True! I've done this exercise with a few teams now and it is curious how some teams are really weak in some areas. I can understand that draft picks do not always pan out but there are teams that have had awful luck, or bad drafting, at different positions. I mean, if you look at the Leafs, their D is a weakness right now for a reason, they have an awful record in drafting D. Their 6 on my list of active NHLers that they drafted are - Rielly, Dermott, Gunnarson, Zaitsev, Schenn and Pateryn (...nothing to write home about)...so thin, that i added Zaitsev even though he was a FA pick-up from Russia and not a draft pick.

Absolutely but I think you are missing the point of the exercise...I simply put together a hypothetical lineup of players that were drafted by the Leafs and are currently active in the NHL. It's essentially a way to see how teams have done in the draft over the years more than anything else. Have a good one!

Please note that I realize that Zaitsev was not drafted by the Leafs but they were a little thin at the back end so I added him because he signed directly with the Leafs as a FA.

Biggest trade including Kessel and Malkin
If you are a PIT fans I can understand why the WPG trade makes all kinds of sense, getting two of the younger stars in the NHL in return for the back halves of Malkin and Kessel's careers. I guess it would all depend on how drunk Kevin Cheveldayoff is when Jim Rutherford calls him with this offer.

Agree with El_yogi... too much for Brodie. Also, the EDM trade is iffy. I realize that you likely made the EDM trade to make your numbers fall under the cap but that scenario would not make much sense if you were the actual GM. Why pick up Lucic at $6mil when both Weise and Peca will be UFA's following next season and off the books, leaving Alzner at a little over $4.5 mil. Also, being that close to the cap would put you in a pickle if you ever had injuries and had to make moves during the season.

Trouba has been fairly adamant about going back to the U.S. to play. Not sure the Habs would go after him in a trade if it's unlikely they can sign him long-term.

Changes v 2
Trouba has been vocal about not wanting to play in Canada so the Leafs, or any other Canadian team, might be real hesitant about making such a deal unless they get a guarantee from Trouba and his agents that he is interested in signing with them if traded there. Also, I believe that Pietrangelo has one year left on his contract yet you have him coming to the Leafs as a FA,,,you'd have to trade assets to get him to the Leafs for next season.

I have to agree with Frankyhabs on this one. You are asking the Canes to give up the guy who played more minutes than anyone else on their team, led his team in blocked shots, contributed offensively and who is signed to a team-friendly contract in exchange for a talented winger (...I'll grant you that) but a guy who has now played with two organizations, has not lived up to his potential and seems to drop into funks when things aren't going his way. What I often hear about Drouin is "Well, if he had a good centre like McDavid, Crosby or Tavares he'd score more goals" but you could say that of just about any NHL player not currently playing next to an all-star centre. I mean, heck, even I would be good for at least one or two goals per season playing on McDavid's wing! :)

Agreed...in this scenario one or two additional trades would have to be made to dump salary and make up for the extra $2 or $3 mil realistically needed to sign both Karlsson and Duchene and even then the team would be perilously close to the cap should any in-season emergencies arise.

Off season of change to contender
Interesting ideas! One thing to keep in mind is that with the moves you propose, you'd end up with , I believe,11 free agents at the end of the 20-21 season, all of them wanting more money and you are already sniffing the cap so that would make it hard.

even less so if we have to give up the Memorial cup MVP...</div></div>
I understand/agree with your concern re Lucic...side note, a reminder that just because a guy won Memorial Cup MVP doesn't guarantee that player will be a stud in the NHL. For every MacKinnon, Hall or Marner there is a Michael Chaput, Kelly Guard or Edgars Kulda.

Also, if we sign him it would cost a lot and which D do we protect for the expansion draft? Still, your trades make sense in term of value</div></div>
For all the fun that people have with this Armchair GM dream machine, they forget that teams will be limited to the number of players they can protect in the next expansion draft.

Geographic/rivalry dynamics at play here. I guess you can never say never but this is about as close as you'd get to something never happening, I think. Holland trading his generational talent down the road would take major gonads.
