I think you overvalue Rust. He scored some big playoff goals, but has the lowest PP/60 of penguins forwards and doesn't really produce when he's not playing with Sid.

Shooting 14% in the playoffs isn't a skill... it's being lucky

Pens aren't going to a be able to keep him next year and probably shouldn't as he is basically at his statistical peak.

Basically, if you want something good you gotta pay. A 4th and Wilson is near worthless and isn't getting his deal done.

Also, who gives a crap about a 2nd vs 3rd. If that's ur problem idk what to tell you. Ron Hainsey cost a 2nd so...</div></div>

Under rust on the cap friendly roster ...

He scored 7 post season goals after scoring 15 regular season. To win another cup you need guys who show up ... He shows up. Everyone can't play with Sid. He's the go to for anyone talking point production from the Pens. Hornqvist? only scores with Sid. Kessel? Only scores with Sid. Sid should have 200 points for all the credit he gets.

I would agree if 14% was one playoff. It was a playoff, followed by a season, and then another playoff. Lucky? I thought it was playing with Sid? :P It's poise. It's the patients and smarts enough not to take a crappy shot but wait for another play to come along ... if it's luck, then I want that lucky SOB playing for my team.

Why wouldn't the be able to keep him next year? He's a RFA. We'll be compensated no matter where he plays next year, and you're talking like he's going to make $4m or something. You're paying Sheary $3.5m and he just plays line 1 WITH SID. He doesn't pk, and his production in the bottom 6 will be a larger drop then what Rust will put up, and he'll PK, can PP, and if he could played center we wouldn't be shopping for a center. It actually sounds like you value him quite a bit as well. And Karlsson is an RFA at seasons end as well ... so same boat. Do you think Karlsson is worth less money?

I don't disagree but if what you give up hurts your team worse then making another move then why not make another move? Do the pens have a better shot at a 3rd cup with or with out Rust? If your answer is with, then this deal doesn't make sense. There are other pieces to move for other pieces. Wilson might not. But Wilson produced what Karlsson did. Package Wilson/Kunhackle/, a 4th and a prospect (other then Sprong, Jarry, and Aston-Reese) just might ... or set up a package to make both teams feel like the winning.

Here's what I came up with and I'm not saying it better or going to work just something I think most fans wouldn't mind and wouldn't hurt the team ...
Haula, E
Karlsson, W
Merrill, J
2018 2nd round pick (VGK)

Kuhnhackl, T.
Määttä, O.
Hagelin, C ($750,000 retained).
2018 1st round pick (PIT)
2019 4th round pick (PIT)

Hainsey ... That how negotiations go when you're not in a position of power. If you're hunger you'll pay far to much to eat. Hainsey was a late season trade to make up for multiple injuries to defensemen. They did what they felt the had to. Imagine what a Hagelin can get at deadline.

Kruger was traded for 5th ... Methot a 2nd and prospect that no one believes will ever play in the NHL .... Marcus Johanson for two second round picks ...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DontToewsMe19</b></div><div><div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Adamitis</b></div><div>Sheahan is a good option I hadn't considered but those trade values are really out of wack

Going to cost the Pens significantly more for Sheahan AND to basically dump Hagelin</div></div>

Now that I look and analyze everything, Pittsburgh wouldn't have to pay anymore to get Sheahan, he has some good upside, but he is coming off of a season where he had 2 goals in 80 games and both came in the last game. Paying Pouliot for him was actually too much, so I replaced him with a third. The Hagelin wasn't just a salary dump, San Jose is weak on LW and they could use some more speed even after they have Boedker. Hagelin is no Marleau, but he'll help.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ess</b></div><div>Sheahan is slow and had an ENTIRE season off, while playing in 80 games. DET would have to retain a $1m for me to consider him. I would not give Pouliot and a 3rd for him, DET should say yes before you offer the second piece. I'd offer a 5th rounder and ask for $1m in retention ... then offer an AHL depth player with the 5th at most.

Hagelin, I think he's has more value at trade deadline, but he's also Crosby's BFF on the team, so moving him at the dead line might be bad. I think the package is about right, but I'd rather get a second pick as I think it will have more value to trade for other parts. Even a 5th or moving our 5th for their 3rd or 4th.</div></div>

As I do agree that I overpaid for Sheahan, I think you are undervalueing him. He has had good years, just had an awful season. Pouliot is a very expensive piece, so I replaced him with a third. I hope that's good enough. I did take 2 4th's instead of Carpenter though.</div></div>

Did his wife/daughter have cancer? He played 80 games last season, 80 before he scored a single goal. I get bad nights or a rough season where your production is down, but he didn't produce enough to earn him his entry level salary, let alone his $2m. Screw seasons past. What has he done lately? Vegas traded Kruger for a 5th and he had a better year then Sheahan.

I don't doubt he's better then last season showed, I just wouldn't be willing to found out for 2 picks and $2m cap hit. If he doesn't work were do you get the cap space to get another 3C? ... Eric Fehr, a 4th, and Oleksy for a Corrado (who is just crushing it in the ... AHL? ECHL? Where ever he is I'm sure he was worth it) ... I wouldn't want to have to give up third 3rd rd pick and more to clear cap space to then be able to over pay to fix the problem IF there are viable options still available.

To much of question mark for a team that need 1 or 2 pieces to run at a 3rd cup in 3 yrs.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Starsfan98</b></div><div>Imo, Palat is more valuable than Kessel (at least for TB). He has much better contract, and I most certainly wouldn't like to break the triplets just to get a player whose last two seasons has been good because of the players he plays with. I think that without Malkin or Crosby, Kessel would lose 15-20 points per season, and that is about the same amount of points that Palat does every season. Plus Palat is much younger, and hasn't exceeded his full potential yet. And adding Point, one of Tampa's greatest prospects to that trade is just wrong.</div></div>

Look at Kessel's career stats ... in TORONTO. He can put up points with no one. He puts up a lot of those points on the 3rd line next to Bonino ... NOT malkin and crosby.

However I agree that the deal doesn't make sense for TB. They don't lack scoring potential at all. They have youth that produces so Kessel doesn't really do it for them. A guy like Hornqvist or Max Pacioretty might make more sense since he gives them more physical edge, hence Kunitz signing. TB needs better depth at D and PIT doesn't have that unless they're going to replace it in another trade ... our prospects aren't there.

NMC is going to severely limit Kessel trades because the teams he'll want to go too are the ones that probably don't need him and aren't going to give up much to get him. I also wouldn't retain a darn thing if I'm the Pens. He earns what he makes and I don't need to trade him so bad I retain salary. The writer that started all this ****, Cooke, is a shock jock writer. He right shocking things about jocks to get people to talk about him, and the athlete.

Thread: Pens - Caps
Seems more like a deal for WSH then for PIT. Having won the Cup, you're renting 3 players that might work while giving up 3 players that do ... and to a rival. Granted WSH is going to stink a bit this year.

Rowney got it done for limited time during the regular season, but then played super well in the Playoffs. For less then half the cost I'd stick with Rowney at 4th center and add a potential replacement that can also play wing at around a million and have 2 players for the cost of Beagle. I like Beagle a lot, but don't think he adds so much that we should limit our depth to pay his $1.75m when we have a capable 4th at league min. I think Rowney is more likely to resign, and likely under a million.

Cole cost less, rocks in the playoffs, is the most physical defensemen we have, amazing shot blocker, and actually might resign for less then $4m, where Carlson is going to want Schultz money, and as a UFA will likely get it and more. He'd be the THIRD best right handed Dman on the team, so his play would be limited, especially on the PP, which means he doesn't get to do what he does best and isn't provide you what makes him so attractive to get. Unless you have a deal in place to move Letang and resign Carlson there doesn't seem to be a point to getting him, and not at the cost of Cole,

Hornqvist provides net front, is our leading checker, scores @ 0.5 pts a game consistently through the regular season and playoffs, he's a heart and soul kind of guy, and again there's a better chance of resigning him (at a somewhat reasonable deal because he likes where he's at) than Eller, who is just OK at $3.5m. I like Eller, but would rather fill 3C for more than just this season, especially when time is limited on Crosby/Malkin and so many teams are improving.

And at seasons end you're looking for new players for these spots. UFAs are expensive. Trading for RFA that can contribute would be my plan, even if that means moving picks and prospects and Sheary, Hagelin, and a Maatta to open cap space and entice teams to give em up.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dardicus729</b></div><div>If you are set on moving Mattaa, I think you use him in that Vegas deal, and maybe a second, that value seems to be more fair, and maybe another pick/prospect if they don't budge. I would like to see how Hunwick does before dismissing him for Petrovic, we have him for 3 years and according to Toronto fans hes pretty soild. Saves us assets and a roster spot. I like the Lowry and Dano deal, even though I like Armia better, I think Dano is closer to being a full fledged nhl-er so that's fine. and Lowry is just a big man down the middle and I think he'd fit in nicely. And lastly I pray Dumo only gets 4mil.</div></div>

It's not about dismissing Hunwick. He's the more versatile defenseman, which is why I use him as the 7th and slot him anywhere needed. Both Petrovic and Merrill are a bit under-cooked yet, but having Hunwick for 3 yr allows me to try to bring them along. Besides Letang is going to miss half the season.

I like Petrovic for a bunch of reasons. I think Maatta is more raw then people give him credit for, and his salary makes him more expendable. I like both Petrovic and Sceviour, but I modified a previous trade ... Maatta and Simon for Petrovic, Sceviour, and a 5th ... based on previous comments. Sceviour is worth more then the prospect, and I move up two rounds in the draft, which is supposed to be pretty deep this year.

Vegas deal - I've heard people say Haula is worth a 1st, but then again others say he's worth a 3rd. I thought a prospect and a 3rd. So I started there and figured Merrill would only take 5th or so due to similar trades. I'd go Haula and Merrill for Kuhnhackle, and two 3rds ... or Kuhnkackle, a prospect, and a 2nd if I have too. Just not Sprong or Jarry.
