Team As Constructed - no Miller Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Knuckl3s</b></div><div>Schenn is NOT being healthy scratched over Poolman</div></div>
I think he will be, provided that Poolman is healthy, and the team moves OEL to the RS. The Canucks will be faced with a decision come TDL as to retain him or trade him similar to Motte last season. If he can be extended at a club-favourable number, then he would be more valuable to them during a playoff push if he is faced with less minutes. If he wants to chase another Cup and/or indicates he won't resign with the Canucks, then he is a good trade chip for '23 or '24 draft capital.

Maybe if Poolman is hurt. Like it or not, Myers is a top4 D. He has been played like one by multiple NHL coaches, starting in his rookie year. He eats minutes. He is good from the red line out.
Is he a good top 4? Maybe not.
Perhaps Poolman and Schenn would be in a rotation as stay at home Dmen to manage Rathbone's inegration.
But if Schenn is regularly playing top4 minutes, the team is really in trouble.

Rathbone is waiver exempt until '23-24.
Happy to shift him in instead of Burroughs.

B/C of the inclusion of a late 1st or the term/value of Girard? They will have to extend Byram, who showed he can play top minutes for COL this past offseason. Sure, COL could try to move out EJ (and will likely try) but I feel they need to replace Kadri. Miller's extension is not going to be in the $8.5M x 7 range. Nobody is that crazy. Look at Kadri's situation - a player 2 years older who also scored at a high level (87 pts) in a contract year and teams didn't (or couldn't) cave to huge demands thus far. I think Miller is going to get a 5 year deal, probably in the $7M range, giving COL money to still resign MacKinnon, Newhook & Byram to market deals.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>felixf21</b></div><div>That's not how ltir cap works</div></div>
I believe there are two ways for LTIR to work; this would be the second way, where the team uses LTIR prior to starting the season.
"If a team cannot be cap compliant on opening day without using LTIR, the LTIR Pool is the amount the team exceeds the Cap. For example, if a team is $3M over the Cap and places a player on LTIR with a $4M Cap Hit for the opening roster submission, the LTIR Pool is the $3M that the team exceeded the cap". Basically the Leafs cannot accrue space during the season - they can only spend up to to amount they exceed the cap as an absolute amount. So - yeah - this works just fine.

Yeah - he is in this case. 2 years left on a deal ($6M AAV) that VAN doesn't want to (nor can really afford to) pay. He solves the ANA issue of needing to get to the floor. I would be ecstatic if VAN could get value for Myers, but honestly, that wouldn't happen unless a.) VAN retained money or b.) VAN waited until the '23 TDL or the '23-24 offseason (post-Sept 15) to move him along when his cap hit is $6M but his actual payment is $1M.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>???? But obtaining Ferland or even Weber doesn't help Vegas with their cap. Don't know why you think it does. Now I agree Roy or any player traded might get minimal return as team won't want to help Vegas but also there are few teams to cap to obtain players without sending cap back to Vegas.</div></div>
How does it not? Vegas can exceed the cap through the summer by a certain threshold. All it means to the best of my understanding is that by starting the season with a non-cap compliant lineup and using LTIR, Vegas does not accrue daily cap space through the season, but can pay out salary equivalent to the amount they exceed the cap starting day 1 of the regular season. So by extension, the Knights could pay their RFAs the amount that they are in excess of the cap and still field a competitive team. I agree its complicated, because the team cannot accrue space, that it may be possible (again) to dress a lineup of only 17 skaters (which sucks). I still think that Vegas will need to move out some money this offseason (in addition to the Dadonov move) because relying on LTIR (as they did all last season) is a crappy way to manage your lineup. Personally, I just like to watch the Knights suffer.

As I replied to the VGK fan - Teams will pay the absolute minimum possible to help out Vegas. Nobody wants to help McCrimmon out of the problem of his own making. Martinez and Pacioretty may have value in a trade to help the VGK avoid the use of Weber (and potentially Ferland's LTIR) but why then would the team reportedly resign 31yo Reilly Smith to a 3x$5M deal? The answer to me is a plan to run it all back with as much of the roster as possible and potentially use LTIR to do so. I don't see teams going the Offer Sheet route, as it is too unpredictable, but it is an option. I guess they could go back to the well and offer a draft pick up front in trade. But hey, this is a forum to offer ideas and I am a little biased to my team.

Well, as I see it, nobody really wants to help McCrimmon out at all. I think that it will be difficult (though not impossible) for Vegas to move on from Pacioretty and Martinez (given their injury history and age. I am just assuming LTI will allow for the team to retain their services and make another push - especially since you have hired a coach in Cassidy who will likely maximize the output from the team. I am not telling you anything you can't already see for yourself given the state of the team's cap. If Vegas wants to keep Hague, Howden, Kolesar and Roy, teams are going to try and take advantage. The alternative, I guess, is to offer sheet Roy and give Vegas a pick or two.

As a Canucks fan who very much thinks that Miller salary retained alone would be nice and that Chuck Fletcher is someone who could be taken advantage of (given he signed Rasmus Ristolainen to a multi-year deal), I believe that the Vancouver 1st would need to be included. The only other alternative, would be to retain the Vancouver 1st and offer up a cost-controlled player/players who would fit the mold of a Torts-style team OR to accept a non-palatable contract (like JVR) in return.

I think that JBD & the two 2nds are fair value for a player who produced at low-end 1st line level (52 pts, with only 3 total points on the PP) despite being moved up and down the lineup *and* is under team control for 4 more seasons at a very reasonable number ($4.95M AAV). The '22 TBL second is basically a 3rd. Anticipating a jump forward for OTT in 22/23 means that their own 2nd will not be in the top 40 picks, at which point, its basically a measure of what does your board say vs mine.

It's more that it seams like his time in Pittsburgh might be done. Canucks have talked about changing the culture and who better than Malkin who has accomplished everything in his career and has the connection to Rutherford and Allvin. He would be a great mentor for Petey, podkolzin, and Bo (and everyone else of course but could really elevate those guys into winners).</div></div>
I understand the pedigree with Malkin. But this is another 35+ contract that cannot come off the books if the guy retires. It doesn't appear to fit with Mgmts stated desire to a.) get younger and b.) have flexibility. If the Canucks were closer to contending, I would wholeheartedly endorse a Sundin-style signing (1 year at a high number). There are other needs.

You might not have a choice. Vancouver is offering VGK the chance to retain Smith by putting Ferland on LTIR to start the season. His $3.5M fits within the ability to exceed the cap during the offseason. VAN also adds the '23 pick to offset the loss of Dadanov, who I believe the Knights will still want to move on from so they can resign more important younger pieces in Howden and Hague. They can't keep all three of their RFAs (4 if you include Kolesar). I think Dallas will take a step back next year, so it should be a higher 4th. It also fits the realm of offers made in the past of alleviate cap concerns.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Angusc</b></div><div>What's the rationale behind signing Forsberg if the team does trade Miller? There are other cheaper options that can replace him if he is moved. Also, Forsberg's contract seems to be an albratross.
If they did that, It'd be like Miller 2.0, except with 7 years</div></div>
Miller would want term on his FA deal at age 30. You get Forsberg now (age 28). You still need to find a way to (on the aggregate) replace his offense. I figure by trading Miller away and signing Forsberg, the team will recover some of the offense. I figure with better puck movers on the backend (Schneider, Rathbone and a full season of Dermott), that should also help offset his loss. Am fine with exploring cheaper options, but need quality - not retreads - and do not want to sacrifice picks the team can't afford to lose via an improbable off sheet.
