Off Season Cap Compliance
Can anyone explain how TML can be $8.8M over the cap - isn't the off season threshold 10% (i.e. $8.35M)?

Are RFAs available in the expansion draft?

Ahhh, makes sense - thanks. Although not sure why Seattle would select a UFA unless they were desperate to have the exclusive negotiating rights for a couple of weeks.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_Habs_fan</b></div><div>No, RFA's and UFA's can be selected as they are still under contract until free agency/draft technically and the team still owns them during the expansion draft</div></div>
According to the NHL web site, "Seattle must choose a minimum of 20 players under contract for the 2021-22 regular season." At the time of the expansion draft both UFAs and RFAs will not be under contract for the 2021-22 season.

My interpretation of the rule is that only players under contract can be selected by Seattle. An RFA does not have a contract, but I see a lot of mock expansion drafts with RFA's selected. Are RFA's available to Seattle in the expansion draft if a Team has not protected them?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>chaserice</b></div><div>This is horrible. Hamilton gets better trades by himself. Carolina also can make enough room to sign him and svech at a fair price
And the salary thing doesn't appeal to carolina as much as leaf fans want it to</div></div>
If they were to resign Hamilton which of Slavin, Skjei, Pesce, Hamiltion will they let Seattle take for nothing? I guess they can protect 4 dmen, but then which of Aho, Staal, Taravainen, Niederreiter, Trochek will they let Seattle take for nothing?
I'm thinking Hamilton will be traded just because he will be expensive to resign - they will keep the other three and go with 7/3/1 for the expansion draft. Perhaps Carolina can get more, I'm not sure but as an equivalent, Justin Faulk on his last year before becoming a UFA was traded for (1) Edmundson (later flipped for a 5th round pick) and (2) a prospect, a good prospect but a prospect nonetheless (Bokk has never played a game in the NHL).
In exchange for Hamilton, Carolina would get (1) their starting goalie in Andersen; (2) a signifiant upgrade on the wing (Johnsson - 0.54 Career PPG vs. Foegele - 0.33 Career PPG); and (3) a young DMan who's played 157 games in the NHL, has a career ATOI of 17 minutes and a career Corsi of 53.2%.
As far as the cash is concerned, I don't know Dundon's finances but I think more cash is always better.

reelkena - are you saying Carolina would prefer the 15th pick, or Toronto would prefer giving up the first over Dermott?

<em>Should read $5.65M.
Carolina - They save $5.65M in cash, they protect Slavin, Skjei and Pesce in Expansion Draft. May not be able to sign Hamiltons as a UFA
Leafs - They get Hamilton to fill RHD</em>

Leafs - Barely Under Cap
I think you over estimate Johnson's upside and the value other teams will place on him. He'll be 25 in November, I could be wrong but I'm guessing we've seen his ceiling. Regardless, $4M+ will not fit under the cap (and the other GM's know this). It's not a matter of "want," it's a matter of "have to." Chicago didn't want to give up Byfuglien for Marty Reasoner or Joey Crab, they had to.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>But you don't trade a good player for an inferior one in the "hope" that the lesser player will suddenly improve. Ritchie's three years show he's about a 15-goal scorer unless he's a very unusual late bloomer. Inflate that 50% (!) because he'd be playing with Mathews or Tavares while Hyman is on the LTIR and he scores maybe 23 goals. Meanwhile, Johnsson scores 20 goals and 43 points in his first full NHL season. I don't think the cap savings for one year (because the pressure will be off in 2020) is worth the difference in talent. To me, this has Martin-Erat-for-Filip-Forsberg written all over it.</div></div>

Paying three players $10M+ doesn't regularly happen, difficult choices have to be made.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Why in the world would Toronto trade Andreas Johnsson, who is on the upswing and hasn't reached his full potential yet, for Nick Ritchie, who has already topped out at his? I get to watch the Ducks 82 times a year and take my word for it -- this trade wouldn't improve the Maple Leafs.</div></div>
Why? Simple - The Leafs have cap issues and Johnson reportedly turned down a $4M offer from the Leafs. The Leafs would have hope/gamble that Ritchie can find his game alongside Matthews.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>John by CapFriendly definition being at the cap with just a roster of 21....is over the cap.</div></div>
Not sure what you're saying, the NHL mandates that teams must have minimum roster size of 20 players and this roster is not over the cap. That said, a roster of 21 players is not ideal and could pose a problem, particularly in the event of injuries, however it can be done. The 21 player roster size is the result of the cap issues the Leafs have; assuming they want to keep as many good players as they can.

The Oilers have made nine 2nd round selections over the last 10 years - their best pick was Anton Lander who played 215 NHL games with 35 points. They should make the trade.
