Scoping Out the Impending Cap Problem
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Yes, this is precisely what I was getting at. Note that I dumped the Callahan salary and that Palat has a NTC. Without those two elements, Tampa wouldn't have such a problem. If Palat decides not to waive, what are you guys going to do? Also, I brought in some serviceable players for less than $1M.</div></div>
It's hard to make a case for anyone waiving their NTC off this Tampa squad, so personally I think they trade Miller (maybe Gourde but he just resigned long term). Callahan also gets traded with an asset. And EK65 signs @ same cap hit as Heddy (7.875m)

Karlsson UFA
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tesau315</b></div><div>Those are some really good articles that all do a great job of explaining how personal income tax works in the NHL.
Jock tax is also on any income earned while playing in said state, so as a signing bonus is a 1-time payment, it would be exempt from Jock taxes.
And yes that is correct. As long as Matthews bonus is used as business income for a Canadian business and not personal income, it would be exempt as it wouldn't be personal income. So, Matthews would pay 15% federal corporate tax rate and a 11.5% provincial corporate tax rate, on his bonus instead of the 15% Canadian tax rate (from the US/Canada tax treaty section on signing bonuses) plus his personal Fed/State taxes, if he took it as personal income. So he pays 26.5% taxes in Canada only, instead of 15% in Canada and the 43.6% tax he would pay in the US (Federal+State). That only applies to his bonus though.
His normal wages are still subject to all US Fed/State/Jock taxes, but cannot be taxed in Canada, according to the tax treaty, since he is a US resident. I thought players still paid individual income tax to each state/province they played in. So I was wrong when I mentioned that before. I learned something new today.</div></div>
Right, aside from the teams that don't abide by the tax treaty.
But overall I'm still confused, does this mean that gavin tax calculator is the accurate post tax earnings?

Like I said if he resigns @ 2m or less x 3 years, I'd pull the trigger I guess. Cally has to go one way or the other. I'd do Katchouk & 5.8m Cally straight up. Or Pionk & 3rd/4th for Katchouk & 2.9m Cally.

In no way do I mean to be rude here; I am not trying to be obnoxious when I ask this. Do me a favor and try to put yourself in another person's shoes who does not root for the Lightning. Would you take on Callahan, who has been a fourth liner for the past two seasons, at $2.9 million, knowing that the team he's coming from is desperate to move any bit of his salary, for a fourth round pick, while also giving up an NHL caliber defenseman? I just have a hard time seeing a GM accept that trade, but we can agree to disagree.</div></div>
I wasn't talking including the unknown cost effective dman (a name would be easier for me to give you a theoretical trade). But yes I think a non playoff team would take Callahan's 1 yr 2.9m for a free 3rd-4th rd pick.

Depends on which "cost effective defenseman" is in question. If we're retaining half of Cally's hit, then expect half of his full value being traded with him. If Cally half retained, add a 3rd-4th. If Cally un-retained, add a 2nd / Katchouk.

We will agree to disagree.</div></div>
Yes we will agree to disagree. I've heard a bunch of people compare point to Marner & Nylander if we're comparing career ppg. But looking at this season, Point has the same ppg as Marner & even more than Matthews, plus he's averaging the same goals per game as Matthews. This off-season will be interesting, but ultimately the biggest factor is going to be if Tampa wins the cup or not. And if they do, you can expect team friendly deals.

Why no love for Killorn or Miller
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jasalex</b></div><div>I have never been a fan of Paquette until this year. In the past he would play 10 minutes, take two minutes of penalties and no goals. This year night and day and yes we need to resign him.</div></div>
I agree completely. He's been extremely effective this year.
As for Killorn/Johnson/Palat/Miller/Gourde, I'm trading Killorn + Palat first. Killorn's an easy decision, if you compare career stats for all active TBL fwds, you'll find a near identical ppg for Johnson/Miller/Palat/Gourde (0.65 , 0.66 , 0.68 , 0.68)... But Killorn's in his on category @ 0.51 ppg.
If you compare total stats from both this year and last year, the gap widens with 0.69 Gourde, 0.68 Miller, 0.61 Johnson, 0.60 Palat (Killer 0.54). It's really preference for Johnson or Palat but IMO Johnson is the clear pick.
In reality, Johnson & Palat have NTC until 2021, but Killorn's becomes modified in 2020. Gourde & McDonagh technically don't have NTC until July 1, but like <a href="/users/BiscuitBakesandHotTaeks" target="_blank">@BiscuitBakesandHotTaeks</a> said, it won't look good for us to trade away a recently signed extension. However, Yzerman signed those extensions, not BriseBois, so if those extensions do get moved I wouldn't be completely shocked. The number's wouldn't be the reason as much as the NTC factor is, that's the big limitation on keeping the core together going forward.

What math are you doing Einstein? lmao, Sergachev was 11 years 6 months on 1/1/2010 & 12 years 6 months on 12/31/2010... And who's plus minus are you talking about?? Sergachev is a strong career plus!!! Risto is an even stronger career MINUS!!! Today Sergy is 20 years 8 months. His career +/- is PLUS @ (+58). When Risto was 20 years 8 months, his career +/- was MINUS @ (-68)... Today it's -159. NEGATIVE 159. That's horrific... last thing we need.
Since 2014-15, statistically out of all active NHL dmen stats since 2014-15, how many of the of top 10 +/- leaders do you think play for Tampa? The answer is 4, and they're all in the top 7, not top 10 (#1 McDonagh @ +106, #3 Hedman @ +84, #4 Stralman @ +80, #7 Girardi @ +63).
Since 2014-15, the top 5 worst +/- ranked: #5 (-72) #4 (-75) #3 (-78) #2 (-90) #1 (-120) ............ Guess who's #1... You guessed it. BIG no thank you.

Who Will Tampa Move to Clear 13 Million in Cap Space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>I'm not making a comparison of what Points contract is worth. I think you misunderstand that. I don't think he's worth McDavid money etc... McDavid and Mathews got paid top 1 and 2 because of who they are not because of their tax bracket. That's my point. McDavid would have pulled that down anywhere he was. FL, TX, Canada it doesn't matter. Because the product is what it is. My point is that the player isn't going to take a pay cut simply due to what the tax rate is. Because they don't care when they are measuring their worth. An 8 million dollar player is an 8 million dollar player. Just like a 30k car is a 30k car. It doesn't really change much between state lines. Neither does a players expectations for the reasons I listed above. What ever Points contract is worth, is what he's going to be looking for. I don't see a player taking less because their is less taxes on it. No one knows what happens in 5 years. They could be paying those taxes and any financial adviser would be doing them a disservice to not be clear with them on that when signing a deal.</div></div>
Again... I understand your reasoning, but history & myself disagree...
What's the difference between McDavid, Matthews, & Point regarding "who they are". What does that even mean? That they were 1st overall picks? I disagree with your car analogy & I don't believe that players are worth the exact same cap hit for every single NHL team. If McDavid was a UFA and Tampa tried signing him, that's a different story. But if we're pretending Tampa drafted him, I strongly believe he would've received a lower cap hit in Tampa. Same thing if we had drafted Matthews. 9 players in the NHL make 10m + cap hit. 0 of the 9 play for teams that don't have state tax (36%). 7 of the 9 play for teams with 46%+ tax rates, 5 of those 7 being 51%+. The 2 last are Kane & Toews who signed after winning their 2nd Cup in 4 years.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tesau315</b></div><div>That article has does a piss-poor job of explaining the situation. Like you posted above, the math is grievously wrong and it just shows how little they actually researched Matthews situation. They do admit that they just took a "quick glance", but if you are writing an article, you should at least do your due diligence and research the topic before hand.
Now back to the signing bonus discussion, the US-Canada tax treaty is only for personal income earned in either country, not for business income. So if Matthews took his respective signing bonus as personal income, then yes, he would pay the 15% in Canada and his respective taxes in the US.</div></div>
So if he tied his income to a business, is it saying he would only pay 15% in CA and be completely exempt from all other taxes? It sounds like there's 3 tax categories: Federal, State, & Jock. Are all 3 effected in the treaty?

"At the other end of the tax spectrum are the two selections that will play in Canada. Jesperi Kotkaniemi, selected by Montreal with the third overall pick is the least lucky of the five picks as he pays not only Canadian and provincial tax, but will also be subjected to US state and city tax as well. Brady Tkachuk selected with the fourth overall selection by Ottawa will net $191,739.15 or 12.61% less over his three-year entry level contract than the selection right after him Barrett Hayton who was drafted by Arizona."

No words to describe it, the energy in the atmosphere at channel side & inside Amalie was insane. Can't even begin to imagine how crazy this year is going to be... I went to game 1 vs the hawks in the final & driving home I just knew that was the game that was going to come back to bite us... 1-0 lead until like 6 min left or something & then chicago scores twice... UGHHH. But I sure hope this is the year... Praying that we stay healthy... They just gotta embrace the moment, play their game, & f*ck sh*t up!
