Marner and Kane

I'm not suggesting dumb GMs don't exist, but for the (correct) level of Bananas we all went for the Seth Jones trade. Patrick Kane got a 2nd round pick due to his NMC. I'm NOT suggesting a 2nd is the max. I'm suggesting expect FAR less. At least this way you won't get disappointed.</div></div>
I just want the Leafs to get the cap space at this point. That's a major win in itself. Anything on top of that is a bonus imo.

This delivers Toronto's own pick, which will likely be in the 20s, and two garbage players. You honestly think Chicago would be the only team interested in getting Marner, even for a season?
Leafs can do much better than this trade, but, yes, it won't be a home run deal. Marner controls his destination and the team trading for him knows that.

The Berube Effect
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WN88</b></div><div>I'm saying from Marner's perspective, why would he waive to a place he doesn't want to play, considering he can get the same money from a team he does want to play for in summer 25'?</div></div>
I don't think a lucrative contract is out there for him from a good team that makes the playoffs every year. Jets are unique in that they are a good team, they just got knocked out so they may be willing to make a big trade, and they're willing to overpay because so few free agents sign there.

Pair Scheifele with a star winger, lock up a star, sell tickets. Making a big trade after a disappointing first round loss is a smart idea imo. It keeps fans engaged.

Money talks. If an extension is on the table at 11-12 million, why not? Jets have a good team.

Marner And Keefe For Sullivan And Karlsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Rielly is great, get control of your emotions. He didn't have a good series especially on the power play but no one did. Fire Keefe.
Marner could be traded but I wouldn't unless it's something I feel is fair value. What you have proposed is crap value. You're mad at him and so you irrationally lower his value to appease your feelings. Just let it go. He's a 100 point Selke finalist. He's an elite player.
Get a coach in here who has proven he can get a team to score in the playoffs and then see how it goes. This is a good team, being out coached all the time needs to stop.</div></div>
Rielly has been far from great. Him and Lyubushkin produced the same amount of points in the series. Stop making excuses for mediocre players.
And Marner is not a Selke level player. The last play of the season proved it. He's an 8 million dollar per year player who conned the Leafs brass into taking 3 million more. Good on him for hustling the Leafs. I don't have any hate for the guy. He has accomplished a lot in his career. But he's not worthy of an extension. Trading him for peanuts is the best solution at this point.

Yea, the coach should have removed Rielly and Marner from PP1. He didn't asjust.
Hopefully Keefe, Marner and Rielly are done as Leafs. We have to wait one more year for JT to go.

Marner And Keefe For Sullivan And Karlsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Karlsson is old, his best days are behind him. He's half the player Marner is. I know you are seeing red and logic is gone but take a deep breath an think about it.
Who has scored under Keefe in the playoffs? No one. Apart from 1 round. His system does not work in the playoffs. Hyman under Keefe, doesn't score. Bertuzzi? Nothing. Domi? Same thing. No one does anything with Keefe as the coach. Fire him and then see what happens. Because losing a Marner trade (by a truly dreadful margin in this case) for the sake of making a change to appease fans who can't regulate their emotions....well that's just pure stupidity.
Fire Keefe, I would also like to see Shanahan and Treliving fired. Fire the whole front office and coaching staff</div></div>
We obviously agree on the coach. Every Leafs fan is done with this guy. But we have to be honest and admit the PP underperforming is also a personnel issue. Marner and Rielly were awful. If the Leafs had a 15% PP they would've beaten Boston easily. Getting a new coach is mandatory but so is getting a PP QB.

Marner And Keefe For Sullivan And Karlsson

That one is tough to explain. Karlsson has a lethal shot and great vision. And the Leafs need a right handed point shot. Apart from Montour who is UFA, there aren't that many available. Karlsson could potentially be one of them. Him, Matthews and Nylander would give the PP three legitimate shooting threats.

Trading Marner And JT In The Same Deal Half Retained

I should have clarified that Schmidt would probably bring back a late round pick. Ehlers obviously has more value, but maybe a 1st is too much. I think Rielly Smith got back a 3rd for Vegas. So something like that.

A 2nd, maybe a late 1st if a team is willing to part with it and really likes the player. He has 14 points in 37 playoff games. He's a worse Mitch Marner. And he'll be a rental. I don't think he has a lot of value.

I don't understand what you're aiming for. But if you feel like dumping thise two players cheap, do give the Blues a call first. Please and thank you.</div></div>
The return would be cap space and a couple of picks. That's not cheap. In today's tight cap league, and with the Leafs still so top heavy with Matthews and Nylander on the books, getting cap space is paramount. Ehlers and Schmidt are not worth their current contracts. Ehlers has had only one full season in his last six years. He can't be relied upon. And Schmidt isn't a top 4 defenceman at this point in his career.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Okay, but now I'm more confused. You're gonna trade all four of those players? For what?</div></div>
No, just the roster players with big contracts. The core return in a trade like this are the picks and prospects. Leafs retain money and take back money to make the cap work for the other team. Then they offload the acquired money for late round picks, sort of like what Vancouver did when they traded Beauviller to Chicago for a 5th round pick.
I don't see any team trading for either Marner or JT at their full contracts, so the Leafs have to get creative to maximize the return.

Keeping Marner for another season would set this team and franchise back. The play is to move on, even if it's for a weak return because the cap space will allow the Leafs to be aggressive in free agency and the trade market.

Tkachuk will help Marner. He needs to play with a power forward. Matthews doesn't play aggressive enough. He'll never be a clutch playoff performer but he'll be more useful on a different team.
As for the cap, the Sens have movable contracts.

In no way does this push Ottawa over the top and teams finishing almost bottom 5 in the league shouldn’t be trading multiple 1sts.</div></div>
Ottawa needs to make the playoffs. Marner will help with that next year, the two late 1sts won't.
