I think that you and my esteemed friend <a href="/users/Heinzey" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Heinzey</a> are in the right ballpark.
I'm guessing McTavish - Strome - Killorn and Vatrano - Lundestrom - Jones.
I'd like to add a veteran defenseman on each side.
Thanks for taking an interest in our team!

In a vacuum I’d rather have Boeser out of the two players, but Strome can be a very capable 3C with some talent on his wings. Shaves a bit of cap space as well.

So Pat Verbeek is eating $16,000,000 on Erik Karlsson for a lousy 3rd and 7th round pick. :laugh You can't be serious? It would cost you at least multiple 1st round picks to each that much cap.

The question of how much it costs to dump salary made me look for comparables.
One relevant trade I found was when Marleau was traded from Toronto to Carolina before the 2019 season. He was subsequently bought out by Carolina.
To get rid of Marleau's 6.25M cap hit for 1 year, it cost a 1st and a 7th. So for any team to retain $4Mx4 (16M total), I think the equivalent value is ~2.5 1st round picks.

All this seems reasonable. I assume Olofsson will cost more to aquire, but things get weird in the off season. So who knows. Yamamato seems like a good gamble for Anaheim. But I can see a scenario where they actually get him for free, based on Edmontons cap situation.
I want to say Troy Terry gets a little less money on his contract and Zegras gets more.
But overall this is the type of direction I think they should go.
I do think this is still a bottom 5-10 team. But they are very much on the right path long term.

Not saying that we don't need the guys right now, but it doesn't seem like the right move to not leave any space open in the future.</div></div>
Fowler is going to be 34 at the end of his deal, I assume he won't be extended, so that leaves 3, two RHD and one LHD, two of which are defensive types. Gavrikov Drysdale would be our top line, one of the young LHD with Dumba, another young LHD with Helleson on third pairing.
Not all the guys are going to work out at the NHL level either, that's the nature of prospects, we probably trade one of the LHD in a package for a top 6 winger too.

He's right shot and a defensive specialist, it was an off the wall idea from way back. Would it really be worse than another season of Shattenkirk?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Heinzey</b></div><div>I think we see Lacombe-Helleson as the 3rd line of D. All for signing 1-2 veteran defenseman UFAs but not more than that or there won't be opportunities for the young guys to get some ice time. Hesitant to even sign more than 1 UFA to more than 2 years, we have too many young defenseman coming up and not enough space. Benoit and Vaaks can fills the roles this year. Love that Vaaks is already on IR in this roster though lol. </div></div>
LaCombe is the only one who is maybe ready, Helleson and the others are going to need more time to develop in the AHL.
Right side top 4 D is a long term need, we have no problems signing long term there. Drysdale and Fowler historically have gotten completely caved in, we need a defensively responsible partner to clear the crease out for both Fowler and Drysdale.
Mints has the size, but his defensive abilities have been noted as suspect for a while now, he needs a lot of work in his own zone. I think we're going to need a defensive partner for Drysdale long term, and I'm not sure how fast Hinds will be ready.

McT is too good to be on the third line, throw him on the line with Bedard to reunite them and shift down the LWs. Don't re-sign Comtois imo.
Plug McScrub is a very underrated player. Might be the signing of the offseason.</div></div>
My thoughts being McTavish is likely the best defensively of the three centers, and this means we have three scoring lines and a shutdown line, we don't have a singular super line to be target by shutdown matchups. Could use another guy there, this sort of assumes our internal options work out as I hope.
HockeyViz tells me that Comtois when paired with Zegras is actually good, at least in terms of xGf/xGa, he is the sandpaper and netfront greasy goal guy for that line.
If things get dire, the coach can always get out the blender and put together super lines to get it done.
Plug is 100% going to be the steal of the off-season, guys an absolute beast. I heard he went through the glass once in junior just to get at a fan who was chirping him, what an animal.

2023 Offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Heinzey</b></div><div>Totally understand and fair point. I just think we shouldn't fill out our defense with no room for those guys to get called up and start having some exposure. Helleson especially has spent long enough in San Diego.</div></div>
Helleson has only been in the AHL for a season, and the first half was rough for him, he was having a difficult time adjusting to the pace of play and wasn't taking that next step. He is still waivers eligible for 2 or 3 more seasons as well, so I think one more year in the AHL, gets a couple of NHL games as the RHD injury call up is the best path forward for his development. Plus, as a RHD, he will be playing with one of his future line mates in Zellweger/LaCombe/Mintyukov down in San Diego.
My personal take on our defense situation is to sign Dumba to a 5x5 for 1RD, get a LHD from a cap strapped team for a year or two left on their deal (Forbort or Reilly from Boston come to mind) for 2LD, and bring Shattenkirk back for 1-2 season for 3RD. Keep Fowler, Drysdale, and Benoit as the full timers, and I don't really care who is the normal 7th man, maybe its White, maybe its Vaakainen, maybe its Juolevi.
1RD: Other than Helleson, we have no RHD even close to ready, we need a top 4 RHD for 3-5 years, my pick is Dumba, great in the locker room, very much a Verbeek style player, I frankly don't care that he doesn't score anymore, his defensive game has gotten better every year, and he will throw the big hit or throw down for his team mates. Like the tiny ball of hate, win or loose, he will get a piece of you when you play against him.
2LD: Forbort/Reilly/Whoever for Drysdale also needs to be at minimum complementary to offensive D, or just an outright defense first player. Teams will still be cap strapped the next couple of seasons, there will be decent defensemen available for loose change from teams that need to clear out cap. Defense first LHD are plentiful enough in the league.
3RD: We have a lot of LD rookies who will be getting sheltered minutes in the next season or two, Shattenkirk is a good enough all around D for 3rd pairing and rookie watch duty. I also believe Shatty and Benoit are adequate as a 3rd pairing, and Benoit could use some more tutelage under someone not Klingberg to round out his game. The kids will get plenty of call ups over the next season or two, and having a competent chaperone for them on 3rd pairing will be important for their development. He is also great in the locker room, the team loves him.

Helleson *might* be ready to go. Other than LaCombe having a few games at end of season, none of the LHD guys have played any pro hockey yet, so the assumption is they will all spend at least a year in the AHL.
We also have to keep in mind that Drysdale is still only 20 years old, and lost a year to develop with the injury, he needs a veteran hand to guide him. Benoit is still fairly green, Vaakainen is also young and not very NHL experienced.

2023 Offseason
Well, here's some constructive feedback -- I couldn't have done better myself . . . and I have a high opinion of my own talents.
I differ with you on some items, but both your ideas and mine are equally defensible. I think that Severson is a little rich for our blood, and I wouldn't give him so much term (I'd be looking at Scott Mayfield on one side and Ryan Graves on the other), but Severson would certainly help that side.
Thanks for a nice effort.

I think you are spot on with your assumptions, we will probably have no offseason trades unless its acquiring a defenseman on the cheap from a cap strapped team (looking at you Boston). Sure as hell need to shore up the defense tough.
Everything up front looks tidy, might change up the lines a bit, would also prefer to play the safe route with the draft pick and do what we did with McTavish in his draft +1 year or if Fantilli give him a year in the AHL before the big call up.
Unfortunately for Stolarz, we burned too many games on Dostal's contract. We could send him back to the AHL but his waivers status is going to run out soon. I am also not sure there is anything more for him to prove in the A, though there is an argument to be made for him still getting starting reps down there in front of Clang, I wouldn't be opposed to the idea, especially if we dangle Stolarz as trade bait at the TDL, we could retain him down to 750k and if he has a strong season could get a mid round pick for him.
I have some differing opinions on the Defensive side of things. I think Vaakainen has run out of runway with us to be 3RD, I think Benoit has developed better (Vaaks has talent, I could see it during the season, but the guy just can't stay healthy, I really had high hopes for him). Orlov would be a great get for Drysdale, but I am unsure how to attract him on a 3 year salary, I'd imagine he wants his lockup deal. On the right, my personal preference in Dumba over Severson. Severson is great, but I feel like Dumba is a better fit for the locker room. Verbeek is looking for players that played like he did back in the day, win or loose, Verbeek got a piece of you when you were on the ice against him. I believe Dumba embodies that spirit. Holl is fine for the third pairing, I also wouldn't be opposed to another season of Shattenkirk either, if nothing else, Shattenkirk provides some continuity for a blue line that is sure to see some turnover.
Excellent assessment overall.
