1 year rebuild retool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cs_7</b></div><div>yea like i just dont see how this team is 'better' next year. Unless Sandin and Bracco come in and are insane, so maybe you pull a st louis 2017. Still try for the playoffs but dont do it at the risk of the future.</div></div>
that seems to be the wisest approach to me. I think it'd be foolish to blow up the offense to try and shore up the defense right now. Give it time. The offense is young and talented - keep them. The defense is a patch work with good prospects coming. Be patient. Accept that next year could be a step back and then build the team through that process of drafting -> developing (marlies) -> growing team success.
If the we/the leafs can accept that process then I think we're in good shape. Getting all emotional and making panic moves will likely hurt more in the long run

Schmaltz for Nylander
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cs_7</b></div><div>Why is Ruuta not good? From everything I have seen from him he is the exact d man toronto needs Big, Dman, right handed, could possibly play 1st pairing with Rielly if needed. From every hawks game I have watched he has looked great.
Also Murphy has played 0 games this year and im not sure why. Injured or healthy scratch?</div></div>
Murphy is injured and coming back the 1st week of December. Murphy is a better player hands down. Rutta is a 3rd pairing and not bad per se for a 3rd pairing but Murphy is a solid 2nd and can slot to the 1st. Both are right handed guys. Either one works in the end.

Opening Night
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Five years is a term the Leafs don't want. It leads right into UFA. So more years, or a 1-4 bridge. I'm not a fan of Carrick, but the Leafs shouldn't be giving him away as he might be needed this year. Holl is more likely candidate 8th Dman as he would likely clearly waivers</div></div>
If Carrick ever got to play regular minutes he'd do exactly what he did last night. He won't be the star of the game ever but he'll never be a problem. He has a very good stick and is a bull dog. I'd play him over Hainsey on the right side to be honest. Hainsey is good in front of the net and is a great PK guy but he's not the fastest anymore and he's on his weak side and that does make it hard for him to press the play up the right hand side of the ice. I think Hainsey would be far better on the 3rd pairing left side.
I was also impressed with Holl, he's another guy that is just solid. Won't blow you away with any part of his game but he's just smart all around (At least that's how he looked in the small sample size I've seen him in.)
Ozhiganov is also looking pretty good. I really don't think TO needs to make any moves on the back end, they need to just play better team defence.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I really think the pairing of Gardiner and Reilly is so unfounded. It's this illusion of creating of "a # 1pairing". The offence of Gardiner and Reilly needed to split up into two pairs. Gardiner is not trusted to be PK, I gotta think he needs an solid Dman beside on regular shifts....either Zaitsev or Ozzie.
Hainsey did very well with Reilly last year and since the Leafs seem to have to enough NHL good LHD, I imagine Hainsey has to play on the right side. Let's hope Babcock doesn't overwork him like last year's rented mule.</div></div>
It would be an experiment for sure, I’m not a hater of Gardiner and I think he was pretty good defensively last season. My issue is trying to get hainsey som rest this year and get Borgman into the lineup a bit. Now Injuries may play a part in doing that granted. If there were a way to get Hainsey back to the left side this would work out well for when he is rested. Yes Holl and carrick can both fill in on the right but I don’t see them as being part of the future. I think that Borgman or Rosen will be needed for the next few years till we se if sandin is ready.

I was a fan of Borgman last year. If he deserves to be in top 6, maybe so switching to the right side by some one is necessary. You and me are kinda optimistic about the Leafs next year even wiihout Gardiner and Hainsey. Borgman, Rosen, Liljegren...maybe Sandin could be ready.

I’m not opposed to dermott switching over either and pairing up with gardiner so long as he keeps progressing how he has. I didn’t get to watch the second game against Ottawa just the condensed version. Apparently Rosen did well too. Borgman in that first game was fantastic. I would rather see hainsey’s down time going to the left side so we can have that sorted out, I’m sure liljegren will get some starts on the right but I would really like to be patient with him and just make sure he is ready to go next year. Next season:
Reilly/Zaitsev
Dermott/liljegren
Borgman/Ozhiganov
I feel really good about this. We have been drafting well in the later parts of the 1st 2nd and even third rounds. If we can keep developing the future looks bright, even with our offence. As these kids move up we can keep the cupboards full of prospects and picks by moving out other players that aren’t part of our core. It’s beneficial to farm players rather than chase them in FA or trades.
I think with our offence generated by the blue line and some good team defence coming back from the forwards it makes for a very potent two way system.

A trade that makes too much sense.
I think Lou would have to say NO to this deal as it just does not make sense to trade Kadri who is one of the top shut down centres in the League and has the ability to bag 30 goals a year and is just entering his prime years. He is the type of player you need to win in the NHL and especially in the playoffs and is on a very reasonable contract.
You should note the job he does on McDavid everytime the Leafs play the Oilers and realize his true value to a team. i actually think Marner and not Nylander is going to be the centre to replace Bozak as he can drive a line by himself. Babcock is slow cooking Marner but with his elite skating, passing and vision skills he is a natural centre once he gets stonger and learns how to play defence and a 200 foot game.
