Also, I can't imagine Leafers would be happy sending Kap. Seems like an overpayment.</div></div>
He is a fan favorite but ... the ceiling in Toronto is the 3rd line for him, he hasn't clicked well with either AM or JT, I'd pull the trigger on a trade for some defence if we are serious about a run ... and the leafs can't really afford to not send salary back in any trade ... if you think its an overpayment, maybe take out the 2nd. Ideally .... they should go for Georgiev and Deangelo in NY, but that's gonna cost alot more than just Kapanen .... and those 2 wouldn't be short term fixes .... how much is Dubas willing to surrender?

1) Yes Tavares obviously helped Marner to a career year
2) Marner also helped Tavares to a career year
3) Young players are going to get paid if they are top contributors. Its just the way the market is moving.
4) I agree Marner shouldn't get 11 million, I am hoping for a 6 year deal around 9.5 million
5) Everyone on here either doesn't know or doesn't remember that the year before last Marner played at an above a point a game pace for the second half of the season once he was put on Kadri's line with Marleau.
Marner isn't overrated, his agent is a clown who is overreaching and this whole thing is getting way too much attention.</div></div>
I guess overrated was the wrong word to use, lets say overvalued .... and you're right, 9.5M is more than fair at 6 years.

Not worth 11M trading MitchFlyers
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>First half I'd say is BS. The second half of your statement I'd agree with but in all of those cases its due to players having very undervalued contracts. For instance, who wouldn't rather have McKinnon at his contract over Marner? But since we can't just change rosters as we can on video games, you have to deal with the business side of things. In this case, I've been firm that Ferris is a clown and has over reached in a big way. Now speculation and fan angst has blown all of this way out of proportion and a circus has ensued.</div></div>
The first half is 100% accurate. This kid put up 2 60pts seasons before this and now we're suppose to hand him over a top end contract because JT made him look good for a year .... gtfo

Marner can sign with any team.... The trade. Like Konecky but the Leaf would need a Dman that is truly NHL ready and good. I'd say Sanheim not Myers than it could be a deal, which the Flyers don't probably do unless they Marner signs at about 10m.</div></div>
There is also this illusion in your head that because Toronto doesn't want to go over 10.5 that atomically means other teams aren't willing to go over it. I'm pretty sure Panarin signed for 11.5M.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MTLaveragefan</b></div><div>I'm a habs fan, and I'll admit that he is doing a great job so far! But comes a point where I believe it would be better for the leaf longterm to trade Marner for assets.
Let's face it, Marner is a great player, but his value is greatly inflated because of Tavares.
after signing him... you'll end up maneuvering the cap every summer... and be forced to trade more pieces.
Get a great offer, and work long term with the two great centers you have now. 11M for a winger is way too much.</div></div>
Yeah I see what you mean, this summer is looking good so far for Dubas but next season is another ball game .... they have their forward core locked in so that won't be an issues for 3-4 seasons ... but Rielly is the only Dman locked in next season with Dermott as an RFA ... the good news is they'll have roughly 15-17M in cap space to spend on defence. I don't think it's gonna be an issues going forward TBH ... sure Marner takes up a lot of space but toronto still has a ton of assets up front, and more specifically on the RW. If Kapanen keeps improving, and Bracco pans out I can see them trading Nylander for defensive help/cap relief. Right now Nylanders value is pretty low, I have no doubt he can put up 70+ with a full training camp and starting the season on time ... his value might be pretty high next summer that they could swap him for help ... and re-sign either Barrie or Muzzin.

He didn't play last year, he won't play this year (barring injuries). LOL</div></div>
It doesn't change the fact that he plays on the right side, again, you can't count. And how do you know if they're all left handed? I'm right handed players can shoot either left or right depending on how they grew up playing.

You can't count apparently. And please yes .... the offense remains pretty much the same and the defensive has just vastly improved overall. And if the cap space is a concern of yours Brown can always be dealt.

ZAITSEV TOR - Read description
So Toronto doesn't get cap space .... swaps for a worse defender AND gives up their best forward prospect. I think what goulet said is accurate .... the media and fans in toronto are really piling on to Zaitsev so a point that people think Dubas will have to add a high draft pick/prospect to dump his salary .... the same people are also saying stuff like "We'd be lucky to get a bucket of pucks for Nylander."

I also like how everyone overvalues salary dumps ... realistically, Marleau being on the kings salary cap doesn't effect them whatsoever in the near future. LA could get a couple of mid round picks and be better set for the future .... a move that literally doesn't cost them anything to add assets for their rebuild.

This is the ONLY way the Leafs can get Marleau off their books. I think they would like to re-sign Marner.
This idea is gaining traction because if NYR do not sign Panarin, taking on Marleau's contract is another effective use of their cap.</div></div>
Its an overpayment for a salary dump, the leafs can dump other salaries to keep marner under the cap without losing Kap and their 1st. Not only that, but Marleau has to agree to waive his NMC, and why would he want to relocate hsi family to New York?

C. No reason for the sens to want zaitzev. Not enough assets to justify taking a liability (him & his contract)</div></div>
Not Enough assets? Whats the appropriate amount of assets? I don't think its worth more than a couple of mid round picks. And exactly how is he a liability for a team rebuilding, that has 34M in cap space next year? I mean ... are they planning on loading up this offseason with Karlsson, Duchene, Panarin? As stated above, while the sens are tanking for the next 2-3 years his salary and term become less, and they can flip him at a later date.

A. My bad, I thought Gaborik was done.
B. No, a budget ownership would get to shed some expenses, and get 2 players that can actually play on their roster, and could also be flipped for more assets because ...
C. The sens are def not contending in the next 2-3 years lol.
