Agreed 100%. If he played on any other team with those stats, the narrative around him would be totally different. He's still a good player though but being part of that back to back cup core is carrying him a little.

Not what you think
Got to wait for the lottery, odds are someone will move up or down changing the complexion of the first 5 picks. There are quite a few teams that covet a defenseman so there is a solid chance the Habs could get a player they wanted anyway. I really don't want to give up Beck either. Would rather use draft picks to make up the difference if necessary.

A late 1st and a somewhat early 2nd was enough to get Alex Newhook last year. I can't fathom Carolina accepting essentially the same thing WITH Risto included. Who, I don't care who says otherwise, is a total and utter cap dump at the present moment.

I'll offer a different choice. Keep making Zegras trades!
What we should do is stop taking Trades, AGMs, comments, etc that we don't agree with as some sort of attack, that through power of persuasion, will make said action more likely to happen IRL.
Its a fantasy hockey site. If you don't like someone's opinion of a value/trade, move on..... or comment against it! Who cares, as long as its done with respect.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MNCountryClub</b></div><div>But the relative points of weakness aren't even remotely close to one another, and that's assuming Guerin is even dealing from a point of weakness to begin with. Which, I don't agree that he is. That's fine if you do, but it's hardly indisputable like it was in the case of Briere/Gauthier.
The entire argument is propped up on the opinion that once a GM a makes a player available, he damages his negotiating power to a significant enough degree that you're pointing it out. No issue with you having that stance, but that isn't a fact.
And agree - moving him for size/grit reasons would be quite dumb. Rossi plays hard and tough, I don't get Guerin's obsession with trying to be the nastiest team in the league.</div></div>
Its not a concrete rule as it may sound like im trying to make it but look at it from the perspective of the other users on here. Everyone's instant reaction would be why? That doesn't make sense. That's because it doesn't. That's the factor that changes the negotiation power and leverage.
He shouldn't even be available. If this was virtually any other market, you'd get the generic " laughs and hangs up" kind of comment. Logic dictates if Guerin isn't taking that stance with a player that 99% of other Gm's would, there is something wrong with the player. (There isn't - he's just smaller than he likes players) but seeing as any GM would come to that conclusion, Guerin is putting himself in a corner where he has to move him. Unless of course, as I mentioned previously, its not an actual rumor and he's perfectly fine keeping in Minny. I'm only basing this opinion on the idea that he is actively looking to trade him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MNCountryClub</b></div><div>Gauthier is not a good parallel at all. He was not under contract with PHI and outright said he would not sign. Rossi, however, has a contractual obligation with the Minnesota Wild and does not have an ounce of say in the matter. There is an iron clad legal difference between the two situations. That has exponentially more to do with trade price than whether or not a GM "made the player available."
We're just gonna have to agree to disagree here, and we can revisit the value if he does get dealt this summer.</div></div>
The point would be that both GM's were selling from a point of weakness. Gauthier because he was not going to sign with Philly and Rossi with the fact that it seems he's not a Guerin guy and he keep him despite him playing well. The actual exact details are not the same as i said, obviously. Similar only that one sense.
For sure we'll find out if he's gung ho on moving him. Hope he moves past the size thing and keeps him. He's finally turning into the player he was drafted to be.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MNCountryClub</b></div><div>Your theory about that tanking his value is incorrect, as has been observed extensively in any equity market such as stocks or housing. That would be true if all GMs were in cooperation against Guerin, but they're not. They're in competition with each other, as well. The price only needs to reach the point where the highest bidder feels like they're getting good value.
But you are correct in that Guerin is essentially telling the market what he does/doesn't value. Not a great strategy by textbook standards, but honestly, in today's NHL these GMs are all pals and really don't gouge each other the way you'd think. For the most part, they try and make fair deals. There's enough precedent around young players getting traded, that it's gonna be pretty formulaic. Team A gets Player X and Team B gets Player Y + Draft Pick Z.</div></div>
Hmm I still disagree with that first sentiment. NHL trading is different than stocks and the housing market but yes I do agree with the old boys club mentality of the GM's. I didn't mean to imply that teams were now going to bend Guerin over backwards as a result. More so that, in a vacuum, a player like Rossi after the season he had would reach a level of perceived value that would force other teams to start a higher starting point for negotiations. Making him available (With realistic expectations and not just "listening"), automatically changes the dynamic of that negotiation.
Again I didn't mean that now Minny would need to accept the first crap offer thrown at them and I agree 100% with the Team A gets Player X and Team B gets Player Y + Draft Pick Z assertion. The real question I was hinting to is what would be the difference between the hypothetical scenario mentioned above vs if Rossi was not being actively shopped. IMHO I think there would be a decent amount of value lost as a result.
A similar but not exact example of this was Philly with Gauthier. What would Philly have got in return if Gauthier never wanted out and they were just listening to teams offers? Different circumstance than with Rossi obviously but a parallel can be made.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MNCountryClub</b></div><div>Guerin values and prioritizes size/grit. That's pretty much what it boils down to.
He believes the team needs to have more of an edge/nastiness to it. Not saying you or anyone else needs to agree, but that's the reasoning. It has nothing to do with his value being less than what's perceived.</div></div>
That's what I assumed was the core reason for it but figured any GM making that somewhat known to other Gm's would be an absolute moron for doing so. In the game of business and negotiations, that is devaluing your own asset. No team would give you remotely what Guerin thinks he's worth then. Why would they? Whats the worst that will happen? Guerin will keep the asset that doesn't fit his team identity indefinitely? Risking devaluing him in the process? Hence why trying to sell him while his stock is at its highest.
This is just a theory based on the idea that he's actively being shopped of course. If Guerin is fine just keeping him until someone pays up, then there really isn't any smoke to this. Just a random rumor based on a team willing to listen and not reject instantaneously like others would normally do.

Fair. Unfair. It matters not.
Both teams would not deal with each other for such a big asset. Not when there would be other teams with less risky rivalries willing to offer equal to what Ottawa could offer. NOT TO MENTION That Marner would probably not want to waive to go to another hockey hotbed where every move is scrutinized just like before AND also is in such close proximity for ridicule of his prior team.

I think the value may be "fair". Really comes down to the draft table and a PHI coveting a guy at that 12th pick a lot. Based on my mock draft, that 12-14 are pretty even in quality so might not be a big enough drop off to consider it.

Agree with that sentiment 100%. This is the price for not going scorched earth type of rebuild unfortunately. Last year for sure was major drop off. This year however Im less worried. I know everyone is creaming their pants for Lindstrom but the truth is anyone from 3-10 is interchangeable. They all have equal potential, just different playing styles and abilities. All I ask from this mgmt is to take the BPA in their mind and not reach for a position just for need. If its a dman, take the dman.
Like I reiterated, the dman available at 5OV this year may make all other dmen in the entire organization available. Including Hutson for example.

Clearing up cap space need more goals
Not sure I see the logic for the Habs. The biggest need for the Habs is to reduce the number of roster players, not add to it. Distill the quantity into quality. Pageau is an upgrade on Dvorak for sure but is also more expensive, signed longer, and requires a retention slot from the Habs on Dvorak to get it done. All this just to distill Wahlstrom and a 2nd from a 3rd and a 5th? Wahlstrom has waiver potential and holds little value at the moment.
I think there is a deal to be made involving Pageau to the Habs but this to me doesn't do it.

Trading 5th OVR
Trading the 5OV for anything other than a legit, already top player, would be a bad move.
It literally makes more sense to move Guys like Guhle, Hutson, Xhekaj, etc than trading the 5ov.
I think people need to hear this: The player taken at 5OV this year is likely to be the best player of all players drafted since Hughes and Gorton have been at the helm, with the exception of Slafkovsky. It makes more sense to move any player we've drafted since Slaf than to move the 5OV.
Just because 5OV is not a unanimous pick does not mean it is less valuable, so we should trade it.

Questions for my fellow Habs fans
"I don't understand a lot of the Habs fans on this site." - Welcome to the club. :tearsofjoy
Free agency: The Habs cannot simply pick and choose who and when. Montreal as of right now may be one of the least desirable spots in the NHL. They'll make competitive offers to everyone that they want in hopes of convincing one of them. It may take years to snag the big free agent fish we'd want. They need to build the team first and then add the UFA IMO. Based on that, they still have one more year of developing players. One of the best players the Habs may have in the future isn't even drafted yet. (5 Ov)
Matheson: Fans are jumping the gun obviously. They see Hutson and assume they can already let Matheson go. They're just a little trigger happy. Matheson isn't going anywhere for the duration of his contract. He's clear and cut the best dman we have. Odds are he won't be resigned though based on the current LHD depth the Habs got. which is fine. Until Hutson is a 22+ min dman scoring 40+ points a year, Matheson ain't going anywhere.
Rebuilds: CF rebuilds and real life rebuilds are not the same. In CF, the goal to many is to continually trade any and all assets for more picks and prospects in an never ending cycle of trying to upgrade all while being as conservative as possible to avoid looking "stupid". The CF way leads to in real life teams like Buffalo, etc. The only rebuilds like that, that truly work, are the ones that landed a generational star or 2 in the span of a couple drafts. The goal is to win the cup, not have the most 1st round draft picks on the team.
Cap culture: I think Habs management are more than willing to give any big UFA like Reinhart the bag but I kind of feel like he isn't the right fit for right now. But obviously wouldn't say no. I think Stamkos would be a more apropos target because they wouldn't have to sign him long term. Essentially using him as a bridge to when they will be ready to add the 80M+ player contract in their prime. He'll be what makes the current players on the team better and that is needed more IMHO. Habs need scoring sure, but they also need a presence in the locker room a la Weber/Price to get these guys into a winning mentality. Look at what guys like Staal, Perry, Weber, Price etc did for the youth in that 2021 run. This year Monahan played a huge role for some of the younger guys and his presence was never replaced. Gallagher is the only one we have left but he is not of that echelon of leadership and gravitas.

Does Ottawa want to get their draft pick guy
If the Boston pick is like 29-32 than the value is probably right but is it worth it to draft "your guy" that much? Not really. It all comes down to how management value getting their guy vs the next BPA. I think most GMs now understand its a flawed idea to trade up at such a cost on prospects. It was more prevalent in the older days when scouting wasn't as good as it is now.

MTL and NYI cap dump idea
Without retention, Anderson is untradeable. For anything. Well, ok for Marc Vlasic 1 v 1 maybe but that's it. Which defeats the purpose of trading him in the first place.
There is only 3 options. Keep Anderson and try to revive his game enough to make a team bite on a trade next year or trade him with like 50% retention now for like a 3rd/4th rounder at best or Buyout.
The only realistic option is the first one.
