I think that's the rub. The value seems there, but it tweaks one way or another or is a pass altogether depending on your personal player evaluation. I'm far more down on Fehervary than most Caps fans (I think he is a legitimately bad player, and most everyone else sees him as a possible top-pairing guy), and I'm high on Girardi and his potential, especially relative to his contract. It's a move I could see the teams talking about given the Avs' possible cap issues and the Caps' clear defensive/aging issues.

He's 6'1" and 199 lbs. I wouldn't call that undersized. In fact, that is the exact NHL average, and a few pounds heavier than the average center. He's improved YOY, and could be another 20-50-70 player like Strome. I'd take the chance.

If he is, even better! But I think the recent years' history still depresses the value a bit. I'm not sure if Buffalo does it, either. Really curious to hear what Sabres fans think, because I both feel that this is fair value and somehow maybe also a little light on the Caps side.

Where Were Going We Dont Need Budgets
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>qc14</b></div><div>1. I would go shorter on bridges for McM and Sandin, I don't think either has really proven they're long term pieces yet this year
2. Why buy out Kuemper just to sign Nedeljkovic and save ~$1m?
3. Would rather bring back NAK and Malenstyn than have Fischer and Sutter - don't think they would be any more expensive either
4. They're almost certainly going to have $2m in bonus overages from Pacioretty's deal
5. $60M total is the most I would give to Guentzel (around 8.5x7 or 9.5x6), don't really care about the years. Don't think he's the best fit but not many other options in FA
6. With this much space, I think you have to go out and get a legit top pair defender as well. I think the market is actually surprisingly deep there this year - Hanifin, Skjei, Pesce, Roy would all fit the bill
7. I would be very nervous having McM, Lap, Miro, and Leonard taking up 4 of my top 9</div></div>
1. I would, too, but I also would have done the same with Protas. GMBM seems to have different ideas. I think they've each done as much as he has, with higher draft capital and potential. He may be trying to solidify the near-term core of the team.
2. Term. There does not appear to be a great option in free agency, so I'd rather go for upside than downswing, have the short term small cap savings, and the long term bigger savings and roster spot.
3. I'm not a fan of either of them. I'd rather try something new, especially so if Dowd does get traded (which I didn't have happening here).
4. Maybe. In this scheme, not a big shift in strategy if he does, but he's already showing struggles to stay healthy.
5. 100% agree.
6. Also agree. Hanifin or a trade would be my choice, but I'm making the assumption the big names get signed and/or traded with extensions this offseason. The money is there.
7. Young coach, young players with little preconceived notions and high talent ceilings. I'm ready for the gamble, but it's definitely a gamble.

Yep, what he said. I definitely think the 6x8.25 is the floor for Guentzel, and he would take it for the right team (staying in Pitt would definitely be an option there). He'll be a fascinating player to see on the oPen market because I think he generally caps out at around 5x9, but some lunatic is going to come out with a 7x9.5 or something.

Avs don't have a 2nd. A 1st round pick that is likely to come at the bottom five of that round is very nearly a 2nd. If it's the bottom two, then it would have been a 2nd a few years ago. The 4th being thrown in is to shore up some of the value from it being a late 1st rather than a high 2nd.

Why not the player swap (we'll agree to disagree on interest/need for Mantha)? If you figure that each, right now, probably has a 2nd round pick coming back in terms of value, then the value is there.

I don't get it. I understand moving Mantha as a rental if the team is out of it, and moving TvR and Edmunson because we have a glut of third pairing defensemen. But why would we trade our best goalie and one of the best 4th line centers in the game when their combined cap hit is under $2.5 mil for one more year, with no real options to replace either, both for late 2nd round picks, and why would we bring back Samsonov, who sucks?

Exactly. He's kind of like Sheary 2.0. Ideally, as much as I absolutely adore Oshie, he retires and that's where Milano slots in, and we look to the market for an upgrade on NAK. But as much as Milano is not a 4th liner, Oshie is even less so.

Similarly, Lindholm is better than strome in every statistic over the same time span. Strome's ONLY advantage is that he is 3 years younger.</div></div>
I can see an argument that Strome has a more positive trend than Lindholm and has a chance at being better. My fellow Caps fans that don't see Lindholm as a clear and obvious upgrade on current-day Kuzy (it ain't 2018 anymore folks) are simply delusional. It's my dream player-swap scenario given the current options.

Hard pass in the CGY trade. Caps need to keep their good picks unless it's for a young top 6 player with term.
Caps can get a lot more in the EDM trade.</div></div>
Yeah looking back at it the Calgary deal is light from the Caps side. I still like Lindholm so I'd go for it, but I get it.
On the Edmonton deal.... Nah, I think this is a stretch at best. The Caps get cost savings and a younger goalie putting up similar numbers now and historically, *and* the draft picks. I wouldn't touch this deal with a 10 foot pole if I'm Edmonton, but I don't have the brain damage required to be an Oilers GM.

Caps mid season changes
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>All_Knowing</b></div><div>I would be hesitant to trade Kuzy and go with this current center depth. While last game was a fine win, it was against a bottom team (who have looked terrible). Strome has looked fantastic and so has McM. But relying on Lapierre to be a consistent 3c is unrealistic at this point (especially after one strong game). Center depth is one of the most important aspects of cup contenders, and this center depth is not good enough, especially going against better teams.
Now if you added a trade for a true 3c (ex. Wennberg from Seattle, who just might be selling), I would be totally fine with trading Kuzy. But until then, going with this center depth is not good enough to be effective on a nightly basis.</div></div>
The other trades I really don't like at all, but I'd pull the Laine/Kuzy trigger in a heartbeat - would even add in one of our gaggle of 3rd pair LDs and a mid-to-late round pick as sweeteners. Totally agree on the skepticism of a young, largely unproven center corps, but 1) if there's a trade partner for Kuzy that makes sense, you've got to pull the trigger, 2) Protas can play center, and we have another guy or two in Hershey that can fill in, plus Dowd can handle 3C for a stint if needed, and 3) it doesn't preclude us still trading for another center (Lindholm, Wennberg, etc.), and if anything eases things since we'll have a better idea of what the future center depth might look like and the hard trade is already done.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Logicalicesports</b></div><div>Capitals say no, why the hell would we sell our future when our present team isn't in a bad position</div></div>
Because draft picks 1) aren't guaranteed to hit, and 2) typically take time to develop if they're not top-5 picks. Gives us a super-solid, young defensive core, an elite winger in his mid-20s, and a low-end 1C under 30 while getting us out from another year of Kuzy's contract and attitude. That's solid for the present and future, and lets us comfortably call up Leonard, Miro, and others over the next year or two.

What makes this work
Change Zadorov to Hanifin and I make that deal in a heartbeat as a Caps fan. I do think Lindholm's a 1C. I think a lot of people confuse "1C" and "Top-15 C". Lindholm-Strome or Strome-Lindholm is a great 1-2 punch, as both are arguably low-end 1Cs. Is it top 5 in the league? No. Top 15? Probably.
Problem is, Kuzy isn't going to waive to go to Calgary, so it's a moot point.
