The only conceivable reason for acquiring Myers would be to shed cap in the future. Acquiring Garland completely negates that.

If we got Roslovic he should be the 3C with Hoglander and Podkolzin/Beauvillier on the wings

I personally like Blueger a bit more as a natural center right now, Roslovic for me has something to prove if he wants to push Blueger over or down. Beauvillier will be on the top line with Petey and Kuzy, and Di Giussepe did surprisingly well as a 3rd line 3rd cog, so long as he wasn't asked to be anything beyond that

Who is to say Columbus isn't interested in certain lateral moves while they're at it?

Their current RFA situation and obvious need to improve their top 6C situation says so.

Spending more money on a bottom 6 wing option like Garland does nothing to improve the teams future and only creates roadblocks for players that could benefit from a 3rd line role over the next 3 years like Texier, Chinakhov, Voronkov, LDBB, Brindley, or Dumais. It also takes away cap space that they could be spending on their top 6C situation as I said.

Can’t see the jackets taking on cap beyond this year. Garland has negative value to the jackets so he’s pretty much a non starter

I'm one of the few that doesn't mind Garland coming to CBJ, but based on trade value:

Peeke (young, cheap, cost-controlled RD) > Myers (even with retention, not a positive asset)
Roslovic (UFA middle-6 center, overpaid) >> Garland (middle-6 wing with term, also overpaid)

In this deal VAN would still have to add, and maybe significantly. Probably a 2nd?

Columbus will absolutely trade you Peeke and Roslovic, but I'd rather not have cap coming back on future seasons. If you're looking for cap relief, you'd have to pay futures for it, and CBJ need quality over quantity since we already have one of the best prospect pools in the league. A deal might look more like:

to VAN: Peeke, Roslovic ($2M retained)
to CBJ: Myers (unretained, he's only due $1M at this point), 2024 1st

Myers is not a negative asset after bonus is paid. Roslovic is not a positive asset either, and Garland is a much better player than him. You're way out of touch

Jackets aren't deep enough for Garland to block any of those guys

As much as you might not want to believe it, they have a pretty good forward situation for the forseeable future. Gaudreau, Laine, Fantilli, KJ, and Marchenko are locked in as top 6 guys. Today Jenner is the 6th, but if they get another solid top 6C then he gets pushed to a 3rd line role and likely on the wing. Voronkov or Sillinger are the likely 3C of the future and then they've got Texier, Chinakhov, LDBB, Brindley, and Dumais left to fight for the remaining 3W spot. Why would you bring a $5M player into that situation when the internal options have far better potential and are mostly on ELCs?

Because that's literally how Vancouver rolls.

This wasn't an absolute value, it was a relative comparison. Myers is still a slight positive asset, but his age, not-so-good recent play, and AAV (which is still a factor) aren't helping to boost his value. I'm arguing that a 25-year-old RD on a reasonable contract with term coming off a career year is a better asset than a 33-year-old RD with a higher AAV on the decline. That's not an absurd take. You could flip Myers half-retained at the deadline to a contender for a 3rd round pick in all likelihood.

It's a similar argument with Roslovic. In this case, both are overpaid, are about the same age, and score at strikingly similar rates. But Roslovic plays a more valuable position, and even though it's pretty evident Garland is the better player overall, he makes nearly $1M more for 2 more years than Roslovic. It's more valuable to have an expiring "bad" contract at 3C than a lengthy more expensive contract for similar production at 3RW.

Besides, you sent both to a team whose last two needs are RD and middle-6 winger. You'd get better value sending them elsewhere. The only thing that's "way out of touch" is thinking that CBJ would view this as an even swap that somehow fills positional needs.

Fair point, but not all of those guys are gonna pan out, and everybody already knows that Columbus's forward outlook is the least of their worries

Thanks for that, finally someone who can be bothered to come up with a reasonable take regarding the Blue Jackets, the only thing I might quibble with is whether or not Peeke's contract is truly reasonable, even if it's more efficient than Tyler Myers at 6M by a good quarter-mile, not a country mile, but a quarter-mile. Of course we know what a low bar that is

Peeke is also overpaid, IMO. He's suited for a 3RD-pair role and probably shouldn't make more than $1.5M, but I always qualify that I'm not a Peeke fan. Some view him as a legit 2RD option who can but shouldn't play on the top pair if there's an injury. That was his role last year, and he ate a ton of minutes. That kind of player arguably has a $2.5M+ value. 3 years isn't too bad, especially since he's young and theoretically getting better.

Myers at $6M is really tough, because of the flat cap. The cap hit difference between him and Peeke is enough for a Boone Jenner or nearly a Beauvillier. That would be tough to swallow hole for a contending team, but shouldn't be a problem at the deadline once things shake out.
