This would really come down to which one would you rather have, Nylander or Tkachuk. I personally think Nylander is going to sign for upwards of 7.5M, while Tkachuk in Calgary, you could probably get for under 6.5M, under the soft limit of Giordano and Gaudreau. Statistically, they are very similar in traditional numbers. From HockeyReference.com, their 82 game averages over their careers are very similar:

Nylander (22 years old - 146d) - 82 Game Average stats: 21G, 39A, 60P, 191 SOG, 23 Hits, 63 Takeaways, 42 Giveaways, 60.9% Offensive Zone starts, 57.4% Corsi For
Tkachuk (20 years old - 287d) - 82 Game Average stats: 21G, 34A, 55P, 188 SOG, 83 Hits, 41 Takeaways, 35 Giveaways, 49.7% Offensive Zone starts, 61.5% Corsi For

So statistically, theyre pretty similar offensively, but Tkachuk is almost two full years younger. Also Tkachuk is the more rounded player, being used equally in the offensive and defensive zone, while Nylander is primarily an offensive threat. Looking at the stats, and taking into account that Tkachuk has led the league in drawn penalties over the two years hes been in the league, would likely be at least $1M cheaper per year, and is 2 years younger, I would not trade Tkachuk for Nylander.

If anyone cares to take a peek:

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DJSums17</b></div><div>Okay Habs fan... Tkachuck and Nylander don't "cancel each other out". Tkachuck is a pest and sure can put up points, but Nylander will put up more, he's versatile, and creates for Matthews. Look at Matthews goals 90% of them are assisted by Nylander. I'm not saying Nylander makes Matthews, obviously, but damn... and Willy can play center so his value just keeps going up.

Hamilton for the other pieces, I'd do without Rasanen and put in Leivo since Calgary is apparently looking for RHF and Leivo is a good player just in Babs doghouse... Kapanen is definitely a top 6 (top line if you're REALLY desperate) he's fast, great hands and vision, high hockey iq and he can play both special teams. Preferably, I'd rather not but whatever... Kapanen has proven himself so it's 2 for 2 proven pieces plus Toronto gives another "prospect" and a 1st in a deep draft.</div></div>

Id argue that Tkachuk is more versatile than Nylander. Tkachuk is a guy who can score goals, make passes, get under the other team's skin, and be a FORCE defensively. I really think Tkachuk is just scratching the surface of what he could be. He doesn't have Nylander's flash, but he does a lot for his team. I wouldn't do Tkachuk one for one for Nylander from Calgary's side. Add in Hamilton, and its a big hell no. Hamilton is what every single team is looking for in a defenseman. Big, fast, right handed shot, can score goals, make passes and is improving defensively, If Adam Larsson got New Jersey Taylor Hall, Douggie Hamilton could fetch even more. Toronto fans have to wake up on this one. Not going to happen.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xspyrit</b></div><div>I am not arguing Hamilton's value but how is Brassard + Ceci + 2nd weak?

Brassard was a proven 60 pts player on the Rangers and a playoffs monster. He had a down year last season adapting to Boucher's system but he is on pace for 24 goals and 56 points this year. The team acquiring him can probably re-sign him to a friendly deal for a few more years (like 4 years x 5.5)

Ceci is not necessarily used in his best interest but this guy is good despite what his detractors say. Problem for him is that no one is better defensively on the Sens. He would look much better if he was playing behind 2 better D-men (defensively). Normally Karlsson would be one but he has been bad defensively this season. Ceci is asked to defend against the best skaters night after night and that's not what he should be doing. Give him a bit easier assignments and watch him flourish and even add offense to his game.

a 2nd round pick is never weak, gives you a good/decent prospect if you can draft.</div></div>

For a top pairing defenseman who is a 24 year old right shot, a possession monster, and already in the mix to be a top 10 defenseman in the league. This deal would be very weak. Flames traded a 1st and 2 2nd's to get him and that was a major steal. Brassard is a #2 C, would probably be a #3 behind Monahan and Backlund, but with Bennett rounding into form and Jankowski contributing, adding another C doesn't make sense. If it was Brassard, Ceci and a 2nd rounder for just Hamilton, that still wouldn't be close to enough. Ceci would be below Giordano and Brodie on Calgary, and possibly below Hamonic as well. The 2nd rounder doesn't mean a lot in this case, only 50% of 2nd rounders ever play a game in the NHL.

Take out Bennett and Calgary still says no. Trade the 2nd for a 1st and Calgary still says no. Start with Mark Stone and Calgary might take a look at it. Even then I think it would take more than just mark Stone to get Hamilton. Defensemen are valued higher than wingers. If Taylor Hall only gets you Adam Larsson, Hamilton should net you a heck of a lot more.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>henryp</b></div><div>not commenting on the trade but i think if calgary wants to win they got to go all in NOW. Giordano and Smith aren't getting any younger and they have traded away so many high end draft picks so its pretty much do or die.</div></div>

I don't think Calgary has to do much at all, as they've set themselves up extremely well for now and for the foreseeable future. They've got arguably one of the top-3 2-pairing defensive groups in the NHL and maybe the deepest blueline, signed for the next three years, all of whom, with the exception of Giordano are between 24 and 27. They have 4 very promising defensive prospects that they can allow to fully mature in Valimaki, Fox, Andersson and Kylington. They have some very good young forwards with a mix of good veteran players. The core going forward of Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett and Tkachuk has an average age of 21.5, and the veterans they have in Backlund and Frolik are still under 30. They have a number of young forwards that could make the jump in the next couple of years in Poirier, Klimchuk, Shinkaruk, Mangiapane, Dube, Phillips, Jankowski, among others. Finally their biggest current weakness, may be one of their system's biggest strengths, with 2 promising goaltending prospects on the cusp in Gillies and Rittich, and another who may be better than both of them in Parsons. Yes Treliving has mortgaged the next two drafts to get here, but with their organizational depth at D and in net, and their young forward core, they can certainly afford it. As for the Pastrnak trade, I think it's a good deal, which means Boston fans will think it's not enough, so probably not gonna happen.
