I love Garland as a player and think this makes us a lot better, but I wonder if the term on Garland's deal makes us shy away. I get the sense that the cap going up + Mantha's expiring deal means the Caps could look to use that money to make a splashy FA signing (Nylander?)

This is the one reason I think the caps should just ride out Mantha’s contract. There are some really interesting names out there on the trade front, but the cap space this off-season could be huge if they just hold him and let him walk in July.

Totally agree. There's much more to gain by having all that cap space this summer as opposed to locking yourself into another $5M middle six winger contract

Yeah, I think this makes sense for both teams and the involved players, but I, too, give the edge to the Caps just riding out Mantha's contract this year. Best case, you're giving up assets to resolve a temporary problem that goes away in June.
