2023 and 2024
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>At NCAA level, Fantilli hit levels that we didn’t see much of from Celebrini, where he would take over games. I probably watched 12-15 games for both of them. Celebrini was better on power play. I am no draft expert, but I know college hockey pretty well. Where they go in pros, time will tell.
I think over time we will have a good idea on the top guys. It’s my belief that the top group of guys from 2023 goes a good 30-35 guys deep whereas 2024 only appears about 12-15 guys before drop off. 2023 was really deep.
Among dmen, I think the two drafts are very comparable. But last years crop of forwards was particularly strong.</div></div>
Imo, 2023 has a better top 4 then 2024, but overall, the 2024 is better in the 5 to 16 range. The 2023 may be better for the end of the 1st round, but way less than may say.
If we wanna compare the 5 to 16 range, assuming 1 to 4 this year is Celebrini, Demidov, Lev, Lindstrom
Iginla > Reinbacher
Silayev = Simashev
Parekh < Michkov
Dickinson > Leonard
Buium > Danielson
Catton = Dvorsky
Yakemchuk < Willander
Sennecke = But
Helenius < Benson
Eiserman > Yager
MBN > Wood
Jiricek > Honzek
And the D class this year is much better, with Reinbacher and Simashev being 3 to 6 in this years class

2023 was much stronger draft. 2024 is one of the weaker and thinner pools.</div></div>
Yeah, strongly disagree.
1st off: Celebrini is most definitely in the tier with Fants and Leo.
Celebrini basically has the offense of Fantilli and the defense of Carlsson. The only thing is he is missing 2 inches, but that really doesn’t matter too much
2nd: Demidov is easily along Michkov, and imo, the talent gap is so tiny, that taking in the character and KHL contract length, I easily take Demidov
Dvorsky shouldn’t be near those names, definitely under guys like Lindstrom and Iginla
Its honestly weird people find this draft weak. Looking at each players individual, it is a hell of a draft, with the most top line ceilings I’ve since, even more than 2023
I understand some of the top line ceiling guys from this year don’t necessarily have the floor of the 2023 guys, but its not the case for everyone, a lot still have great floors and ceilings

All I'll say is, there is a reason we are on Cap Friendly and not in a suit managing an NHL team. In general, it is best to trust what managements do

Yeah, I completely understand that part. Makes sense. Obviously doesn't make sense to make the trade from MTLs side, cause they need that high-end talent, but it is understandable that SJ keeps a guy who is the key to a door on the team
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rob32sjsharks</b></div><div>I don’t think Slaff should’ve been the first overall, but he fits what you guys need! </div></div>
Really? Who would you take before him? Cause at this point, I don't think there is anyone close to Slaf right now in terms of current level of hockey, and he has one of, or the, best ceiling in his class

Agree to disagree then.
I will just say this: Why wouldn't be Cristall worth 5th OA, or Heidt.
Why is Parascak only going 20 to 30 this year? Why is Catton likely dropping out of the top 10?
They have the same production or better as Musty, yet they aren't top 10 talents, and some are barely even 1st round talents. I get Musty is 6'2, but that doesn't raise his range from 15 to 20 to 5. Again, Greentree is looking like a 13 to 19 OA prospect. If you value Musty around that range, then fair enough, but the top 10 got stuff that all the guys I listed don't have. They are all great to elite skaters, all have another, usually multiple assets that are truly elite.

That guy who scored 1.87 ppg vs NCAA as 17 year old
The reason he drops is definitely not because of his numbers.
Eiserman has flaws that won’t get him at the NHL level if he doesn’t greatly work on them. But that’s ok, he’s not the only one like that. The problem is, he hasn’t really given scouts and managements the idea that he “wants” to improve. I completely see a reasoning behind thinking that he will have bad attitude with coaches and development staffs, and if he does, he won’t improve enough to be the player he was drafted to be

And musty should have been top 15 last year and would be top 5 this year after the year he had! I feel if Musty was in this draft most teams would pick him over Levshunov.
I could be a homer but how often do you see an 18/19 year old 6’2” forward score near 2PPG in the OHL?</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Seiched</b></div><div>Glad I caused some debate.
Comment shows how little you know (or just a MTL homer). Musty post draft value is higher than 5OA in 24, there is literally no one past Celebrini or Demindov that is 'worth' more than Musty right now. Smith would be 2nd OA in 24. Also Montreal needs big wingers to complement your tiny team.
Not a homer, post draft value is a thing. Plenty of players from 23 draft, drafted higher than Musty, had their value's drop. Things happen, kids continue to mature and develop and some have value increase like Musty and others eh. I do agree, giving up Musty would be a big deal for SJS, the trade proposed here is simply for positional value. SJS needs D prospects. Especially RHD.
I am sure Caufield wants to draft Catton.</div></div>
Y’all not comparing apples to apples here. Of course Musty is gonna be scoring more this year, he’s in his D+1 year. All things considered, I take Catton over Musty, who I ranked 11th this year, a lot more offense to offer with Catton. That would also mean Lindstrom, Iginla, Sennecke, and of course Celebrini, would all be better picks then Musty.
As for Smith, its insulting to say that he is better than Demidov. Other than the fact that Smith is a center, there is nothing I that really makes Smith better than Demidov, who also doesn’t have as much of Michkov’s factors since he is only playing another year.
The debate would probably be between Lindstrom and Smith. More offense with Smith, more impact with Lindstrom, so its kind of a pick your poison type of situation.
Also, y’all hyping up last years depth too much. The depth this year from 4 to 16 is better than last year.
At the end of all of this, MTL absolutely declines this deal, not really a deal that would help us out of the rebuild

Smith for 5th OA is MUCH closer than Musty for 5th OA. Smith and 5th OA will be in the same tier of prospects, 5th OA and Musty is probably a 2 tier difference.
I get hyping up your prospects and stuff, but saying Musty is worth that much is a flaming hot take.
I wouldn’t even say Hutson is worth a top 5 pick, and he broke a bunch of decade old NCAA records

His value is at an all-time high, while we have a ton of LD prospects like Hutson Engstrom and already having Guhle Harris. I believe that the Habs are at one top 6 player after the draft from actually starting to become competitive and the Canes wont have enough money to lock up Necas.</div></div>
Yes, but we also want to become competitive. Remove Matheson sets us back. Until Hutson can prove he is going to be a consistent point producer, who won't get out-bodied all the time, and can eat 23 minutes a game, Matheson should stay. This may come as soon as December, but it might not. I have hopes that Matheson can be traded next off season, but I don't think it's a good idea to trade him now.
Also, if we were to do a trade with Matheson and Necas, adding a 1st, Xhekaj, and Evans is absolutely too much
