[The following comment has been reposted from the Vancouver side of this trade]
I don’t think there’s any way either Vancouver or Minnesota consider this.
On the Vancouver side, they’re giving up the two better players (including Kuzmenko, who specifically chose to sign with Vancouver over anyone else) and receiving two long-term contracts. They’re betting on Boldy developing, but if he plateaus, they’re so screwed.
Minnesota prefers the players with term. The Parise and Suter buyouts have left them crunched, and Petterson’s upcoming contract extension would break their bank.
Overall, it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever seen, but it’s still not going to happen.

Off-season off stasis
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Knuckl3s</b></div><div>Thanks for that, finally someone who can be bothered to come up with a reasonable take regarding the Blue Jackets, the only thing I might quibble with is whether or not Peeke's contract is truly reasonable, even if it's more efficient than Tyler Myers at 6M by a good quarter-mile, not a country mile, but a quarter-mile. Of course we know what a low bar that is</div></div>
Peeke is also overpaid, IMO. He's suited for a 3RD-pair role and probably shouldn't make more than $1.5M, but I always qualify that I'm not a Peeke fan. Some view him as a legit 2RD option who <em>can</em> but shouldn't play on the top pair if there's an injury. That was his role last year, and he ate a ton of minutes. That kind of player arguably has a $2.5M+ value. 3 years isn't too bad, especially since he's young and theoretically getting better.
Myers at $6M is really tough, because of the flat cap. The cap hit difference between him and Peeke is enough for a Boone Jenner or nearly a Beauvillier. That would be tough to swallow hole for a contending team, but shouldn't be a problem at the deadline once things shake out.

I agree Backlund isn't the ideal target but the concept is sound.
I think the biggest risk/reward move the Canucks could reasonably do is trading a winger (Beauvillier or Garland) in a deal for Kuznetsov. That would be betting on talent at a discounted price, but with more risk.

Thoughts on Rick Tocchet
I think his stricter style really fits the team. He brings some good discipline and seems like a pretty good guy overall. We can see the improvement of JT Miller which is nice, but also smaller pieces of the roster like Nils Aman and Conor Garland. Our PK has gotten better and our overall structure as well. I'm happy with him as HC heading into the '23-'24 season.

How do they get compliant
According to Dhaliwal, they don't have to make any moves. Last year they landed at $0 room to start the season. I'm assuming Castonguay has it sorted. Likely means utilizing LTIR with Pearson or Mikheyev in some manner initially. Or something else but we'll see.

going into the season
I don’t see a way we get a 1st for Beauvillier unless he plays at a near PPG pace and is moved at the deadline, which isn’t likely. Also doubt we get anything positive for Pearson

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Thet's a good point. But the Canucks are likely dot finish out of the playoffs with Hronek at 4.4m, now his contract is up next summer, and let's say he gets paid 6m.
Now could they have found a 6m Dman and kept the picks? :That's always the issue when trading picks is the pick going to be cost efficient NHLer on his 1m ELC.?</div></div>
$6M is like a Pesce/Hanifin/Forsling/Skjei type of defenceman. But you make a good point on keeping the picks but not having a 100% chance you sign those guys, or guaranteeing a Hronek with RFA rights for the picks.
Personally I’m fine with the trade, the Canucks want to compete next season, so acquiring Hronek accomplishes that.

No Hronek-calibre defenceman can be had for 4.4M. And the free agent class this year was pretty terrible to spend money on anyways

I think the Canucks are better off with Hronek. We’ve needed a top 4 caliber RHD for years, and he fits into the age of our core with Pettersson and Hughes

I think they are better off with Hronek because of their window. Pelikka is years away from being an impact, upcoming season in SHL, next AHL, and maybe NHL after that.

Actually I am not a fan of the trade.
The RHD position in the NHL is a limited position and not many players to naturally fill it, add in his skating ability, size and wingspan he would be welcomed addition to any cup contending teams 3rd pair at 50% retained.
that's $3M cap hit and $500k actually salary. [Not prorated for the DL]
This is the reason Grier wants him, he sees the 2nd pick return value.

You are out to lunch, an asset worth a pick at the DL and it costs to trade him - No thanks

No thanks, Myers is not washed up, just overpaid.
Retained and trade at the deadline nets a 2/3 pick, why Grier wants him
