Description
I seem to have settled on these players. Please add to the conversation rather then shitting on it.

Add 3 C/W, 2 more physical defensemen, 1 wild card forward ... 5 capable PKers and 5 (if not all 6) can play PP. 5 out of 6 are RFA at contracts end. Each person fills the void of someone currently (creating no visible holes) or those left by future UFAs.

Lowry (@24) adds hits, net front on PP, which makes it easier to part with Hornqvist at seasons end. His skill set seems perfect for the 3 or 4C, with offensive upside and great size.

Haula (@26) adds face offs, PK, PP, skill and speed ... if he is not needed at C then he moves to W and his skills make Hagelin a little more expendable. Starts at 3C, but moves to wing if Rowney proves he can handle the job (if he hasn't proved it already).

Sceviour (@28) adds speed, grit, and PK. He's played C/W, though limited faceoffs make him seem like more of a W. 3 short handed goals last year (Pens had 5 total). Might be able to play PP in a pinch. Good for 25 pts, but has put up solid # is limited playoff games. UFA at seasons end.

Dano (@22) is the wild card. He's struggled to find a home most likely due to trades (3 different teams in 4 years), but has a very nice skill set that might fill in nicely for Sheary or add depth scoring somewhere along the way. Has solid hit stats as well.

Petrovic (@25) adds a right hander, size and physicality, as well as some offensive upside, which eases the potential loss of Cole at seasons end, but his salary should also allow for more money going to resign Cole.

Merrill (@25) is a 2-way puck moving Dman, who also offers some physicality. I can see him turning out to be another Schultz or Dumoulin in PIT. He's got solid size and experience on the PP and PK in NHL and he's a lefty which might make him idea pairing with Schultz on the 2nd PP. Salary should also allow for more money to resign players in off season. I think he replaces Maatta nicely.

I have 8 NHL quality Dman because I don't chase names with salaries. So my team is deep at all positions, including Hunwick who will play 60 games just filling in for injuries and also for anyone underachieving.

Reaves ... not a fan. I get he can skate pretty well and hit in addition to fight. That only leaves 85% of the game left to learn. I'd rather play a guy like Sceviour who will lose every fight he's in because he contributes far more to the team. Sceviour and Lowry can check their stars (Sceviour, Lowry, Petrovic have all thrown down when needed) ... but everyone was talking about the WPG situation, which was Malkin hitting their star (Wheeler) and not the other way around ... either way I find it silly to spend $1.2m in cap on a guy who can't play a complete game. Sestito looks to be more complete at half the cost.

Still have cap room and a bunch of assets to move to fill holes or replace players that aren't working out as the season goes on.

Not sure if I see LV dealing Haula. They had him re-signed to a new deal a day or two after drafting him so I would think he's pretty high on their organizational list.

That's a hard pass from Vegas. They'd be downgrading on Haula, plus giving Merrill for a third and fifth. Another good pick/prospect would have to be added for Vegas to even consider. I know if I were GMGM, I wouldn't think twice about saying no to that one.

I'm sure that Maatta could bring back more. Petrovic isn't that good, so if that's the main piece coming back here, it doesn't make a lot of sense for Pittsburgh to do it.

The Winnipeg trade does make more sense, especially if they think Pouliot can revive his career. But if the Jets only see Pouliot as a bust, it wouldn't go through. Moving Sheary for two assets makes sense, but I think both Dano and Lowry being included means that they have to be high on Pouliot.

While the team you have here is better than the one that currently exists, the trades required to make it work most likely wouldn't go through.

I think they'd rather not, but will if the right deal is offered. I'm not saying my deal is top notch, but it's what I'd start at. I'd consider adding another prospect or swap the 5th for another 3rd if they wanted.

As for how quickly he was able to resign ... it's not necessarily a sign of his value to the organization. He might have been a reasonable negotiator, or already had a deal in place with MIN that Vegas agreed to sign him at.

If you were the GM you wouldn't even attempt to counter offer? That's kind of the point of these postings; to find what it would take.

Trades usually come about via negotiation ... that's kinda what discussion I'm looking for here. I know the team is good. I can trade draft pics and put together and all-star team. I'm making an offer. If you wouldn't take it then please counter offer. Just because my initial offer doesn't work doesn't mean a tweak wouldn't.

If you are set on moving Mattaa, I think you use him in that Vegas deal, and maybe a second, that value seems to be more fair, and maybe another pick/prospect if they don't budge. I would like to see how Hunwick does before dismissing him for Petrovic, we have him for 3 years and according to Toronto fans hes pretty soild. Saves us assets and a roster spot. I like the Lowry and Dano deal, even though I like Armia better, I think Dano is closer to being a full fledged nhl-er so that's fine. and Lowry is just a big man down the middle and I think he'd fit in nicely. And lastly I pray Dumo only gets 4mil.

It's not about dismissing Hunwick. He's the more versatile defenseman, which is why I use him as the 7th and slot him anywhere needed. Both Petrovic and Merrill are a bit under-cooked yet, but having Hunwick for 3 yr allows me to try to bring them along. Besides Letang is going to miss half the season.

I like Petrovic for a bunch of reasons. I think Maatta is more raw then people give him credit for, and his salary makes him more expendable. I like both Petrovic and Sceviour, but I modified a previous trade ... Maatta and Simon for Petrovic, Sceviour, and a 5th ... based on previous comments. Sceviour is worth more then the prospect, and I move up two rounds in the draft, which is supposed to be pretty deep this year.

Vegas deal - I've heard people say Haula is worth a 1st, but then again others say he's worth a 3rd. I thought a prospect and a 3rd. So I started there and figured Merrill would only take 5th or so due to similar trades. I'd go Haula and Merrill for Kuhnhackle, and two 3rds ... or Kuhnkackle, a prospect, and a 2nd if I have too. Just not Sprong or Jarry.

That Florida trade is rough. Trading Maatta is all well in good but you are getting a bottom 6 defenceman and an above average 4th line grinder and sending Corrado as well. Not even close to fair return and the 3rd for a 5th doesn't close the gap at all.

Vegas really wanted Haula so i don't see them trading him with Merrill for that low of a return. Karlsson or Lindberg are better bets.
I don't think Dumoulin is getting 4 million even if he goes all the way to arbitration.

I like the Winnipeg trade and to get the most out of Lowry he would have to play in a 3rd line role.
