Yeah I agree, I'm not thrilled about losing Dubé either. I had initially tried to do the trade with Mangiapane instead, but I don't think he saves Tampa enough money for them to bite. As for Czarnik, like you, I also can't see him being resigned, but I'm not sure who else goes in that third line RW spot instead. Maybe Virtanen or Fast, but they will probably be too expensive. Maybe you move Gawdin up to the third line and sign a guy for league minimum for the 4th line, but gotta be careful who that is as we wouldn't want to kill Phillips' development.

Clearly you folks aren't familiar with Ryan. While putting up marginally fewer points than Johnson, he does so with significantly less ice time and with lower quality linemates. Furthermore, Ryan's underlying numbers are far better than are Jonhson's. And perhaps most importantly, Ryan is extremely important in the faceoff dot, as he wins over 55% of his draws, many of which are crucial defensive zone draws. Oh and Ryan is a PK specialist too.

I would argue that he is an extremely useful player, and absolutely is worth the $3 million he is paid. Definitely a better contract than Johnson (as useful as Johnson might otherwise be).

I can't see the Flames giving up a 1st for Murray. I like Murray and I think he's a good goalie, but there are just too many other goalies of similar quality out there that we could get in free agency without having to give up the asset (Markstrom, Holtby if he can regain form, etc.). That's not to mention the other reportedly available goalies who might cost us an asset but would probably come as part of a bigger deal (Andersen, Korpisalo, Kuemper, Rask, maybe one the NYR goalies, etc. ). And we could always resign Talbot and I'd be okay with that too. It's a buyer's market so in my estimation, it's not the best idea to pay a first round pick.

I also think Pittsburgh will have a tough time getting a huge return on any Murray deal, as the team does not exactly have great leverage in negotiation. Their cap is already tight, and I can't imagine ownership will want to go into the season with 3 goalies on the roster. Pittsburgh has to make a move so they might have to settle for less than they hope with Murray and/or make a bigger 'hockey' deal.

Good points on Virtanen. I liked Ferland on that line back in the day because he had a good shot and was pretty good at supporting Gaudreau and Monahan, without doing anything too complicated. Haven't watched a lot of Virtanen but it sounds like he could be similar.

They have changed the CBA since then (as you seem to recognize). Teams are no longer allowed to trade conditional picks on a player signing or not. Now they simply have to give up the pick and hope that the player signs. Or, teams can trade a more substantial amount because they know that the player has already been technically signed (a sign then trade, as I'm suggesting here).

Either way, I got this idea from TSN and Pierre Lebrun, who explained yesterday that this sign and trade option is a real possibility. He also explicitly mentioned that St. Louis would not be interested if they were only getting a 5th round pick in return. While it is pretty unlikely that the Flames move him, they would be open to it if it meant getting a top line centre, a top 4 RD, or a top 6 RW. The reason I suggested moving him to St. Louis was because he was part of a bigger deal in which Calgary got two of those three list items (Kyrou + Pietrangelo; see my other post).

In terms of the Boston roster, it's tough to see a good fit for a fair return. Carlo or McAvoy would obviously be awesome for us, but I know that there is a less than 0 percent chance you trade either one (and even if there was a chance, Calgary would have to add a massive piece going back). And while Studnicka looks alright, I can't see the Flames trading Hanifin for such an unproven player.

Thing is the Flames need to be drafting numerous quality centres either way. Our pipeline of centres is thin as is.

Why am I trading Monahan then? Because as good as he is, I don't see this team winning a cup with him as #1C. Trade him for good pieces now while you can, and try to get your eventual replacement through the draft. Let Lindholm hold down the fort till then; I think he's gonna put up similar numbers to Monahan in that role anyway.

You're correct, it's definitely not a good idea lol but a guy can dream.

That said, the way I look at it, we could trade Backlund to a team like Buffalo or Pittsburgh. I think we can also work out a deal with Lucic/Seattle which makes all parties involved happy. If not, there's also a chance that he retires. That's already $10.5 million in savings, and Giordano comes off the books at the same time as Barkov/Gaudreau/Tkachuk, so there are some savings to be made there as well. Again, not saying it's a good idea, but I think it's possible.
