Matthews is probably going to get closer to 12M, Marner is probably going to get closer to 9M. so you're still well over the salary cap. Leafs can't afford karlsson, or probably anyone else. Have fun in cap hell.

Nylander to CGY
This would really come down to which one would you rather have, Nylander or Tkachuk. I personally think Nylander is going to sign for upwards of 7.5M, while Tkachuk in Calgary, you could probably get for under 6.5M, under the soft limit of Giordano and Gaudreau. Statistically, they are very similar in traditional numbers. From HockeyReference.com, their 82 game averages over their careers are very similar:
Nylander (22 years old - 146d) - 82 Game Average stats: 21G, 39A, 60P, 191 SOG, 23 Hits, 63 Takeaways, 42 Giveaways, 60.9% Offensive Zone starts, 57.4% Corsi For
Tkachuk (20 years old - 287d) - 82 Game Average stats: 21G, 34A, 55P, 188 SOG, 83 Hits, 41 Takeaways, 35 Giveaways, 49.7% Offensive Zone starts, 61.5% Corsi For
So statistically, theyre pretty similar offensively, but Tkachuk is almost two full years younger. Also Tkachuk is the more rounded player, being used equally in the offensive and defensive zone, while Nylander is primarily an offensive threat. Looking at the stats, and taking into account that Tkachuk has led the league in drawn penalties over the two years hes been in the league, would likely be at least $1M cheaper per year, and is 2 years younger, I would not trade Tkachuk for Nylander.
If anyone cares to take a peek:

It's an equivalent trade... do you do it??</div></div>
Value might be there but I'd prefer Brodie to Alzner, since Brodie has more offensive upside. Froese wouldn't crack the flames lineup, and at 27 might already be all he can be. Don't know much about McNiven but he probably wouldn't have a lot of value to Calgary since they have Tyler Parsons and Jon Gillies in the system already. Doesn't make a lot of sense to trade Brodie for another defenseman. If Calgary were to trade Brodie (or Hamonic for that matter), it would likely be to either get another scoring forward, or for a high(ish) draft pick to open up a spot for a guy like Valimaki.
A guy I could see being of interest to Montreal would be Dillon Dube, two-way guy, offensive upside, leadership, plays C. But I don't see Calgary wanting to part with him either.

Well that was a thoughtless, non-constructive, poorly spelt comment that was a waste of typing. Why would a 2nd rounder plus more only be worth a 4th rounder?
You could also word it as: a solid, top-9, affordable, two-way forward with a cup ring; a decent, ripened goalie prospect with some NHL experience, a high-skilled college standout with offensive upside; a second and fifth for a 30 year old former 30 goal scorer who a team is desperate to get rid of because they know he doesn't want to be there.

In all fairness to Dorion, what has he done to prove otherwise? He lost Methot to Vegas, ended up trading Phaneuf anyways, traded Hoffman for almost nothing, mortgaged the future for a lateral move from Turris to Duchene, traded for and signed Burrows and he's one bad Karlsson deal away from getting canned.

Trade with CAL - MTL in October
Calgary's already pretty set at forward, especially after signing James Neal. If you switched Bennett for Valimaki that might make more sense given where Calgary's at. They already traded one (Adam Fox) of their 4 defensive prospects (Rasmus Andersson, Oliver Kylington, Juuso Valimaki) so I don't think they'll be trading another one.

Politics is politics, and hockey is hockey. Flames aren't going anywhere and an arena deal will get done. Calgary has the young core to be good for a while, and a signing like Tavares would push them over the top. don't forget he played with Hamonic for a long time, who could really sell the city to him. Wouldn't be surprised even if Treliving was thinking about that when he made the deal for him.

That trade, at the time, was thought to maybe be the new market value for defencemen...but that never happened. You don't have to look past your own Hamonic trade to get a better idea of trade value for young Dmen...a first and 2 seconds...which is pretty much on par with 1 first, kapanen (former first round pick) and rasanen (2nd round pick)</div></div>
But, Hamilton is far and away better than Hamonic, has been for a few years, is younger and signed longer term. I agree Edmonton got fleeced and admittedly loved seeing it. But if Calgary trades Hamilton, they can't do it for something along the lines of a Hamonic deal. There would have to be a star coming the other way.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DJSums17</b></div><div>Okay Habs fan... Tkachuck and Nylander don't "cancel each other out". Tkachuck is a pest and sure can put up points, but Nylander will put up more, he's versatile, and creates for Matthews. Look at Matthews goals 90% of them are assisted by Nylander. I'm not saying Nylander makes Matthews, obviously, but damn... and Willy can play center so his value just keeps going up.
Hamilton for the other pieces, I'd do without Rasanen and put in Leivo since Calgary is apparently looking for RHF and Leivo is a good player just in Babs doghouse... Kapanen is definitely a top 6 (top line if you're REALLY desperate) he's fast, great hands and vision, high hockey iq and he can play both special teams. Preferably, I'd rather not but whatever... Kapanen has proven himself so it's 2 for 2 proven pieces plus Toronto gives another "prospect" and a 1st in a deep draft.</div></div>
Id argue that Tkachuk is more versatile than Nylander. Tkachuk is a guy who can score goals, make passes, get under the other team's skin, and be a FORCE defensively. I really think Tkachuk is just scratching the surface of what he could be. He doesn't have Nylander's flash, but he does a lot for his team. I wouldn't do Tkachuk one for one for Nylander from Calgary's side. Add in Hamilton, and its a big hell no. Hamilton is what every single team is looking for in a defenseman. Big, fast, right handed shot, can score goals, make passes and is improving defensively, If Adam Larsson got New Jersey Taylor Hall, Douggie Hamilton could fetch even more. Toronto fans have to wake up on this one. Not going to happen.

Big no on the Toronto trade for me. If there’s one thing Calgary doesn’t need its more D prospects. I’d rather see the, trade a D prospect to get some forward help. Hamilton is a cornerstone piece and I don’t think Calgary is going to move him. I could see Brodie getting moved for a 1st rounder, maybe packaged with Bennett or one of the D prospects for a high pick.

Signing the kids
If Matthews is getting 12M, I think 6.25M would be pretty conservative for Nylander. If Toronto's smart they'll take car of Nylander's deal first before they sign Matthews to an extension. I think Edmonton made a big mistake signing McDavid before Drasaitl because it really drove up Drasaitl's asking price. They could have potentially saved 1M per year if they had signed him first. The way contracts are going these days, Nylander could probably get 7-7.5M if he signs before Matthews, maybe up to 8M after. I don't think there's any way Nylander signs for less than 7 years.

I assumed that they meant Freddie Hamilton. That trade would be more fair than trading Douggie AND Kylington for this bunch. As has been said, it would start with Nylander or Mariner for Hamilton, even then Toronto would have to add more. Hamilton is a young, huge, elite defence an who is a 50 point guy on the backend while being a possession Beast. Toronto better not hold their breath because a Douggie trade is not happening.</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xspyrit</b></div><div>I am not arguing Hamilton's value but how is Brassard + Ceci + 2nd weak?
Brassard was a proven 60 pts player on the Rangers and a playoffs monster. He had a down year last season adapting to Boucher's system but he is on pace for 24 goals and 56 points this year. The team acquiring him can probably re-sign him to a friendly deal for a few more years (like 4 years x 5.5)
Ceci is not necessarily used in his best interest but this guy is good despite what his detractors say. Problem for him is that no one is better defensively on the Sens. He would look much better if he was playing behind 2 better D-men (defensively). Normally Karlsson would be one but he has been bad defensively this season. Ceci is asked to defend against the best skaters night after night and that's not what he should be doing. Give him a bit easier assignments and watch him flourish and even add offense to his game.
a 2nd round pick is never weak, gives you a good/decent prospect if you can draft.</div></div>
For a top pairing defenseman who is a 24 year old right shot, a possession monster, and already in the mix to be a top 10 defenseman in the league. This deal would be very weak. Flames traded a 1st and 2 2nd's to get him and that was a major steal. Brassard is a #2 C, would probably be a #3 behind Monahan and Backlund, but with Bennett rounding into form and Jankowski contributing, adding another C doesn't make sense. If it was Brassard, Ceci and a 2nd rounder for just Hamilton, that still wouldn't be close to enough. Ceci would be below Giordano and Brodie on Calgary, and possibly below Hamonic as well. The 2nd rounder doesn't mean a lot in this case, only 50% of 2nd rounders ever play a game in the NHL.
Take out Bennett and Calgary still says no. Trade the 2nd for a 1st and Calgary still says no. Start with Mark Stone and Calgary might take a look at it. Even then I think it would take more than just mark Stone to get Hamilton. Defensemen are valued higher than wingers. If Taylor Hall only gets you Adam Larsson, Hamilton should net you a heck of a lot more.

Calgary should avoid Patches and wait and sign JVR in the offseason if they want a goal-scoring winger. If they could get rid of Brouwer and or Stone's contract(s) they could even fit in a run for Tavares. Their money and assets can be better spent than trading for a big name player.

EDM - MTL shake up
MTL is already going to start regretting the massive Price deal, and I think EDM would be in big trouble if they made this deal. They'd have McDavid and Price (who looks to be regressing a bit) making a combined $23M, and would have over 62M tied up in the cap next year in 12 players. Pacioretty would only be around for one full season, as there's no way they'd be able to resign him next offseason. It's interesting but not a great deal for EDM. If I'm Montreal though, I make that trade.

In reality, its a pretty good deal, but I don't think the Flames are going to give up on Sam Bennett yet. I'm thinking they'll see where he is at the end of his bridge deal, which is still at a good cap number. At worst right now, Bennett is a half-decent 3rd liner that can bring physicality and keep up with offensive-minded players. at best though, he's a 1-2 line two-way C. He was thought to be the number one ranked player in his draft so he still has that ceiling if he can put it all together.

Considering Sakic already turned down NYI when they offered Hamonic, a 1st and a top propect for Duchene, and wanted much more, I don't think this deal is enough. I don't think Calgary has to do much at all, as they've set themselves up extremely well for now and for the foreseeable future. They've got arguably one of the top-3 2-pairing defensive groups in the NHL and maybe the deepest blueline, signed for the next three years, all of whom, with the exception of Giordano are between 24 and 27. They have 4 very promising defensive prospects that they can allow to fully mature in Valimaki, Fox, Andersson and Kylington. They have some very good young forwards with a mix of good veteran players. The core going forward of Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett and Tkachuk has an average age of 21.5, and the veterans they have in Backlund and Frolik are still under 30. They have a number of young forwards that could make the jump in the next couple of years in Poirier, Klimchuk, Shinkaruk, Mangiapane, Dube, Phillips, Jankowski, among others. Finally their biggest current weakness, may be one of their system's biggest strengths, with 2 promising goaltending prospects on the cusp in Gillies and Rittich, and another who may be better than both of them in Parsons. Yes Treliving has mortgaged the next two drafts to get here, but with their organizational depth at D and in net, and their young forward core, they can certainly afford it. As for the Pastrnak trade, I think it's a good deal, which means Boston fans will think it's not enough, so probably not gonna happen.
