<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SuprDave45</b></div><div>...That says it all! The point of bringing up 2015 is that it's been a minute since this guy was drafted. If he were progressing as a high level prospect, he'd have played in the NHL by now on a team like Colorado who has been in rebuild for a while...he has not. Having two NHL caliber Dmen on the right side would be the perfect opportunity to work in a rookie on the third pair to protect his minutes. The fact that this hasn't been done means he's below the caliber of player(s) its going to take to get EK...period!</div></div>

If you actually knew the reason he hasnt played its because he is not the type of dman to have on your 3rd pair, and especially not for the Avs. Avs have enough offensive minded dmen in their lineup and needed some grit and straight shutdown dmen. Is meloche ready for top 4? Not at all. But he 100% could of played 3rd pair sheltered minutes. The fact is he was not the type of player the avs needed at any point once they brought in girard, and nemeth started putting up points and we had Barrie tearing it up for the offensive side of our defense, and EJ got injured as our best defending defenseman.. we needed a shutdown guy. Hense why duncan siemens and mark Alt were used over meloche. IM NOT AT ALL SAYING MELOCHE IS A GREAT PROSPECT OR THAT THIS TRADE MAKES ANY SENSE FOR OTTAWA . Lets make that clear. All im saying is Meloche might have more to offer than you think.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SuprDave45</b></div><div>Can you explain the logic behind why Colorado has all the leverage in this deal? What is to stop Ottawa to offering EK to the entire rest of the league, because pretty much every team in the league could beat this offer. And why do you keep saying they are desperate for their 1st like that is exclusive to Colorado?...their going to get at least one in just about any trade they make for EK.

Nicolas Meloche was drafted in the 2nd round in 2015... and has yet to crack Colorado's totally stacked lineup...that tells me all I need to know about his progress as a prospect. So a meh prospect, one 1st rounder and some other random picks? Every team in the league would jump in front of you with a better offer.</div></div>

Meloche isnt a great prospect but "not cracked the stacker colorado line up"? Dude Erik Johnson and Tyson Barrie are their #1 and 2 dman on the RH side.. both very good defensemen, a very very small amount of defenseman from 2015 draft till now would replace them.. and Avs are paying other guys to fill the 6/7 dman roles rather than forcing Meloche to play 3rd pair for no apparent reason.. but i do agree the offer is weak from the Avs. I would probably switch the 6th round pick for AJ Greer and throw in another 2nd rounder. but aside from that the reason Avs have a big bargaining chip with Ottawas 1st is because if ottawa trades Karlsson they are pretty much guarenteed to be a top 5 pick in the draft.. thats worth a lot especially with jack hughes a possibility. Sure they can get other 1st rounders but will it be as high of a pick as ottawas? Idk

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJH</b></div><div>If you are talking about the 6/7 defensemen they dressed for the most part last year (Rielly, Zaitsev, Gardiner, Hainsey, Dermott, Carick, Polak) I'd agree with you. But that is not what I said. I said they have the defensemen they need in their pipeline already. Out of those 7, I'd expect only 3 to have their name on the Cup. Rielly, Zaitsev, and Dermott.

Before you go off on Zaitsev, keep the following in mind. He played well in his first year and not so well in his second so it's not like he has an established track record in the NHL one way or the other. However, his second year was the first year of a deal that more than quadrupled his salary (you try having that happen to you and even at a subconscious level have it not effect how hard you push yourself initially), he was skating on one leg for about half the year (he missed 22 games, but dude he broke his ankle, they never come back 100% overnight?) and if I'm not mistaken, to top it off, his wife had their first child which has to do wonders for sleep deprivation. I expect his third and following years to be much more in line with his rookie year than his sophomore campaign.

As for the other three slots, I'd expect to see Igor Ozhiganov, Calle Rosen, Andreas Borgman, Timothy Liljegrin, Andrew Nielsen, Jesper Lindgren, Rasmus Sandin, J.D. Greenway, and Sean Durzi, compete for those in roughly that chronological order. In the end none of those would surprise me but my feeling is the two of the other three blueliners will end up being Sandin and Liljegrin with the inside track on the third job going to Lindgren or Durzi (they are both right shots). All that forward depth you've seen cresting the horizon for the past three years from the Marlies (so Brown, Kapanen, Nylander, Johnsson, soon to be joined by Grunnstrom, Engvall, Brooks, Bracco), is about to be followed by a wave of defensemen. There is a reason why the just won the Calder Cup and The Hockey News rated them the top pipeline in the NHL this year.</div></div>

Yeah i thought you meant the 6/7 defenders they currently have. I dont see too much promise in any of their defenders to be great except Liljegren and Sandin. Maybe borgman. The rest are most likely 7th dmen. Could be wrong time will tell but thats where I see them.
I Also agree zaitsev is good and will grow in the Leafs well hopefully. I dont see him as a pure #2 though. Maybe if Rielly gets better he can help balance that out to be a real dangerous top pair but for now thats a pretty mediocre top pair when you are running for a Cup. And with Gardiner and Dermott to fill the 2nd pair with nobody to step in if any of them get hurt their depth for a Cup run is very slim. I guess looking more so at the depth they would probably rather give Liljegren or Sandin along with Kadri. rather than trade Dermott.

Thread: 2019 v1
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>Hall for Larson. Need I say more? I think Chairelli schooled everyone on how trading an elite young offensive player for a middle of the ground defencemen is a recipe for disaster. Yes Nylander isn't Hall, but Barrie isn't of higher value than Larson. Would TO trade Nylander for Larson? I doubt it, the benefits of having Nylander in the lineup compared to Barrie are likely a negative trade off. Nylander will score 80+ a year more than once in his career. Barrie's best years have likely already happened. Never trade a 22 year old elite offensive guy for something they can arguably get equal value as from their farm team.

Dubas would hang up the phone as soon as you say Barrie for Nylander. Then you said we'll throw in a second, I'd hang up again. Only thing that would make me move Nylander is if you grossly overpay for him. Otherwise it doesn't make sense to trade him.</div></div>

So lets look at the numbers..
Barrie is a much different type of defenseman than Adam Larsson. That trade is not even comparable. Show me the max pts Larsson has ever put up and it wont come close to Barries average pts output. Barrie is a pt scoring dman and a proven one. If your big argument is barrie and Larsson are the same "midgrade dman" you are sorely wrong on that one. The Hall for Larsson trade was a joke and everyone clearly knew how that was going to end.
Im not saying this above trade is the perfect trade but you have to look at the fact that you just got John Tavares..
This trade actually makes a lot of sense now more than ever for both teams. Toronto needs Barrie a lot more than they need Nylander, and with Avalanche having Timmins and Makar and Girard they can afford to lose Barrie.
Toronto with Barrie makes their defense actually worth noting when an opposing team looks at their lineup. Nylander is great but you wont miss him now that you have Tavares. AND Barrie will put up similar numbers to what Nylander has been putting up. Just look at the stats and you will see Barrie is actually a very very good defenseman who is knocked because he isnt a stud defensively. But you can also chalk half that up to the fact colorados defense has been shambles since hes been an Av. Barrie on a high offense output team could easily break his previous career highs.
1 for 1 makes complete sense to me for both teams especially with toronto in Win now Mode.
Or another option would be to add a fwd like Shane Bowers from Avs and a d prospect from toronto to fill a future position hole from this trade if there is doubt.
