Probably Too Out There

Description
Looking to me like the Caps might have another deadline similar to last year's. Sell some expiring/semi-expiring contracts, get a couple picks, take on an expiring salary, and get a young player that has upside but may just need a change of scenery. Looking for some different kind of moves/ideas in the actual execution, though.

Canadiens get a Monahan replacement/another option at center, and I don't think they'd be on Kuzy's list. Caps get a Dowd replacement and move on from a guy who doesn't want to be there anymore. I don't think it's a pure cap dump - Monahan looked washed when he went to Montreal and turned it around in a year. Some risk for Montreal, but minimal and with a small gain in draft capital.

Colorado's 1st will be very late in the draft, with a decent possibility of being the 32nd pick, and Dowd would be a perfect fit for their fourth line in a Cup push.

Kings are in the hunt, and need a little more scoring oomph, which Mantha has rediscovered this year. Thinking a Monahan-lite deal, but instead of picks it's a prospect that seems to be on his way out of town.

I think a 1st is a little rich for Dowd but what about a 2nd and NHL ready prospect?

Don't think the Kings have any interest in Mantha. They're definitely not trading Kaliyev for a rental.

Kings aren't trading Arthur Kaliyev for a rental whose contract is under water and whose cap hit (even with the retention) would require another move to absorb. We're getting our own self-rental back when Viktor Arvidsson comes off the LTIR list, anyway.

Why not the player swap (we'll agree to disagree on interest/need for Mantha)? If you figure that each, right now, probably has a 2nd round pick coming back in terms of value, then the value is there.

The Viktor-coming-back part makes sense. Don't know why I had it in my head he was out for the season.

Avs don't have a 2nd. A 1st round pick that is likely to come at the bottom five of that round is very nearly a 2nd. If it's the bottom two, then it would have been a 2nd a few years ago. The 4th being thrown in is to shore up some of the value from it being a late 1st rather than a high 2nd.

COL just doesn’t trade 1st rd picks it just goes against everything to pay a 1st for a guy that you are intending to play 4C.

IMO....TVR doesn't really move the needle here in Toronto other than adding depth....unless they think he can take top line minutes beside Rielly...I would hope we'd only pick him up for 3rd-5th round picks

I'd point out that Montreal first got Monahan by being paid a 1st.

They don't really want a Monahan replacement, they're looking at the draft more than anything else. And moving Evans doesn't change the C depth at all, you just go from a guy who's ok playing defensive minutes to... Kuznetsov. And for that they move an early 3rd for what will likely be a late 2nd in the future. They'd be better of just getting a pick for taking on a different overpaid C.
