You have the Habs at some $48k under the cap next season in this scenario which is a problem to begin with because it leaves them NO wiggle room to start the season. Then you have them near the cap, which will not be going up for a few season, with both Suzuki and Evans up for their bridge contracts after next season and Caufield the following year. You'd be setting yourself up for massive cap headaches.

Finna Stacked
The Drouin et al trade to the Kraken as proposed here is silly. Why would SEA pick up almost $9mil per season in combined salaries for Drouin and Byron over the next couple of season? It's like you needed to dump salary to make your numbers work so you threw a bunch of players into a random deal to Seattle?

If Weber is out for the year
If I am the Sabres, the only way I trade Eichel to the Habs is if Suzuki is part of the deal...not saying the Habs would/should do it, just saying that Suzuki would likely be the deal-breaker on any potential Eichel to the Habs deal.
I'm also not sure that Danault signs with the Habs at $4.8 mil. I think he might sign elsewhere for $4.8 mil/yr but not in MTL, especially if the rumours were true that he was offered more than that per season last off-season.

That's fine, not going to argue with you and, as luck would have it, neither of us is the GM for the Jets or Habs so we'll never get to have that discussion. :) I think calling Ehlers one of the more dynamic players in league is a stretch and, if your starting point in a trade is Suzuki, meaning you'd be asking for more assets than that in return, it would be a non-starter for me. I would not blame you for asking for more, but I wouldn't make the trade. Cheers!

Ovy help Price Weber for the stanley cup
The only place Ovy is playing next season is Washington, I don't see him going anywhere else. As for Drouin to Seattle, every Habs fans seems to think that is what is goin to happen, mostly to get Drouin's bad contract off their hands. The only way Drouin to Seattle happens is if the Habs sweeten the deal and I'm not talking a 6th round draft pick. I'm talking Poehling or Primeau or a 1st + Drouin in return for a mid-round raft pick...that's the only way Drouin ends up in Seattle. The Kraken have ALL the leverage here.

These mock trade exercises are interesting and funny at the same time. From your perspective you're writing "... deal with MTL for Ehlers would have to start with Suzuki" meanwhile 99% of Habs would argue. "No way we'd give up Suzuki in a trade for Ehlers even straight up...Suzuki is just starting his career and nowhere near having reached his maximum upside yet". :)

regardless of outcome
1. Danault refused a $5 mil a year deal last summer, he's not signing for less than that after the playoffs he's had.
2. I realize that this is just fun, Armchair GM ****s and giggles stuff but your MTL/NSH deal is ridiculous. You are suggesting sending 9 assets to NSH for two players who will be FA's at the end of next season.

Not everyone take ACGM exercises as seriously as others. Many just want to see their favourite players stick around or they add players they like to fill in roster spots without paying attention to the long-term ramifications of those moves.

It was widely reported that Danault refused to sign at $5mil a year at the end of last season, no way he will sign for that amount now (...maybe 6x$6mil gets it done?) I think you're being a little generous with KK, both in term and in AAV. No way they sign Perry for 4yrs... not sure Perry would want to sign for 4yrs either, the man is 36 and he does not play a style that is conducive to lasting until he is 40. I agree with you that Tatar is done with the Habs and some of his $ can be used to increase the offer to Danault.

If are missing the playoffs at TDL
I find it weird that so many people would like the Habs to make trades to stockpile draft picks when there is no real proof that additional picks really add up to anything. Since 2010...so, a decade +, the top 5 players drafted by the Habs (...only counting those that have played in the NHL and in no particular order) - Gallagher, Sergachev, Galchenyuk, Lehkonen and Kotkaniemi...so, it's not like they've been cleaning up. Also, before anyone chimes in that it is all because Trevor Timmins or Marc Bergevin sucks at their jobs... since Bergevin has been with the Habs, 2/3 of all 2nd round picks in the league never play more than 100 NHL games and 3/4 of 3rd round picks don't play more than 100 NHL games so it is not like many teams are truly killing it during the draft unless they pick consistently in the top half of the first round for a few seasons. Even the Lightning who many point to as one of the best drafting teams in the league only had 11 of their 53 draft picks between 2012-2018 play over 100 NHL games.

Bergeron is currently Top 5 in the league and scoring (...that could change, of course, but the larger point is that he still produces regularly), he has a history of playing with Crosby and Sid is very comfortable with him...also one of the best faceoff men in the world. Unless he is injured, I don't see Bergeron being left off the team.

Have to agree with "TheFlamingC" here, many coaches do not want d-men playing on their off-side. Now, I'm not saying a country would pick a second-pairing AHL guy instead of an NHL guy playing his off side but, all things being equal, many coaches now prefer sticking to d-men playing their strong side.

I think the inclusion of Lafrenière is a little optimistic. I think he will be good but I'm not sure he'll have the kind of impact in his first season and a half to make him a Top 6 guy on such a deep team. But, who knows, if he shows that well early in his career I'm sure they will bring him along.

I think they match but also, as good as he looked this season, $5.5mil a year is lot of money to throw at a guy when you really have no idea if this season was him finding his groove as an NHLer scorer or if it was a flash in the pan and he ends up being a $5.5mil a year 14 goal a year scorer.

I don't understand why people get so caught in 1st line, 2nd line, 3rd, line, etc. It doesn't really matter forward we believe should be on the team's "first line", all we should care about is whether the combinations put together by the coaching staff have chemistry and can create offense together. What if Suzuki doesn't mesh well with Drouin and Anderson but has great chemistry if he is put between Kovalchuk and Armia? Does that make Suzuki the Habs 3rd line centre? Does it make Kovalchuk and Armia first line wingers? No, it just means those three guys have chemistry together and when they are playing well they'll get more ice time, when they are off their game they'll get less ice-time or maybe the lines will get switched up.

How I would start next year
1. I'm not sure why the Habs would trade Kulak just yet. The next NHL season will be very compressed and there will likely be more injuries as a result. Teams already need to be 8 deep on defense in an ordinary season, in a compressed schedule you might need to be 9 or 10 deep.
2. I like the idea of the Habs trading for a second 1st round pick but that just seems to be a lot for the 21st pick overall unless there is a guy still available at 21 that the Habs had much higher on their board.

I'd also be careful about anointing Cayden Primeau as the "real deal". He has been solid in college and at World Jrs. but let's wait until he has faced pro players for a year or two before handing him the key to the Canadiens crease for the next decade... the East Coast Hockey League and various European leagues are littered with goalies that have done well at World jrs. and couldn't cut it at the NHL level. Have a great day!

I realize this is just armchair GM stuff to have fun with but I don't get your Blues/Habs trade. Why would the Stanley Cup champions give up their captain, a solid young goalie and a 1st round pick to fill a need that doesn't seem to exist for the Blues at the moment. Price is a better goalie than Binnington but the Blues just won the cup with Binnington so I don't see why, even in fantasy armchair GM world, chasing another starting goalie at the cost of their captain and a 1st round draft pick.
