Calgary retools
I have a question for the Flame fan base. Huberdeau has had a tough go in Calgary, and he's signed expensively for the foreseeable future.
Would you see it as an asset in a trade to have Huberdeau leave with Zadorov? Like consider it an asset to just have it off the books? Buyout is expensive for him. Would you consider retention?
For the Leaf's, maybe getting a third team to also take some of the cap, and then Huberdeau 's number is more palatable and he's more around offensive players to help him.

True, nice points.
I did think about not including Bertuzzi because I do think it's a higher price on market value. You're right if Hyman came in he'd probably be a good cap out to still balance it cap and have space for D improvement.
I dunno who id move out. I like Lilly, Sandin, Durzi as long term reasonable hits stick with it patience. All starting to really come into their own. I actually like Reilly's contract(as long as cap goes up as projected) and NMC so doesn't matter anyways. But I think the injury last year really hurt his biggest strength (skating). He seems to be back.
Brodie has always been steady and well worth his deal, but he did stumble in playoffs last year.
Push Gio to 7th Timmons 8 and upgrade 1RD.
Reilly- Upgrade
Brodie-Lilly
Sandin-Durzi
Gio-Timmons???

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HollywoodHudon</b></div><div>Fail to see how THIS version of the Leafs is any better than the current version!
Durzi, Marchment and Jarvis would certainly be nice pieces to have at this time. however - are they BETTER pieces than Tavares and McCabe and Muzzin (no way to predict his injury issues and no way was he a waste the first few years he was here - he was quite the D stud for the Leafs when he was healthy.</div></div>
I think this team would beat the other, personally, but this is something we will obviously never know, but forwards are deeper.
Goalies the same.
D I really don't see as worse than ours currently. Kling is all offense, Durzi and Sandin both have that offense, and I think are better defensively. McCabe has not had a strong start.
And yup, all the respect to Muzzin. Absolute legend and played great for us. Truly gave us everything he had. He plays a rugged game and it definitely took its toll.
However the point of this was to see what we could have looked like if we just took the slow build method. Not forcing expensive trades or pricey UFAs and if that was the philosophy I don't see that trade happening.
We'd also have more draft picks and past ones(now prospects) from the last few years that I didn't bother adding in. Plus the cap space. We'd be in a great spot.

Your point is valid though.
As a side note: the defense and goaltending as always is pretty weak</div></div>
Ouhh Hyman! I did have him and forgot to submit the "trade", him definitely added to first and everyone shuffles. I did think about Kappy, and true. But I already was making cuts on the roster limit.
The defense I view kind of to what we have now, which I think is mostly offensive oriented and not defensive lol. I actually like Durzi quite a bit. Sandman is rounding into his own. You are right though, defense is the weakness. And goalie is obviously identical to what we have currently.

I think he'd get the Simmonds/spezza type treatment. Even though in "minors", still be there and when he is needed they recall. Playoffs cap is no longer relevant and he'll be more rested and you can just play the best 6/7.

It's not so much distain. I made the decision essentially between Gio and Timmons to get compliant. I ultimately decided Timmons due to rfa/age and gio's age. I also thought about Klingberg😂. I am scared of what I've heard of defensively and we could afford spares with him waived and I doubt anyone would claim that contract. I also feel Gio will get the same choice/respect Spezza and Simmonds got.
I wrote out like a line by line thing originally and I don't see it🤔.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>Can Liljegren play 1RD? Is he a good partner for Reilly? Thats a second pairing of UFAs who probably are both gone at the end of the year. Timmins is very weak defensively, but that whole Right defense looks pretty weak defensively for a coach who played defensive RDs Holl and Schenn alot of minutes. The defense looks pretty meh, you've got 18 skaters, and a 4th line that may collectively only put up 20 pts.
Just dont know in a year with this many UFAs on the team that you go in with so little depth, and such a questionable defense, and few picks/prospects/cap space to fix anything.
In camp if Timmins cant play defense, I think you send him down/trade him and roll out giordano and Benoit at 3LD and 7th dman, put brodie back at 1RD, McCabe-Liljegren at 2nd pairing, and then lafferty or jarnkrot have to go. That defense is too suspect especially behind a goalie with so little NHL experience and a Samsonov who through his career has been a tad unreliable.</div></div>
Yeah, I really wish Klingberg money was spent on a better defensive D. I don't fully understand the vision in the mix here without a trade.
Problem I ran into when looking at it, was to have Brodie with Reilly; than you'd have to waive Timmons because you'd need Gio as 3LD.
Klingberg I'm not putting with Reilly, Seems like a lot for Timmons.
I am higher on Lilly than probably most, I don't think it's ideal, but bi think it's the best option available I guess.

Honestly, from a lefty/right mix, I'd kind of like Gio on the team. Would allow Brodie to play with Reilly.
But Timmons would definitely be claimed, and I think it's short sighted to waive him.

These were almost my exact forward lines. I flipped Domi and Bertuzzi.
Domi and Marner have history/chemistry. I want to see a small sample of them together in preseason to see what's there.
I separated Matty and Marner because the other 4 there aren't exactly known for the defensive side of the puck.
Out of all of Trelivings moves, it's the defensive side which has me concerned, the focus was definitely offense. The Klingberg contract is what I'm most nervous about. I haven't heard a single good thing about his defensive game and heard nightmares about it.

That was my thought. Earlier in summer I was thinking he could be a decent add for scoring, but his name alone will make him too expensive for our team without trades... which I still feel Treliving is working on.

But I am.of the school of thought Domi starts the year with Matthews and Marner. We cannot forget what Domi amd Marner did as London Knights - it was rather dynamic. I have to think Keefe will give that a go to see if it cannot be replicated on some level.
But this construct does really have merit. I could see this playing out during the season in certain games and situations.</div></div>
Without a doubt the lines will change throughout the year.
I agree on the Domi/Marner combo, even to just help acclimate Domi in, but they should still have that chemistry.
I just think with who we added, we need to separate Marner and Matty to balance the D side. If Matty, Marner, and Domi are line 1, is Bertuzzi/ Tavares/ Nylander good enough in own zone?
I guess time will tell haha

JT would say no with his NMC. He's going nowhere.
Even after the deal expires, he'll re-sign for whatever Treliving will give him. I think he'll retire a Leaf.

It's not so much about Supplanting Tavares, but more so about trying to create 3 lines that can score and be reasonable in their own end.
When building it I wanted 1 of the 4 higher paid guys lower in the lineup to try and create depth problems for other teams. Out of the 4, Tavares could probably use the extra breath compared to the younger 3. I was also considering Bertuzzi and Domi lower to try and do the same concept with scoring on third.
Longer-term stuff, I'm sure Holmberg will benefit long term from playing alongside JT.
