<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Like I said more than once, it's more about the concept than the exact packages.
And dude, the original idea came from a Hawks fan and the secondary tweak idea also came from a Hawks fan. Apparently, not everyone in CHI agrees with this view. Probably because not every Hawks observer thinks Jones is worth keeping as a 1RD. I just think those folks are right...
... and also that Leafs fans are waaaaay more obsessed with trading Marner to the Blues, and enough is enough. :squinty</div></div>
There are three recent CHI ACGM's that include Marner. Two of them are casuals that are almost never on here, and one of them made the proposal as an example of what not to do, and it didn't include Jones. Most CHI fans who want to sell low or dump Jones contract either A. Don't know what they are talking about. B. Are racist twitter loud mouths. or C. Both. Most of the people who are CHI regulars on here agree with me, if not entirely, at least to some extent.
The reality is Stan Bowman WAYYYY overpaid for him in trade and overpaid him on his contract as well. But he is still a very effective RD1 that CHI has too much invested in to dump or sell low on. Plus, he has a full NMC, and helps us to the cap floor, as well as providing experience, leadership, and stability. Any players CHI considers moving valuable assets for should be like a Jarvis or Mercer or someone of a similar age or younger and a similar caliber.
I am kind of intrigued to see how many Marner to STL proposals there are now, though. I thought the Marner to CHI ones have already been beyond obnoxious just today alone, but also going back to the last few summers after TOR fans single him out because they can't win a playoff series. haha.
Which also brings me to my next point, why would any team want to pay a haul for him at this age with the contract he will probably be asking for, if he consistently cannot perform in the playoffs? Idk, though. Maybe a change of scenery and playing under different systems with different players could have some sort of positive effect on his playoff performance. But he will also be on the wrong side of 30 with a giant contract by the time CHI is ready to contend.

CHI declines. You could take Jones out of the proposal and I would still say no.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Setting aside the rest (either because I agree with your point or because it's not super relevant), having Marner would likely do far more for you than having Jones, both next season and moving forward.
If you're alluding to some inner team/management aspect I'm unaware of, cool. Based solely on what works best for them, ehh... don't agree on that part at all.
But it's not like my mission is to help the Hawks, man. I'd settle for giving Toronto AGMers a new obsession. :cool</div></div>
What business does a rebuilding CHI team have trading valuable assets for a 27 year old pending UFA that doesn't even have a pre-negotiated extension? How is that not relevant? Are you talking about short term gains? And what is it you don't agree with? Because that second line was pretty vague as to what you were referring to.
CHI might get short term gains out of it, as far as some more exciting play at the top of the lineup. But that doesn't win you stanley cups, and it might even throw a big old wrench in our rebuild that we are already fully committed to, and send us into long term mediocrity. Which I'm sure you would probably like. haha.
Also, I'd be willing to bet that, if Marner were to sign an extension with CHI, he is going to want a raise and term, and it would probably cause cap issues by the time CHI is actually ready to contend again. Also, why wouldn't a rebuilding team just wait until he hits free agency, which is seemingly inevitable at this point?
The reality is Kampf is a cap dump, and Lily and Holmberg aren't that valuable or interesting. I wouldn't trade Reichel and the 1st for Marner, and I wouldn't trade Jones for a cap dump Lily and Holmberg. Which is essentially how that trade breaks down.
TOR fans are already obsessed with trading Marner to CHI. So, you're just adding fuel to the fire. lol.

CHI should not be interested in trading assets for Marner at all, let alone trading some pretty valuable assets to TOR without an extension already in place. I doubt CHI is interested in moving Jones either. This just isn't happening. Or, at least, it shouldn't.

Just some targets
CHI should not be targeting Marner, and I doubt he would waive his full NMC anyway.
Two spots in the draft isn't worth taking on JGP's contract, IMHO, and Wahlstrom isn't worth enough to make up for that.
Personally, I wouldn't mind bringing Kaner back, but I highly doubt they do it. Stamkos... maybe, but he will more than likely have his pick of teams and I'm not sure why he would pick CHI. Same with Tanev. I could possibly see Tuevo and JVR, though.

For sure. But if he is willing to waive to CHI (or anywhere) and they want to work something out after his bonus is paid, I think CHI should be in on it, even if it is just retention.

I doubt CHI would accept that proposal, but I guess if they like Liljegren enough and think he has more room to grow and/or fits what CHI is trying to build, it could be worth it.

Also, CHI isn't taking on Kampf's contract for anything less than a 1st round pick. If we have to include a B prospect and/or a pick or two to balance the value out a bit, so be it, but we have no use for more mid to late round picks.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jco5ta5</b></div><div>Rare disagree. Not sure what 1 year of Tavares does for him or the Hawks except waste it.</div></div>
I don't even see how it is possible to disagree. Every team in the league would probably take Tavares for free if they could fit him in under the cap. Most teams would probably do it anyway and worry about creating cap space later. Not only that, but he is still a very good top 6 forward in the NHL. So, it isn't like we would be bringing in some overpaid bum. If he is willing to waive his full NMC for CHI this summer, he is probably also willing to waive at the trade deadline. Which would make him one of the biggest deadline trade chips of the last 20 years. Which means we get a good player for $900k in salary, and then flip him for valuable assets rather than spending valuable assets on a risky acquisition in the middle of a rebuild.
Tavares for free > Marner and a risky long term extension for a package of valuable assets ... All day, IMO. It might make more sense to go after Marner for some teams, but not CHI.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jco5ta5</b></div><div>I’d take Marner > Tavares and Hawks have plenty of trade chips. Could do Reichel + prospect already cooking + your 1st rounder in 2025 back? That would be after July 1 and a guarantee he’ll resign 8/$80ish</div></div>
CHI would squander Marners best years before they are actually ready to contend. At which point, his contract will start to become a problem, if it hasn't already. Also, he is a UFA next summer. I would MUCH rather take Tavares for free than use assets to get Marner. The two ideas aren't even in the same ballpark, to be honest. Taking one year Tavares for nothing after his bonus is paid for a rebuilding CHI team with a crap load of cap flexibility would be a no brainer.

No Marner unless its for cheap
Interesting and realistic take. But, as you allude to in the description, CHI should not even consider trading assets for players like Marner with or without an extension in place. It just doesn't make sense. I'd consider making a big offer for a guy like Jarvis, or another player of a similar age and caliber. But for these late 20's superstar caliber pending UFA's, CHI just isn't there yet. We'd probably end up squandering their best years and they would become cap problems by the time CHI is actually ready to contend.
