With Toews (over 35) and Brown (hasn’t played in the NHL in 12 months) you can sign them both to bonus-laden contracts, so pay them both $1,000,000 in salary + bonuses and the extra cost doesn’t go against the cap until the next season (bonus overage) if I understand it correctly.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>So many fantastic Jack Hughes takes</div></div>
Clearly it is a value deal. It was signed just under 2 months into what was a pretty good 3rd season, which at the end would probably have gotten him what he ended up signing for. Good for everyone.
Thanks for sharing the hindsight.

Holland is in trouble
The max length that Bouchard will sign for on a bridge deal is 2 years. This can probably be done for under $4,000,000 AAV.
It would be a mistake to pay McLeod that much this year, it will be closer to $1,000,000 on a 1 year deal, cap space is going to be really tight to make impactful moves.
All the rest of the RFA’s will be at $775,000, any more than that is problematic cap-wise. None rate more than that anyways. Philp and Lavoie could make the team, but they won’t be starters unless injury hits.
Bjugstad won’t be back, he’ll get a better deal elsewhere and he proved to be no better than a 4th liner, so these players should be paid under $900 K to make the cap work.
Niemaleinen might net just a 5th, more likely a 6th, but definitely not a 3rd.
Yamamoto will be part of a bigger deal, possibly for EK65.
Campbell is better than Lyon and he had sorted out his equipment woes and his game in April. He was a top 3 goaltender from April onwards. Woodcroft’s biggest mistake in the playoffs was not starting him in Game 6. Campbell is not going anywhere.
Also, never make trades on here with Detroit, their fans are probably the most passionate (and unreasonable) on this site, lol.

The scouting reports on his actual skill set is meh, but the kid has so much heart and hustle that he just might have a chance….
That’s the thing with prospects, if you are a draft pick, someone is very high on you. If you get signed, then several in the organization are high on you. Just remember he is a 4th rounder (I think), teams tend to value 1,2,3 rounders more, so he is exactly the type of player that could be traded in such a deal. It is far from a guaranteed that he will ever become an NHL player .
But he is definitely impressing hockey people on some level.

I don't think Edmonton is the right destination for Karlsson.</div></div>
Karlsson will end up moving, because he is serious about winning and this off-season will offer the best opportunity for Grier to off-load him. Honestly though, don’t have high expectations on the return.
Frank Seravalli was all over this in January, the point in him moving, from a SJ Management standpoint is to get rid of his massive cap hit, in case he becomes a shadow of the player he is and any kind of value is gone in a trade.
Where do you think he would fit best?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>glarson17</b></div><div>Big no thanks from San Jose. Whole lot of retention and cap coming back and they are giving up good prospects</div></div>
Regarding retention, why did they retain on Burns? The same concept is at play here.
Regarding prospects, one is a low-scoring 4th rounder, the other is an under-sized 7th rounder. Each are currently more suspect than prospect and every single player coming to SJ in this transaction are at least 3rd rounders or lower. Worries about a 4th and 7th round long-shots becoming good NHL players are bad for business in this league.
This is a very generous deal for the Sharks, for reference see the Brent Burns trade.

It all depends on Karlsson, he holds all the cards here.
Broberg is a non-starter and I realize that none of these guys are Steven Lorenz or Eetu Makiniemi, but they will have to do in a pinch..

I guess Edmonton didn’t win this trade, huh?
And if Ekholm is the piece that pushed them into the Finals they still lost the trade.

Same as it always is, teams jump the gun on signing a player to a long-term expensive deal. The difference here is, he hasn’t played a shift for the team yet.
Not a wise move by Lou, but he may have a contingency plan (a few interested teams) who are willing to do a deal at the draft before any sort of NMC or NTC kicks in.

Lou crushed it. I am shocked that this was the best deal on the table, doesn’t seem like a veteran GM was on the Vancouver side.
To me this is like the Hall for Larsson trade, an underwhelming return for excellent player.

If you cant score with the 2 best players in the world you probably are not going to flourish somewhere else.</div></div>
So true, it is so easy to rack up the points with Draisaitl and McDavid.
There is no way that the Finnish GM of CBJ would take that kind of massive risk during a lost season to experiment with reuniting Puljujarvi and Laine. It would be sheer lunacy to throw a away a valuable 5th rounder AND a 4th round pick in case these guys someday make it to the NHL or to use in a trade for a valuable vet 4th liner.
Besides, Puljujarvi, who has never shown any talent on NHL ice, ever (except sometimes last year, but that was last year, so it doesn’t matter) is worse than most players in Columbus, including all the AHL call-ups.
Besides, a change of scenery for underperforming former first round picks never works out, so why should I even be wasting my time replying to people who think like you?
You know that I am completely out to lunch and that you are right:

This player still has value, just not 1st or 2nd round value.
If you think a 24 year old 6’4” defensively responsible 4th overall pick who can skate is not worth a 5th rounder and a 4th rounder, that is your own myth to believe.

Giving up too many picks (plus Bourgault!) in the Nashville trade. At that cost there should be close to 50% retention on Ekholm.
