HABS summer 24
You've got the required main piece for Zegras in 6OA, the trade could be fine tuned to work since the ask would be 6OA+Beck.

I genuinely believe Verbeek would have zero interest in Marner, and no, Zegras isn't softer than Marner, it's the other way around.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>The whole point to acquiring Mitch Marner would be to put him on a line with Gunner Vatrano. So we'll trade you Sidorov and the first and your choice of Killorn or Strome for Mitch Marner and you won't have to retain. Then we might, just might, be able to persuade him to re-sign with us next summer.
But as my esteemed friend GiggyWithGibby says, given the fact that Marner's a lame duck, with a hideously expensive cap hit, I don't think that Pat Verbeek is very interested in him.</div></div>
To be honest, none of the several valid points you bring up are the reasoning behind my thoughts.
I think Marner is the most elite support piece the league has ever had, and I genuinely believe Verbeek probably looks at a player like Marner and sees everything he views as "wrong" with the league today. Soft, Uber skilled, obnoxiously paid, diva, etc.
Like yes, Zegras has many more warts than Marner does, but I think the same attitude problems are there, or frankly, they are worse with Marner than they are with Zegras.

You're not asking for an unreasonable return, but I genuinely don't believe Verbeek has an interest in Marner.
He probably did in Nylander prior to his extension, but not Marner.

He's still a legit puck-moving defenseman, but agree totally he has work to be done on the defensive side of the puck. Was more a project for Anaheim for a 6th round pick. But I can see your point but he wouldn't be a bad gamble for a 6th round pick.... I mean if I said a 2nd rounder or something? Okay call me nuts I will own that, but I figured a 6th rounder for a team that showed interest in him before. I didn't however, watch the preseason game you were talking about lol</div></div>
I honestly think you guys should throw him on RW next season and see what happens, as I don't think he'll ever be a NHL quality RHD.
Only reason we claimed him was to let Jamie Drysdale hear the branch creak over his contract extension.

Bruh, we claimed Lassi once already and we IMMEDIATELY threw him back onto waivers after a preseason game. Why would we pay for him?
Like seriously, go check the highlights of that game, bro was straight up CLUELESS on defense.
Probably the worst draft bust for the Sens in franchise history.

If he only had a full NTC you'd have some leverage, but Marner has a full NMC, so the only leverage Brad has is telling him "we won't be resigning you, so if you want an 8th year, give us your short list"
To which Marner could very easily respond "F*** you, you'll get nothing, I walk in FA"

"This post isn't serious" doesn't absolve you from getting flack. If it wasn't serious, you could have left it unposted. You put it on a public forum, you are subject to public backlash.
And that "poverty franchise" has made it past the first round the same number of times the leafs have in the last 10 years.

Leafs 24 Offseason - Marner to the Ducks
We can give Dostal the keys while keeping Gibson in the fold.
Frankly, I'm not sure Verbeek would even want Marner on the roster. Doesn't hit, doesn't seem to have heart of a champion, can't run his own line, can't rise to meet the occasion, already paid $11 mil and likely wants a raise in a year when he probably deserves a pay cut.
Right now Marner is reading as Kessel 2.0. an important contributor to a team, but not a guy you build around.
Marner has the 12th highest cap hit in the league next season. Every player ahead of him either signed their big money deal as their third contract, is a Leaf, or is Connor McDavid.

Time to break the core
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Tell us all why one season of Mitch Marner is worth more than seven or more seasons of Trevor Zegras.
Meanwhile, Gibson repeats his refusal to go to Toronto.</div></div>
Given how much "Zegras + Gibson" I've seen in the last 24 hours, I wonder what Toronto media outlet or guy with a podcast proposed it.
Should also point out, Marner was covering Pasta on the series wining goal. I think this series showed that Marner is an elite support piece, but Marner can't anchor his own line, yet he's paid like a guy who should be able to.
So the question becomes, who is taking a shot or Marner? Can someone convince him to take a pay cut to get his 8 year deal around 9-10 mil?

It's 11 million against the cap while being less than 1 million in real salary owed, and gives Bedard another former 1OA to guide him for a bit.

Colorado
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LimeyBarsteward</b></div><div>Here I disagree my brother from another mother (and father). There is a long history of playing rookie centers on the wing to allow them to acclimatize to the NHL without the pressure of being great defensively. In fact I would say that Mackinnon was moved to center too early. He took a step back after taking stazs center role.
Richie might well be a top center as his ceiling but he’s not going to be there yet. he would really benefit from time in the ahl that he won’t get so spreading out the learning curve will be important.</div></div>
Taking a step back is indicirive of learning a new position, no player moving from wing to developing at C at the NHL level is going to not have a hit in their points totals, especially doing so in a top 6 role.
