Trading O'Reilly with MTL and a big FA Splash

NO WAY would Bergevin ever make this offer. Way over value of O'Reilly. BTW I am a Sabre Season ticket holder.</div></div>
Pfft, people thinking Bergevin is competent. Dude passed on like 8 better players to take a C that can’t even play C. Patch only has 1 year left, Gallagher 3. ROR has 5. MTL gets the best player and an extra year of term, plus a C they desperately covet. Good deal or no Berg makes that trade all day.

Habs are gonna take a C who had to play wing last year, try him at C for 4-5 years, then trade him to Arizona. Again.

I could see the picks being contingently higher on the cap hit/term for Stone’s contract.

I don’t see Minny wanting those players. But it would be nice. I do think Coyle is another guy they’re not happy with.

I could see the Pens getting a better pick, prospects, etc, but anything else isn’t going on the roster by next season.

All your UFAs will cost more than that, but you left $5mil so the roster probably stays intact. Not a good enough D or G situation to compete.

Was saying Domi refusing to sign in Arizona and thus lowering his trade price for Pittsburgh.

Yeah, might need to include a pick to get them to eat Hunwick unless AZ needs to take on salary to hit the floor.
Could also face a situation of Domi refusing to sign.

Karlsson?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Claesson4Norris</b></div><div>you're way off. Pittsburgh can't afford it.</div></div>
Probably true, but I imagine Karlsson’s list as well as the NTC lists for any players going the other way means pretty much nobody can.

One more big add
Yup. Pens had to pay all of 2 months of a 4th liner and 3rd pair defensemen with a goalie prospect and 1st to get an upgrade on their 3rd, 2 prospects, and Brassard.
So I’m sure they’ll pay tons to rent a 3rd pair guy on a trash team and rental winger that has all but promised to re-sign back in VAN if they’re nice to him...

I thought about it but realized there’s not much on D outside some expensive guys, and I wouldn’t pick Kane over my other top-6 guys or pay him that much in the bottom 6.

Erik Karlsson
Actually I think Ottawa would much prefer to take Letang. They’ve shown a willingness to make moves to acquire players with guaranteed contracts specifically to avoid having to negotiate new contracts. Having Letang on a 5 year term means they basically get to keep him until he’s old enough to let walk, as opposed to Karlsson who could demand 2x what Letang makes now.

Philly’s end next year
1. I hate the Canadiens.
2. Over the last 3 seasons Giroux has about 20 more points than Pacioretty, and 30 fewer goals. For half the cap hit. The deal doesn’t result in Philly getting the better player, but the $4mil in cap can get them a much better defense.

Is this a playoff team? Give your opinion.
Playoff team but not a contender. Right side is extrenely weak as is half the defense. The cap increases to Price and Turris mean you’re not getting much better next year either.
Trade assets are probably Brassard (can’t pay a 3C $5mil) and Eaves. Hopefully moving those contracts and shedding MacDonald gives you enough room to get a top 6 RW and a middle pair D.

Penguins Deadline
1. A player’s cap is prorated daily against a team’s salary allotment, with the trade deadline timing a team would be assuming approximately 25% of the remaining ca p hit for the season. In Plekanec’s case this is ~$1.5mil. Assuming 50% retention that’s $750k. The above estimate from Capfriendly indicates an estimated $970k available to the Pens so they have the room to add him.
2-3. Montreal fans grossly overestimate the value of Plekanec on the trade market. Any team looking to acquire him knows he won’t return to them next year, and any trade will likely have a conditional pick based on where he signs as a UFA. Other less talented players have drawn higher picks because a team is expecting the possibility of retaining that asset. Moving Plekanec is also contingent on whether the Rangers or Senators move any of their far more valuable center assets, taking away more likely suitors in San Jose or elsewhere looking for center depth.
Likely deal is a 3rd with a conditional 2nd upgrade based on where Plekanec goes as a UFA.

Vegas perennial contender
I’m sure a $5mil cap bump will push UFA contracts up quite a bit, but on the other end I think a lot of players are going to take lesser annual $ amount deals with more term in exchange for incentives like lockout protections and performance bonuses that aren’t subject to escrow withholding, particularly RFAs.

Vegas Cup run
Sure. Or a 2nd line LW for a 2nd line Center (1st line in MTL) with more points than anyone on MTL, plus a middle pair D & a 1st in a deep draft.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Bergevin got fired for it, but as long as he’s the GM don’t expect quality asset management. Same goes for Ottawa, these aren’t teams known for getting market value for their assets.

Because MTL is stupid
I see Rowney/McKegg alternating the position based on strong-side draws. Rowney is a natural winger so he probably gets moved more often, unless Sully has a “correct side” fetish like Babcock.
