Cat and keep Wahlstrom
I dig this as an isles fan but send ishakov back down. Now you have $2m in cap. Move engvall to LW. Sign or trade for a cheap 3c… maybe Seattle could send us a 3c back in the trade for palmieri, if we offer a pick too…

I think San Jose could do something like that for sure.

My Preferred Lines for Game 1
While agree Bolduc has looked a little shaky the last couple of games, Wotherspoon hasn't played since January. I can't see him drawing a spot in the lineup for Game 1. If Bolduc doesn't play well tonight, maybe there's a change for Game 2.

Romanov is injured. He just started skating on his own last week though, so hopefully close to a return.

Selling for Futures
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawkisles</b></div><div>I feel like I’m in the minority of Isles fans here, but this isn’t a hard pass for me. For me, it’d depend on whether or not Tarasenko is willing to extend at a reasonable price. If he comes extended anywhere around 6m aav, I’d do this trade. Bailey’s contract isn’t worth his production, and giving up a 1st and a 2nd to switch out a bad contract for a good one (Odelius is behind an LHD logjam and Newkirk is a depth prospect for sure) is worth it to me.
Now, my guess is Tarasenko does NOT extend at that low of a price (though given his age and injury history, that’s what I think he’d be worth), so without that favorable extension, I don’t do this deal. But I do think there’s something to this deal.</div></div>
I'd rather keep Odelus and swap in Salo, but I don't really see the need for Leivo and I'm not a big fan of sending out *another* 1st round pick. It's the type of trade where I'd roll my eyes and go "predictable Lou" but if VT would be open to signing a shorter-term, higher AAV contract that doesn't kill the cap I don't think I'd lose sleep over it.

anytime anyone proposes a Vrana trade you pop in with these frankly ridiculous "counters" - like, I get valuing a guy as a potential bounce-back and not wanting to sell low, but you *do* realize that Vrana is currently damaged goods on the trade market, right?

Barzal is gonna play on the wing I think

I wish I could tell you with certainty. However, Salo and Aho are already at the NHL level I believe. We need a guy to develop as opposed to that. We don’t have any room for a guy that’s already at the NHL level. We have Leddy, Krug and Rosen signed for next season along with Scandella and Mikkola as a UFA upcoming. I don’t see a route to trading Krug, Leddy or Acandella so unfortunately I would guess no

Puljujarvi would be free if you take him. First team that takes him back in a trade gets JP.

You can add Domi and Athanasiou to this at minimum IMO. Both played with Horvat in juniors and could round out a line with him/Barzal</div></div>
Nyquist is projected to be back a couple weeks before playoffs apparently now. Seems he may be traded for conditional picks based on how many playoff games he appears in.

Would imagine the ask for Barbashev is a 23 2nd and some add on like a 24/253rd or a B/C prospect. Who the prospect could be is a wild guess. Hard to feel gauges of middle prospects

Though if I’m wearing and the Isles can pull this off, no complaints here. I know St. Louis fans will object, especially after seeing what Horvat got.</div></div>
I think the similarities between Horvat and Tarasenko end at they are both UFAs this year. Horvat is younger, healthier, and plays a premium position. He also had zero trade protection which allowed VAN to shop offers for what they thought was the best return. Tarasenko has a full NTC and everything else I just mentioned going against him. I think this trade is pretty fair for STL if they are landing Wahlstrom as the centerpiece. Tarasenko's return should rightfully be less than Horvat's

Horvat I guess
I do agree with you on that - even if you discount this year as being an outlier with his crazy shooting %, Horvat *is* a good player, by all accounts a great dude, and getting a guy who scores goals and is good on the power play addresses the biggest issue that the team had.
But yeah - even after a couple nice wins the team is still on the outside of the playoff picture, their prospect pool is in the bottom quarter of the league, and I don't know if this is the move that gets them over the hump. I'll happily eat all the crow possible if they make the run in the last third of the season, but it's going to take a big turnaround going forward.

I'd throw Mayfield in the "should be traded" pile with Parise & Varly - he's a pending UFA who shouldn't be resigned but his archetype has value amongst the GMs of this league.
