Pre-season evaluation roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AG_sweden</b></div><div>Oh I one hundred percent agree with that statement. I seriously wouldn't mind seeing another tare down. So tired of hearing Zibanejad excuses, and Kreider and Panarin coming with empty words. Problem with Panarin no one takes that contract.</div></div>
Again...getting way ahead of ourselves- but 40-50 games in if that's what this team shows it needs...then let's get on with it.
As far as Zib- I really don't have complaints with his effort or what he brings...but I've heard enough about his DJ pursuits in the off season. I'd like to hear about what he has done to improve his game. Not that there is anything glaringly deficient. But if McDavid could dedicate a summer to- get this- improve his skating (which he did 2-3 years ago), I think Zib can find something in his game to try to improve.
And Panarin- between the NMC and the contract...he's going nowhere unless he relents on his NMC AND NYR eat significant salary. To break him on the NMC matter I'm guessing would rquire banishment to the press box. This isn't happening unless midway through the season the team decides to mail it in and break it down again.

Or hopefully they don't care about preseason results and somehow using these setbacks for strong season showing. But it is noticeable how bad they played.</div></div>
It's way to early to make the assumption that the players are fighting what Lav is trying to implement...but if any of that comes to light, then that player (or players) need to be treated the way ADA was-while the team attempts to remove the malcontent(s)...the way these guys suddenly disappeared after being up 2-0 in series the past 2 years- none of them should have any say in the path NYR are taking to move forward. And if any of these guys don't "like" the path- they better respond to it by giving 100%, as they put in their trade request and waive their movement clauses!

Whether it’s injuries, new system, or chemistry issues….many of the players this team is gonna need a lot from this year have looked anywhere from ho-hum to awful in pre-season so far. Can’t argue with your rankings here.
Gotta give it some time…I mean- any real mystery who the final cuts will be? Let’s just get on with it so that the players that will be here get a chance to play together, develop chemistry, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised if the first 10-15 games are pretty rough.

Very good point
I don't love 11/7 myself....but a few successful teams like TBL have used that...so not much to argue against there, lol.
Just putting Zach Jones in Trouba's spot on PP2 in itself would be a huge improvement!

Gustafsson does look like a good fit...but he's a 31 yo, on a 1 year deal. If Jones is traded for good value- I can deal with that. But he hasn't played up at NHL enough to warrant much more of a return than they would probably burn next year at TDL for a depth Dman who'll be UFA next summer.
I'd rather go with a rotation in which Gustafsson, Schneider, and Jones would all get 60ish games. I'd siphon a few games here and there from Miller and Lindy to make this math work.

Zach Jones has to be on the roster...and the way he has played, at a minimum he deserves to be in a bottom 3 rotation.
If they waive him to HFD, he will be scooped up as soon as he hits the wire.

The 9 game thing is only relevant to enabling an ELC to slide. That wouldn’t apply to Othmann or Cuylle this year…so if either make NYR, they gotta get at least 15 games to see if they can generate any chemistry and gain traction on the team. Unless they show they are clearly not ready for NHL…which hopefully is figured out in TC. Of the two, Cuylle probably has less to gain by starting in HFD.

Kudos to you for having the patience to respond to a troll with an ignorant comment…
In the end, Schmaltz for sure could be a very useful addition to NYR…
But I’ll take my chances with BOTH Kakko and LaF passing his production- if deployed properly the flood gates might just open for LaF- whose production to date has been 99% at 5x5. And as far as Kakko…don’t think he’ll ever be a mega point producer… but what he is capable of along the boards and defensively is a big need every team has. As long as his pay is in line with his value to the team, he’s a keeper.

Overall the team looked good. They forechecked like crazy and held down the neutral zone. They were doubled up on shots by the end of the 2nd period</div></div>
Nothing wrong with Othmann paying his dues. If that's what it takes to make him a better pro player that sticks for good once he gets here- I'm fine with that. I just don't want him to beat feet in TC, show he's ready for NHL, and then be sent down to make room for a washed up has been (other than 13F). Of course NYR would NEVER do that!! lol

Didn't see the game- but from the comments and the highlights sounds like Othmann wasn't overwhelmed, Pitlick could be a very useful 4th liner, and Gustafson impressed.
I would definitely keep Kakko w/ Kreider and Zib. He should compliment those guys well and have a breakout year. Same goes for LaF w/ Panarin and Chytil. If LaF can't find offense with those guys then it becomes clear what they should do with him. I think though he will find lots of offense and wouldn't be surprised if he put up north of 60 pts. And would provide a little grind and D to that line.
As far as 3rd line...all along I've said Othmann should at least start at HFD. But if he does show that he fits with NHL players, a 3rd line with Troch and Wheeler- 2 seasoned professionals might do more for his development than playing at HFD. And maybe on occasion for a game off Vesey can fill in for him with Pitlick then jumping into 4th line duties.

If Zegras were in NY last year- he too would have played behind Zib and Trocheck. And PP2. Not saying I agree with this deployment...but that was the reality under Gallant. Chytil should have been 2C last year, and should have seen more than 20-30 sec each power play. All part of the reason Gallant no longer here.

Since then there have been a horde of Zegras trades every day on this site. Who knows- maybe what was said about Zegras was just posturing...part of the negotiation process. In any case, just like NYR would be crazy to devalue LaF, ANA would be crazy to move on from Zegras unless they received a very generous offer.

yeah...I'd do that too- would probably add to Miller to get it done. Miller (similar to Zegras) has a lot to prove. Sure he does get the points- but his D is at times atrocious, and he is far too reliant on using his reach to poke check. But Miller is a superior athlete who became a Dman late in his development- so (especially in a position where big guys take longer to hit their peak in NHL) his ceiling is still sky high all the while being a top 4 Dman at the moment. In the end, though I have a feeling NYR will have to choose between Lindgren and Miller. Lindgren has his own concerns- but down the line he'll be significantly cheaper than Miller.

If that’s what it would take to get him, that’s a very easy pass. Way too much talent thats relevant now, in the longer term, and in the future for one player- who looks like he may be a budding star in this league….but still has an awful lot to prove beyond the fancy gimmick plays.

Doubt Trouba would waive to any team in Canada. His wife (if not finished) is close to finishing her residency as a MD in NYC. My guess is if they are to leave NY, it will involve a good situation for her- presumably in the US health system. Could be wrong here- but that was a big part of the reason he forced his way out of WPG.

Tampa would be crazy if they didn't try to get Stamkos to waive if offered that return. Yeah- he put up 80 points last year...but he'll be 34 at season end. At some point his production will fall off the cliff. The foolish team that signs up for that-after giving a boatload of high end assets- is the type of team that deserves one Cup every 80 or so years- all while setting up TBL for their next contention window!

Mika, Trocheck, and Chytil down the middle is for sure the most likely scenario going forward. Just sayin though...if they did have the opportunity to pry a young C (like McLeod from EDM or Pinto from OTT), Troch does make some sense at 2RW. Of course these guys wouldn't come cheap- but NYR do have several chips that maybe could get some interest in a deal like this.

Yeah...Kakko needs to be 1RW
But Troch does make a lot of sense as 2RW: adds some D to that line w/ Chytil and Panarin. Can take some draws for Chytil (until he shows vast imorovement at the dot). And his salary fits a whole lot better in top 6 than 3rd line. And keep in mind- Panarin started to show some chemistry with Trocheck last year.
Of course 2 questions remain: who goes to 3LW, and who plays 3C. If the 3C solution would be an in house solution (Goodrow or Wheeler) then I'd probably put Kreider there. If they could pull off a trade for a young, upcoming mid 6 C (I know- good luck here), then I'd put LaF there. Either way- rolling the lines shouldn't affect ice time nor the PP units.

Don't understand why so many aren't looking forward to how guys like Panarin and Trouba respond in a new system, with (supposedly) more accountability and both an offensive and defensive plan. This was Gallant's undoing- as indicated by many players in their exit interviews.
Add to that the effect Muse may have on several young players.

I personally love Goodrow, Trochek, and Trouba it's that money is the issue there. Luckily in Trouba's case, Schneider will be in prime form to slot in his spot once the current deal is up and Goodrow can be easily bought out if nothing else. But Trochek should have never been signed (Drury f***ed over Chytil by doing that) and Panarin definitely should have never been signed.</div></div>
I’m not a fan of Panarin either…but being resigned to the reality that they probably can’t move him, I’d rather focus thoughts on what the new coaching staff can bring to this team in terms of game plan and adjustments. Seemed as though numerous players threw Gallant under the bus in terms of his abilities here. During the season- can get away with it. In series vs same opponent- no way.
So how does Panarin respond? Who knows- but hopefully if the team finds success he’ll buy in, which can hopefully result in more success…we’ll see.
In response to Hockeyboy- I don’t think this team is constructed to win the Cup either. But if Muse can get through to LaF, Chytil, Kakko, Schneider, Othmann, Cuylle, Jones, etc….that really changes everything- and sky is the limit- esp with Shest in net.

For sure Kane can land a bigger contract elsewhere- but signing on the cheap and playing on 2nd line here with Chytil and Panarin could bring some heavy #’s…which could get him another 3 or 4 year monster contract. All while being part of a Cup chase.
