How much is Rantanen worth
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CBJ4CUP</b></div><div>the guys 22... whose over point per game last year and in the playoffs. in what world would he sign for 500k less than aho on a 3years longer term...? Espcially when the rfas around him are gonna get more than that too...'
and the guy is practicing in norway rn, clearly they arnt close
and he was on pace for 96 points.. and we just saw panarin get 11.5 as a ufa</div></div>
1. Aho was an offersheet and a C, offersheets usually go much more over market value
2. The guy lives in Finland, Norway isnt that far away, doesnt mean his agent isnt in talks with sakic in denver. Means he wants to be ready for camp, MacKinnon is practicing in Halifax right now, and he has a contract.
3. Panarin hit the open UFA market that means every team sends him an offer, people overpay every year in UF,A doesnt mean that a guy who can either play in Colorado for 4 more years or nowhere else in the nhl can demand that much. It's like buying a house with 30 offers in on it already.
4. Is rantanen a great player...yes, is he worth more than 8 mill a season... not in my eyes but neither is any RFA unless you're buying up significant UFA years

Chris Johnston says Nylander stays and Marner sets the Market
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CrazyK04</b></div><div>Would you rather the leafs trade Kapanen? What is a fair return for Kapanen? i have a list of ideas to make a big "What should the Leafs do" ACGM. Is Liljegren a bust?</div></div>
You are all over the place and need to push away the noise.
1) If you look at Nylander beyond last seasons meager point totals you see a player who is a possession monster, creates offense and an elite level 5v5, is a top tier playmaker and creates a lot of turnovers in the neutral and offensive zones. He definitely could be a little more engaged in his zone but he isn't Kessel levels bad, he's sometimes gives guys too much cushion in the defensive zone.
2) Kapanen is the most replaceable player on the entire team. He's a right winger with big value in the minds of many, but in reality is a depth guy with great speed who I think could be a 30 goal scorer in the right scenario. Will it happen in TO? Maybe but if someone wanted to buy high on him thinking increased icetime would unlock a monster player, I'd move him in a heart beat. He gets so much love from Leaf fans and non Leaf fans alike and that is confounding to me. He had a hot start playing with Matthews and completely disappeared in the second half and playoffs. If he isn't on a break away he's almost useless. Just skates up the wing with speed takes a shot and skates back to his zone. The kid needs to work on holding the puck in the offensive zone.
3) Liljegren isn't a bust at all. In fact I think he's a terrific prospect who could make the team this year. I think too many heard or ready stuff about him being in the mold of Karlsson and that wasn't fair. He's a terrific skater and great puck carrier but isn't the best passer. What he did last year was take the pedal off his offensive game and focused on his defensive zone play and he was terrific defensively in the 2nd half and the playoffs playing top pair minutes for the Marlies at 20. That is an accomplishment most don't seem to see. He is developing into the perfect partner for Rielly, someone who can skate their way out of trouble and is very good positionally. He won't be top pair minutes right away in the NHL but I see him being more like a smaller Brett Pesce than Karlsson. May chip in with 30 points a year from time to time but always be good defensively.
4) People just need settle down. People are way too worried and consumed with periphery stuff. Marner's contract, trade ideas, cap space, speculation most is just people trying to get clicks to make money. Its too much.
Moral of the story, Marner is going to sign in TO, the team will have an interesting training camp and the Leafs will be battling Tampa for the presidents trophy as long as they don't face major injuries.

My Gord Miller like solution with a twist

Not sure why you don't think Nylander won't rebound. There's more to suggest he had poor luck this season then his first 2 seasons being a fluke. Also I don't quite understand the sudden negativity on Liljegren. He's a 20 year old RHD playing the shutdown assignments in the AHL. Most people are just upset by his point totals stagnating but that might just be a result of not playing on the powerplay anymore. He's at worst Toronto's 2nd best prospect with lots of time left to develop

Should the leafs have signed Tavares
"SHOULD THE LEAFS HAVE SIGNED TAVARES". You must be kidding. It's like saying the Oilers would have been if they hadn't drafted McDavid and drafted a 5m player instead.
If you think Tavares is fair value as UFA at 11m. then you sign him. In a cap league what has the Tavares signing cost the Leafs this year, Marleau at 6.25m, a first rounder to get rid of Marleau and 2.1m Connor Brown. Sound like a bargain to me. Having players on bad contracts is bad business. Having too many good players on fair contracts is what a team wants, even it means trading a player or two to be cap compliant.

Push Kerfoot to LW (where he has played better) and put Patrick on 3C. Maybe he'd work on the wing with Hyman and Matthews?

I think that the return from Arizona would be whoever the leafs want. Since Arizona would have to fold the franchise. Does no one even bother to look at mathews salary structure?

Matthews is the problem
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canadian_Rednek</b></div><div>The Toronto Media and Marner's Agent/Dad are the issues, Signing Marner to a deal around his $9M value solves any of the "problems" the leafs have. Great points, you hit the nail on the head... The only thing I'd add is he could be the 6th best depending on how you value Andersen aswell.

So the OP is blaming it on the goal scoring franchise centre... you are blaming it on a different goal scoring franchise centre. Maybe the real problem is some unreasonable demands. Which is sort of how negotiations go. If having too many talented players is a problem then I hope the leafs stay knee deep in **** because I really like this team.
