16 Million Dollar Man

Created by: Cs_7
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 22, 2018
Published: Oct. 22, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ken Campbell stated on the recent episode of "The Hockey News" Podcast (at around 21:45 in)

That if Matthews wants too he could become the first "16 Million Dollar Man"

He states that if Matthews wants too he can demand 16 million dollars knowing that he would be offer sheeted such if the leafs don't sign him.

Ken goes in to more detail on this so check out what he had to say if you're so inclined.

While I do not really believe this will happen, It is interesting to think about.

Who would offer sheet him?
Would the Leafs match it?
If they do how would they work it?

There is a lot of questions with this, this is just one way of dealing with it.

(EDIT: After finishing this it is not as bad as I origannly thought it would be

    Correction, Ken Campbell is high

I am just going off what he said and trying to see if a team can ice a contender while having a player at 16 percent of the cap,

I listened to that too. There's no way anyone signs him to a contract worth more than McDavid even with cap increase. Arizona certainly wouldn't do this as they would have to give up 4 first round draft picks. I don't think any team would do this honestly

Yea I don't think it happens either, I just wanted to see what it would look like if it did.

If Matthews last two games are any indication he is 1.6m player. Matthews certainly isn't a 16m player, but the only way he gets anywhere near that money is if he gets an offer sheet.
Ken Campbell said 16m? Seems like hockey scribes...just like have make to one more "story" to get some recognition.
What is all this love for Pysck?

In all fairness this was their "extreme hot take" segment and not discussed as something that would likely happen.

Arizona will move to Houston in the 5 yrs. Matthews and his agent wouldn't sign that deal to begin with. Matthews could be the Vince Carter of Toronto. Vince Carter could have had Toronto in his hand. Greedy players! More money in TO and in the international markets with TO. Matthews would be a fool to sign anywhere other then NYR. They suck! They are not giving four first's in an offer sheet.

You mean he isn't going to shoot at a 40% shooting percentage all season?

Easy... they can’t all be gems lol. I’m sure he will even out and get on a ppg pace. 16m is very doubtful I would think dubas gets him locked down before a sheet can come in errr.... at least I hope anyway.

If Mathews is going to get smothered it should open the door for other players on our team it just has planned out the last couple of games. I don’t think we are the type of team that is going to win or lose based on what Matthews produces.

on 31 thoughts podcast, they said the same thing. to be fair, tehy did discuss weed a majority of the time, but the leafs are prepared for the nuclear option, that if some team offer sheets matthews, and leafs match, how there roster would look and who to trade

Ken Campebll is such a joke, I dont think the hockeynews has produced anything of substance before they were bought up by Quebecor in 2014 before recently selling it off again.
Its now just media company trading cards ran by a joke of a Editor in Chief

whether he makes more than Tavares or not is a better question. No way he makes anywhere close to 16, another team isn't gonna offersheet him and have to pay him a ton PLUS have to give up picks

Yeah this gossip is making something out of nothing.

If there was a team paying him $16, then he would look terrible and it wouldn't be fun losing all the time.

For similar money to whatever Toronto offers, I also don't think there's another city and team that Matthews would want to commit at least 8 years to.

Out of interest I did check the capfriendly offer-sheet tool, and for everything beyond $8x5 the compensation is 4x1sts. Every team but San Jose can offer that
It will never come to that, Matthews will be signed soon because the Leafs hired Laurence Gilman as AGM just to make sure Matthews is signed on time.

Teams do not offer sheet players, it drives the cost of salaries up artificially. Not to mention, signing a player to 20% of a teams’ cap means you have journeymen, rookies and players past their prime playing for you because you can’t fill a roster with true talent

16 you let Matthews walk. Four first round picks then you offer sheet whatever team he went to. Not for 16 million but to raise their cap so high they couldn't match. Six million for a second line winger, Six million for a third line winger then stick them on the Marlies.

The Matthews thing is bull. But I'd take 4 1st rounders for Matthews either way.

As for Pysyk, he's very good defensively and good advanced numbers. Kinda like Tanev. Could be exactly what the Leafs are after. He's better then God damn Hainsey that's for sure...

16mil seems like a bit overkill. But honestly, it's still pretty believable that ARI will offer sheet Matthews the second July 1st hits if he remains unsigned. let's just say it's a 7 year deal at $14.5mil AAV, would TOR match?

Don't know if Leafs would match. In the future 15m or so might even hurt Arizona's ability to sign future players. I thought OEL was overpayment at 8.5m especially when his contract takes him to age 36.

I honestly don't see them matching. But I also want to point out that really?? The poorest team in the league is going to offer sheet a player on the richest? That just sounds like a disaster to me. Especially considering the amount of young talent in Arizona right now (ie Keller, Strome, Chychrin etc).
