Marner Staying

I think they fire Keefe and trade Marner. Those two are necessary changes. JT's contract is not movable so he'll stay until he reaches UFA status next year. And the other big question mark is Rielly. Treliving didn't sign him to his extension, and he's known for getting big defencemen, so a Rielly trade is not out of the realm of possibility. I hate to see him go but the Leafs play better without him.

No, not emotional. I don't think it's wise paying wingers over 10 million. But the Leafs did it and gave the guy a full NTC/NMC. He's likely staying now.

Vegas - Barbashev, Hague or Whitecloud, and Hill. Leafs should target 2 of 3 of those players. Hill has 1 year left and Vegas may decide to move on.
Anaheim is building a great young core, they have young mobile defense, big bodies up front whose style will compliment's Marner like McTavish and Gauthier. They'll be ready to win soon. Marner will fit in there and be a leader on that team point wise.

Leafs need young legs in the bottom six. JT can't skate. He can't move out there. A new coach like Berube will teach Minten and Cowan right, they'll be more ready than Knies was this season.
As for the Vegas cap, they are masters, they will figure it out.

It's not about the money, it's about sending a message to that locker room. It's about going forward with a new Captain.

Buying out JT to turn the page on this era and to give guys like Minten and Cowan icetime on that 3rd line.
And Nylander is the leader of this team. He's the guy who shows up in the playoffs more than the others, including Matthews.

Even if it was after July 1st and TOR paid him. They aren't doing that. That much cap is returning a 1st at the least.</div></div>
Leafs will be doing them a favour by helping them reach the cap floor so the cost won't be as much as it would in season.

retain 50% at the very least if you want to move that, or expect to pay to move that kind of cap space.
It's not all about TOR.</div></div>
You'll be surprised. With the cap going up some teams will want to reach the floor. Leafs can trade JT to Utah, they can retain half, and trade him to Buffalo. Leafs can give Utah a 3rd.

Look at the centers in free agency. Who available will sign for Buffalo that's better than JT? No one. If Buffalo has the cap this trade makes sense for them. If JT fits he can sign a cheap extension. It's close to home so he doesn't have to uproot his family, and Buffalo can be a competitive team as soon as next year.
