<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>matulix</b></div><div>So you would rather keep Gourde? I prefer trading away Gourde than Miller...</div></div>

This is why I originally said "Everyone always forgets about the NTCs"...

I can almost promise you that Gourde won't be traded. Reason being is we signed him to a 6 year, 31 mil (@5.167m cap hit), with a NTC until July 1, 2022 when it becomes a modified NTC. Technically his NTC doesn't kick in until July 1st this summer, but signing a player (especially long term) and immediately trading them is not how they do it the NHL. Looks terrible for the franchise and makes other NHL players want to avoid the possibility of ever joining TBL out of fear for themselves signing long term and then getting traded against their wishes. I thought Gourde may be an exception since I believed Yzerman stepped down after the Gourde extension. I was wrong, Yzerman left before his extension.

As far as player comparison, I agree with you on preferring to trade Gourde before Miller. I'm an analytics addict and overall they're both pretty similar players in almost all areas of comparison. Nearly same age (Miller turned 26 today, Gourde turns 28 in December) ; both physical players (Miller clearly the bigger of the two) ; both put up very similar scoring stats ; have near identical cap hits ; etc... But overall there's a couple reasons I prefer keeping Miller.

1. Slightly younger. 2. More height &amp; weight which the fwd lineup is lacking. 3. Modified NTC. Allows us to trade him if we want/need to... not when Miller wants to be traded.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jay27</b></div><div>Something like this may just happen in the offseason, especially if Callahan is willing to waive his nmc for Buffalo. Biggest reason Tampa didn't make a move at the TDL though is you have the best team in the NHL by far up to that point. Brisebois did the best thing he could, nothing. You dont mess with that chemistry.</div></div>

I understand the reasoning behind Tampa's "trade-less" TDL. I wanted Panarin / Stone if the price was right, but at the very least was hoping for a couple depth fwds and dmen... Especially with how cheap they went for on TDL day...

1995-96 Red Wings: 2nd best all time reg season finish (131 pts)... Lost in round 3.
2005-06 Red Wings: 5th best all time reg season finish (124 pts)... Lost in round 1.
1970-71 Bruins: 6th best all time reg season finish (121 pts)... Lost in round 1.
2009-10 Capitals: 7th best all time reg season finish (121 pts)... Lost in round 1.
2015-16 Capitals: 9th best all time reg season finish (120 pts)... Lost in round 2.

Only 8 times has an NHL team won both the President's Trophy &amp; the Stanley Cup in the same year.

I'm not denying how dominant we've been this year, I'm just sharing history and why I'm pissed that we didn't even make a trade for a couple proven NHL experienced depth players. Oh whale, TDL is in the past. Either Tampa wins the cup this year and the boys resign on team friendly deals, but if they get eliminated again this year... Don't be shocked if big changes are made.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMTD</b></div><div>Thanks I see your point. The trade is not one for one, nor was the comparison one for one, so in response to your one for one, I will agree with your evaluation. But if the goal is to find a puck moving RHD and shed some cap, then my comparison is nearly on par with yours "Ristolainen &gt; Sergachev-Callahan" with Callahan substituting for the pick or salary retention. You many want to change the &gt; to an = which is fine with me. So we agree. IMO BriseBois and Betterall were talking. It involved a RHD from Buffalo and Callahan, beyond that it is all speculation. this post is merely a couple of amateurs trying to guess what the professionals were thinking.</div></div>

Yea I've had people tell me that the trade talks were legit &amp; confirmed (still haven't read that claim myself, but I'll believe it).

First off, I'm not accusing of you of saying this directly, but I do not agree that the widely known "fact" that Tampa "needs cap space" is anything that would make other teams "gang up on us", or set crazy high prices to take on Cally's last year @ 5.8m... Why? Because like I said, he's only got a single year left on his deal &amp; if Tampa wants to buy out Cally, his cap hit drops over 3m in 2019-2020 and only has a 1.56m cap hit in 2020-2021. That's it. It's not some crazy / threatening / "franchise cap altering" horror story that'd you'd see if you bought out guys like Milan Lucic, Bobby Ryan, Andrew Ladd, Kyle Okposo, etc.

I certainly think other teams will do the math themselves so they're on the same page, but there's no reason for any team to set their asking price higher than the natural buy out asking price that Tampa is already facing (save 3m in 2019-20 cap space + only shortens 2020-21 TBL cap ceiling by 1.56m). Yfm? And on the flip side, I think there's more than a handful of rebuilding teams that realize our cap issue and would like to snag a free pick/prospect out of our cap space clearing transaction(s). I understand why one would think that all the other teams would "gang up on us", but once they realize that not only is the buyout penalty we're facing a complete "slap on the wrist", but also realize that Tampa is gonna end up with cleared cap, one way or another... Just doesn't make sense why a rebuilding franchise wouldn't enter the bidding to see what free asset can be scored in a Cally dump trade.

I agree the goal (for Tampa) is first and foremost to open some cap space, but I don't think TBL is looking for a RHD unless it's easy to add in the trade. Not with Hedman, Mcdonagh, Sergachev, Cernak, Foote. Sergy is able to both right and left side, so we already have 3 capable RHD for next season. And it's very likely at least one of the following gets resigned: Stralman/Coburn/Girardi... I can also see Rutta and/or Gaunce resigning on a cheap depth deal.

It depends on who you're talking to if you're looking for opinion on value. Personally, I'd rather have 5.8m Cally + 900k Sergy than Risto (with or without the 2m retained). I'd probably reject Risto w/ 2m retained (3.4m) &amp; a 1st rd pick for Callahan &amp; Sergachev. I think extremely high of Sergy, I'll be really upset if we trade him tbh. He had a slow first-half of the year but since then he's been back to his elite status.
