First off. I was saying the PENGUINS wont wanna pay a guy 2.5 mil to be their backup. That's dumb considering how strapped to the cap they are. As well, as much as MAF wants the return to PIT, he's also made it clear he wants to be a starter still and has no interest in a backup role.
Monahan is for a year, yeah I know, but it's still 6million dollars to a guy who is going to be your 3C when your team is like I mentioned, already strapped to the cap. You'd be better off clearing cap elsewhere and using that cap space to buy someone better in FA.
You said "just switch McGinn and O'Connor" like somehow that is better lmao. DOC is NOT top 9 ready, I'm sorry but he was given a fair shot in the league and he was terrible. I'd sooner use Zohorna. You saying "switch McGinn for O'Connor" is literally a worse alternative lol.
Manson is a good defender? Sure. Yeah. He's fine. But as a replacement for Kris Letang??? No. He's not fine at all. This D core would get shelled. Marino as much as I am a marino truther, is not a top 2 guy hes a top 4 guy. He's not ready to take that spot. This entire D core would be bad.
Rakell a top 9 guy? Holy **** you're dumber than I thought. I mean I'm not saying he's some elite guy or anything but he's for sure a top 6 forward on almost every team. Regardless of his AAV. I mean you put him at 4.2mil I'd have him more like 4.7. Thats not that far off. But you thinking Rak is a top 9 guy is ridiculous lmao...
Lastly. Malkin wont. Flat out. I agree that's what he's worth sure. But last report I heard he's asking for 7.5+
Like I said before. This team would be significantly worse than last year. Look at our roster last year. What was our issue. Depth scoring was the big one. Well look at this team. We have EVEN WORSE depth scoring with this roster, and then you decided if that wasn't bad enough you'd torch our defense as well hahahah. This team would be dog dick. It would struggle to even make the playoffs

Malkin wont come back for that price tag.
Flames dont really need or want pettersson.
Rakell will cost more than that.
MAF at 2.5 mil to be a backup?? Why...
6million dollar 3C...
Manson to replace Letang? Not worth it.
Jeff Carter in your top 6?
Brock McGinn in your top 9?
Overall this team would suck ass. Your talking about this team making "one last run" but I'd question if this team would even make the playoffs...

Rumors today
It was reported that the Pens and Letang are "far apart" by Mark Madden lmaoooo. He's one of the least reliable sports reports in the entire NHL, not just in the Pens media.
He's the same guy who said Hextall intentionally held crosby out of game 6 even though he was ready to go. Then after game 7 Crosby, Sullivan, Hextall, and Burke all claimed that was absolutely false. He is the DEFINITION of a clickbait reporter, and he's a known letang hater. He's literally the type of guy to make a report about letang being far apart to send Pens twitter into a frenzy.
I do not trust a single word he says. My point is. If Freidman says they're 1.25mil apart, and Madden says they're further apart than that. They're 1.25mil apart...

Pittsburgh Offseason June 26th
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SupremeBone</b></div><div>I'm personally lower on Lavoie than many EDM fans so that may influence my take.
I see Lavoie's consistency issues being what keeps him from any kind of impactful career as an NHLer. In my eyes, both he and Savoie are boom-bust snipers that have varying degrees of the same core issues: skating and consistency. By the accounts of people I trust, Savoie has made progress in both in the NCAA while, by my own eye, I haven't see Lavoie make great strides in either dimension. Perhaps the biggest thing in Savoie's favour is his position. The system is pretty devoid of talented LW or L shot scoring Ws (Kane and Holloway) while the same can't be said for R shots (Hyman, Yamamoto, Puljujarvi, Bourgault, Petrov, and arguably Tullio)
It's entirely possible that this could reverse next year after Savoie struggles to transition to the AHL and Lavoie takes off following what is essentially his rookie year but, as of now, I choose to bet on Savoie over Lavoie.</div></div>
Very fair points to be fair. I honestly don't know much about Savoie, I just figured a 4th round prospect and late pick is worth Heinen, from what I can tell most are saying is a 3rd ish in value.

I understand the Tullio arguement. But you'd move Lavoie over Savoie? Was a 2nd round pick only one year earlier. Unless you're just getting them mixed up haha
The Heinen trade was kinda secondary to this roster, just kinda point is Heinen is moved for assets. I just took a stab at a random team to try and gauge his value. Doesn't have to be EDM specifically. Like I said, I see lots of people saying Heinen's RFA rights for a third. That seems to be the market value on him.

Pens reject. I look at it like this.
Marino, Legare, and a 1st is solidish value for Miller with no retention. Maybe a little bit low but close enough...
Then look at the rest of the trade. Zucker and a 2nd for Myers with ONLY 1mil retained???? That's dog****.
If you retained salary on both players then maybe this would be fair value. Or ditched the 2nd all together.

See I look at it like this. He's a very capable middle 6 forward who can sometimes play up to a top 6 forward, with ONE year left on his contract.
Yes he's injury prone, but I think the one year left makes him much more moveable than people are making it out to seem. A team in desperate need of middle 6 players who also has cap space would likely be willing to gamble on Zucker's injury concerns, especially considering its only one year. Will he fetch some huge return? No. But I just dont think you'd need to pay someone to take him off your hands. He's still very effective when playing. A team with no cap space concerns could take him no problem.
I could see us getting a 5th for him straight across, a dumb team would probably even give us a 4th...

Risky
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BestGMBenning</b></div><div>I think it is realistic as well. Could be risky but if Sid doesn’t get injured in a big point of winning in a playoff series, we should be fine. I feel it could possibly be risky because running it back with a team that blew a 3-1 lead sounds like it makes no sense but it feels different with this team. It’s hard not to make excuses but when you got your star player, another top 6 winger, your nhl goalies, and a shut down defencemen out with injuries. It can be hard to win a series. So I’m banking on the health of the line up which really makes it risky</div></div>
Like I said, the only thing I'd change is I would dish Zucker for whatever capital I can get, and then use that 5.5 mil to either spend on ONE top 6 winger, or two middle 6 guys to really flesh out the lineup. Hell. If your comfortable with Heinen as your 2nd line LW you could even use Zucks 5.5 mil to get TWO proven third liners in FA for say 3.5 mil and 2mil respectively. Then you only need ONE of those 5-6 yougn guys I mentioned to "hit". It's a little safer option in my opinion than banking on Zuckers health for what, the third season in a row now? I just feel like Zucker is the same every year. WHEN healthy he's extremely noticeable and dare I say good, but then you look at the production and your like "what? How?" cause his production is low despite passing the eye test. Then you factor in that he's always hurt its like. Ughhhh. For a team that needs cap relief badly, he's my number one option, which sucks cause he's actually a good player.
That being said. Like I said. I can see this as an extremely realistic offseason for us. And i wouldn't be mad at all with it.

First off the Mcdavid thing was sarcasm. Read the room.
Secondly, this makes no sense. Trade your 2x All-Star goalie who is just entering his prime away for Future assets and an average middle 6 winger, when they're a team that is trying to compete now?? There is just no way this trade makes sense for the penguins, even if you added in the first. This is just flat out a bad trade dude...

So the plan is.
Replace Pettersson with POJ.
Rodrigues and Kapanen with some combination of Zohorna/DOC/Nylander/Bjorkvist.
Bank on Zucker's health.
And bank on Heinen repeating his production from last year.
This is exactly what you titled it. Risky. I don't hate it actually...
I think POJ could do what Pettersson does, but I REALLY think we should move Dumo instead.
Im hopeful Heinen could be solid again and I like the price tag for him. To me its not a stretch to think he could repeat what he did last year if you give him 82 games with Geno and Rakell/Rust instead of a mishap of random linemates like last year.
I REALLY think Zohorna needs to see NHL time. I actually like him better than DOC. I think its realistic to think 2 of Poulin, Zohorna, DOC, Nylander, Hallander, Bjorkvist, or hell even Legare could be solid bottom 6 players. You only need 2 of them to hit right.
The thing that REALLY scares me here is Zucker. I do not think his health will hold up. I am not willing to bank on it. I'd rather trade him. Spend his 5.5 mil tag on a better 2nd line LW, and then move Heinen to the 3rd line. Other than that. I actually really like this roster. Its risky but I honestly believe in it, I think its realistic too..

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Haymaker26</b></div><div>I agree with pretty much all of this except for Poulin showing nothing. He could be ready next season, which would be considered his age 21 season. Rust and Guentzel made their debuts in their age 22 seasons, Rust wasn't an NHL regular until 24. Kasperi Kapanen wasn't an NHL regular for Toronto until 22 either, and he was a 22nd OA pick whereas Poulin was 21.
He couldn't play in the AHL until the 2021-22 season because if you don't make the NHL out of training camp, CHL teams will retain your rights when you're under 21 and you can't play in the minors. Despite this, Poulin was 2nd in scoring for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, only behind Valtteri Puustinen. His hockey career is just getting started.</div></div>
Fair enough. EVEN if you consider Poulin a better prospect than I do, I still think Pens would be foolish not to accept this.

Pens instantly say yes to that. We move back a couple spots in the draft? Okay thats basically a wash value wise.
So what are we doing? Zucker and Poulin for Miller retained? I'd do that as a Pens fan...instantly...
You could probably change that FLA first to a 2nd or even a 3rd to make value more fair. Poulin is good sure but he aint like some elite prospect. He's a late 1st rounder whos proven and shown NOTHING in terms of being NHL ready so far. Yes the pens havent given him the chance but he hasnt exactly made it impossible to not play him either...

Off-season

E-Rod, Heinen, Jarnkrok can slot in on any line. Jarnkrok, IMO, is somewhat of an upgrade over Zucker. He’s a combination of both Tanev and ZAR. I feel like he’d fit perfectly with the Pens.
I was also thinking of not signing Letang in favour of Lyubushkin, who’d be much cheaper. Marino, Bear, and Lyubushkin as the righty’s. But the D looks solid as is, last minute choice things lol</div></div>
Yeah like I said I dont even hate the pieces or the team, I like Jarnkrok, I like Bear, I like letting DOC play, I like bringing back Geno, Letang, and Rakell. I just think this team doesn't fit.
If I knew I had Bear, I would move Marino for say a Brock Boeser or JT Miller type player since VAN has been rumoured to love Marino. Obviously that wouldn't be a 1for1 deal but it would be the pieces involved. Then I'd dish McGinn's contract and POSSIBLY one of Dumo/Pettersson and then you have the cap to really upgrade your top 6 without really downgrading your D that much.
You could easily deploy a d core of say Dumo - Letang, Matheson - Bear, Ruhwedl/Friedman/POJ/Lyubushkin/ whoever else you wanna sign. And be fine. Leaving you much more cap space to make your bottom 6 intact and upgrade your top 6. You could get guys like Jarnkrok and Rodrigues to stay in the bottom 6 where they can be solid effective players, and still upgrade your top 6. All while keeping a strong enough D core.
I think this team has potential, its just youd need to make one or two more moves to make it "right" if that makes sense.
