I think the days of RFAs signing 8 year contracts is gone. It'll probably be in the neighborhood of 8-9M over 4-5 years.

On a semi-related note, is there a team with better contracts than Colorado?

I think he's waiting until Marner signs or at least one of the other RFA's and will take approx the same as they're getting with an adjustment for the tax rates and what not. I think Marner's contract really is the thing holding everyone back. Point kind of gets whatever he gets since he's a center and plays in TB, Tkachuk isn't quite in the same echelon as the other RFA's. Marner being the highest scorer of the 3 main wingers and to slight concern to Point, will dictate the contracts.

Marner isn't waiting for those other guys to sign. The other guys are very much watching what happens with Marner to know what they're worth.

I just dont see why he would sign a 8year term for less than a 1mil increase, where he could get paid on his next contract if he took a short term deal.

If he takes that 8 year deal he is stupid

Girard just signed for 7 years... I think that the rfa class is over estimating what they can get, I feel they mostly all have deals done but are waiting to see what happens in Toronto because marners demands have been so public. They also know that dubas caved with nylander and gave matthews that ridiculous contract so it's possible he screws up the leagues comparables yet again

I can see marner missing time while the other RFAs make deals in time for or during camp, big money means long term, it's silly to give these guys so much money for low term because then you have to give them a raise again in a few years, unless it's a subban or duchene bridge deal... these guys are restricted for a reason, I get trying to get the best deal possible but once you're closer to starting the season they will be telling their agents to get the deals done

Girard also isnt a top RFA that gets to choose his demands....

And they also are restricted free agents, so and extremely valuable to their teams.. as the season gets closer both sides are going to be wanting to get it done... The team doesnt have all the leverage or else these players would have been signed already

The teams dont have all the leverage you're right, but neither does the rfa.. sakic has already said mikko and him were on the same page, which leads me to believe that by camp of marner hasn't got extremely overpaid than they all sign for the deals they have worked out already. 24/7 on Twitter said that it sounds like an 8x8 deal, but rants can have a handshake deal with Joe stating that he takes that as long as marner doesnt go above a certain amount because as i said earlier that dubas has caved before

I just cant see them having a deal in place already... or else it would be signed already...

and no way he takes 8x8.

Why is that not likely... its 2 and 1/2 weeks away from camp, he should have something in mind.

And since when is 8 mill a year so low? Listen to the sportsnet analysts they think that looking at all their stats point is worth the most money and he is probably work 8.5/yr as a ufa

the guys 22... whose over point per game last year and in the playoffs. in what world would he sign for 500k less than aho on a 3years longer term...? Espcially when the rfas around him are gonna get more than that too...'

and the guy is practicing in norway rn, clearly they arnt close

and he was on pace for 96 points.. and we just saw panarin get 11.5 as a ufa

1. Aho was an offersheet and a C, offersheets usually go much more over market value

2. The guy lives in Finland, Norway isnt that far away, doesnt mean his agent isnt in talks with sakic in denver. Means he wants to be ready for camp, MacKinnon is practicing in Halifax right now, and he has a contract.

3. Panarin hit the open UFA market that means every team sends him an offer, people overpay every year in UF,A doesnt mean that a guy who can either play in Colorado for 4 more years or nowhere else in the nhl can demand that much. It's like buying a house with 30 offers in on it already.

4. Is rantanen a great player...yes, is he worth more than 8 mill a season... not in my eyes but neither is any RFA unless you're buying up significant UFA years

I going to state this again... Tarasenko had the highest paid contract ever for a winger coming off his ELC @ 7.5M, keeping in mind that Rantanen is better and cap % he should get in the vicinity of 9-9.5/8 in the exact same range as Marner, the team is giving up the years of cheaper controllable contract possibilities to steal a couple UFA years, but to get that kind of money, you need to give up those UFA years

We'll see how they turn out with the McAvoy and Carlo contracts, but yeah, they're another good one. Only downside for them is Backes.

Dubas is waiting though as he should at this point. And I highly doubt Point and Rantanen both wait for Marner. I think one of those two will sign relatively soon and then Ferris can shut it mouth.

Also 3 of their top 4 forwards are on the wrong side of 30 so its hard to say how long before age starts showing.
