DeBrincat's rookie season as his 2nd worst and be in Nylander's bottom three full-ish seasons. He'll never approach a 40 goal season, which both of these guys have multiple of and will almost certainly have again in the future. I may be overpaying for DeBrincat here, but come on.

They have to hit the cap floor now, and I think Trotz likes Kuzy. With 50% retention, it's not a big cap hit and it's only two years.

Tinsel and Garland
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SK101</b></div><div>Why wouldn’t the jackets just do the same trade to the flames and get a better player for less money</div></div>
The Blue Jackets likely value their 1st round pick more than the Caps, and are even less interested in having to extend Lindholm at the expected cost given that they just got Fantilli, who should be their 1C almost immediately. Kuzy for two years at $6mil is still a good value and fit for the team for a high-level 2C, but CBJ doesn't need to jump out and get the top dog right now. The Caps are more likely to outbid CBJ since we need a top line center (or 2C, depending on how Strome develops) and can and will extend him at the appropriate cost given the likelihood of Backstrom and/or Oshie retiring after this season, if not before.
That said, yes, CBJ "could" do this. So could other teams. But in my fantasy world that this trade happens in, they decided against it due to future costs and the net present value of their draft picks.

Highly Flammable in Cap Hell
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ktownchef</b></div><div>I get the idea that the Caps are going to go for it while they have Ovi, Backstrom and Carlson locked in for another 2-3 years respectfully. I'm just not sure the Flames deal is enough to get both of those players. I think Calgary could get more selling them off in separate deals.
Mantha to me is a cap dump so asking for a team to take on his salary and get Schmaltz also likely takes more assets. If you kept Mantha I think the value is fair.</div></div>
I could see the Caps adding something to the AZ trade or moving Mantha elsewhere.
On the Flames deal, I'm not sure they could get more. It's widely known that half the team wants out, which depresses everyone's value. This gives the Flames a younger d-man who has a QO in place coming off a season as a top-pairing guy and a third for Hanifin, then a 1st, 2nd, and 3LW for Lindholm. Snively should perform better than Lucic or Ritchie have. A third line guy isn't a sexy add, but he's cheap and hungry and can improve on exiting players, so he's not a nothing throw-in, either.

In a different draft, maybe. Not this one. The top five of this draft are all likely to be franchise players. Caps would have to throw in a reverse-protected 1st for next year - if it's *not* in the top 10, then the Caps have to throw in another first or something ridiculous like that.

Is that a problem? Every other defensemen on the Caps is the same size as Fehervary. Over the last five seasons, of the 201 defensemen who have played as many games as Marty, Girard and Sandin are top-30 in SAT%, and over 50% in all situations. MF is bottom-50 in SAT% (48.1%), bottom-30 relative to his teammates (-3.3), and worst among all Caps defensemen over that timeframe (including Matt Irwin). On a team getting older and losing offensive firepower, having two young defensemen that contribute to offense at top-pairing rates sounds pretty luxurious.

That's actually a great point re: Roslovic vs. Garland. Absolutely the right call - gonna make that change based on your and others' suggestions.
I'm frankly just not a believer in Fehervary. Puts me at odds with a lot of folks, but to my core I believe the Caps are best served moving him out ASAP for a proven guy, and if Girard is available I can't think of a better grab to make for the contract value.

ARI trade is fine I guess.
COL trade is bad. At most it would be Fehervary straight up for Girard, no addition picks. Marty is younger and cheaper, that makes up for Girard's better offense.
VAN is fine.</div></div>
If COL would make that trade straight up without the picks, holy schnikes would I jump on that. But I think you're overvaluing Marty and undervaluing Girard. Girard clocks in as an elite #2D in terms of points and ice time, while being one of the least penalized defensemen over the last five seasons. He's only 17 months older than Fehervary, so I don't think the age is a detriment - if anything, you're trading for a guy playing in his prime on an undervalued contract with significant term.
