This is what it will take leaf fans are you prepared
First off, their are better rentals than Smith, and Calgary isn't trading their "starter" while contending.
Second, there is no way we get Petry and Simmonds for that, if we could they would already be on our team.
Third, their are options that wont cost us good roster players, we are contending, we dont need to give up roster players. Lovejoy is an option that keeps being floated and I bet you a 4th and Holl could get that done.

How is Brown cheaper when we have to resign him. I would rather take the cap certainty. Plus Kadri brings so much to our team. Responsibility, grit, leadership, he is all time, die hard, he bleeds blue. Dude is a f*cking hero! Plus dude just had back to back 30 goal seasons and he is making under 5mill a year, look at Bozie (love him) this year, and tell me why we should move the best 3rd line center in the league. (yeah I said it)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LGBstl</b></div><div>Idk still doesnt seem worth it.
Pietro can land you something along the lines of a 1st, high end prospect and young NHLer
Tarasenko/Parayko can land you all that above plus another good piece.</div></div>
That is fair, it was more so building off a trade a saw earlier. I think you need to add more. I think this is what the Blues would actually need for them to even listen.
Two first, probably Toronto and Carolina. Bracco from Toronto, Saarela from Hurricanes and then maybe Bean. so the Blues would be getting:
+ Pesce
+ Wallmark
+ Necas
+ Faulk
+ Bean
+ Bracco
+Saarela
+ 1st (tor)
+ 1st (car)
+ 3rd (tor)
- Petro
- Parayko
- Tarasenko
And then I think Toronto would probably have to float something to Carolina, maybe a 2020 3rd?

You are replacing their top 2 RHD with lesser playes Pesce < Parayko, Faulk << Pietro
And then getting a 1st Necas and Wallmark.. which is barely enough to make up for downgrading the D AND you want to add in Tarasenko as well.</div></div>
I was thinking that too, what if Brown went to St Louis instead? Maybe a 3rd instead of a 4th?

I wonder if we could get a three way trade going here, first I think you would have to add in another player, probably Faulk to make that trade work. Since you are giving away that much, make Toronto move the draft picks and Brown. Blues get the picks, Carolina gets Brown and Toronto gets Petro.
Blues:
+ Pesce
+ Wallmark
+ Necas
+ Faulk
+ 1st
+ 4th
- Petro
- Parayko
- Tarasenko
Carolina:
+ Parayko
+ Tarasenko
+ Brown
- Pesce
- Wallmark
- Necas
- Faulk
Toronto:
+ Petro
- 1st
- 4th
- Brown

I think you both have a chance of being right with your opposing comments above. It’s simply differing opinions based on how you each value Pietrangelo and the Leafs’ D prospects.
Personally, I’m skeptical on Liljegren. Mono is not the sole reason he dropped that far in the draft. Other teams must have seen something in his game that gave them cause for concern. Is it possible that Liljegren or Sandin might one day play at the level of Pietrangelo? Sure. I just don’t think it’s probable which is why I would pull the trigger on a deal like this.
That being said, I think it’s a much safer play for Dubas to make low risk additions (pending UFAs) at the deadline and give his D prospects time to develop and hopefully contribute at some point while on entry level contracts.
This website wouldn’t be any fun tho if we all just rolled with the ‘safe’ approach</div></div>
I personally dont think Sandin or Lili will be Petro level as individuals. I think them growing as a pair is where you will see that value. Just my take, you know?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MapleLeafs97</b></div><div>Typical leafs fan that thinks Liljegren is looking amazing. Sandin is already out preforming him with lesser deployment and being an entire year behind. Neither of these two will ever be on Pietrangelo level. With that being said, if this deal included Sandin I wouldn't touch it. Just like if it included Parayko. His cap hit and term is appealing but is very well suited for someone with such limited offensive upside (the big slapshot is nice). Petro is under contract through next year as well which just so happens to line up perfectly with Marleau coming off the books. Petro will then want to get paid, and so he shall as one of the league's premier defensemen. If you get a chance to trade a 30th overall pick, a defenseman that may never succeed in the big leagues and a forward that can produce at a 20 goal pace playing alongside a top 5 center in the league, for Petro you take it.</div></div>
That comment gets so old. I hate the typical leaf fan comment. I forgot points mean everything, thanks for that great insight!

Exactly, the value is technically correct. I just dont think its smart long term. If Torontos young defense can take a step forward you will have Sandin, Lili and Dermott on cheap contracts. That is value, and it takes one of them to over achieve and all of a sudden, Torontos D goes from the reception it has now, to a solid group.

The idea of Gardiner for another 8 years makes me sick. The steps he has lost already, I cant see the value making sense. As for Petro, this is sacrificing out future for a win now. Those rarely work, I dont like it and I dont think its smart. Washington Forsberg deal comes to mind.

The value is right here, but I personally dont think this is worth it. Banking on two expiring contracts for a one year push doesn't plan for the future. Plus, never trade a young defenseman that shows the promise that Lili does. He has been looking amazing. Sandin and Lili look like they are going to grown together into a power house. There value goes way above and beyond that of Petro in the long term. Parayko, I would be forced to reconsider, but Petro is a big no from me.

You guys really need to stop with this crap. What team in their right mind trades a budding young talent for an aging one!? Why would we give up 6 years of cost control on Sandin for 3 years of a defender that is NOTHING like he used to be.
There is a place for him on our a team, and a way to make it work. But it is not by trading our second best D prospect.

Toronto brings back a star caliber player (immediately not season ready) and they go 1-2-2. You want to interject 8! New! Players! to a line up and hope they all work!? These are off season moves man, not regular season moves. Think about Thomas from Montreal last year, he didnt hit his stride at all. Even Boyle the year before. This is really risky. I dont like it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>Even then, I don't see why they do it? Johnsson had a good season last year in the AHL, got a bunch of press for it, and suddenly became a decent enough prospect, but it would still mean subtracting from a very solid D-core to maybe potentially add a bit up from?
Honestly, if a team is going to fill that need for you, it's going to require more than you're willing to pay. Want to know why the Ducks have such a solid d-core? Because none of Fowler, Lindholm, Montour, Manson or Larsson were rushed or traded in some overpay scenario to do a short-ish term upgrade. Wait and let Liljegren/Sandin develop. Then you've got those two, Reilly, Dermott and Zaitsev. Not amazing, but still very, very solid.</div></div>
This is actually the opinion I share myself. I believe we should wait and develop as well. A lot of these trades I would only do because they make sense for the Leafs, very rarely do they make sense for the other team, which then creates this tension. I think the ducks need to really upgrade their forward unit. However, I dont see them doing it through trading their D-core. That core can keep them relevant, which is important.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>But ask yourself "Why would the Ducks do this?". Why? He's got 2 cheap years, plus another season as an RFA. Why would they move him? They're a playoff team. Zaitsev doesn't make them better. A middling prospect doesn't make them better. A late 2nd rounder doesn't make them better. Why? "Here, take 6 years of this defenceman that we've soured on because we've decided that we're more of a contender than you". No. Not a chance.</div></div>
Oh, from the Ducks point of view it makes ZERO sense. Sorry, if it is a Toronto trade, I am only going to care about Torontos point of view. I dont really care about the other team lol. But you are right, realistically it would need to be an NHL ready player, maybe Johnnson and a 1st. To make it worth while for the Ducks?
