<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>If Sharks aim for a rebuilding period, I wouldn’t worry too much about R/L, especially for a wing.

I hear you on futures for current players discussion, but I do not think Meier would return a prospect that projects to be as good or better than him. Make a list of the top-25 or so prospects in NHL and you’d be pretty safe to assume none of them are available.

My rough back of envelope list: Power, Hughes, Beniers, Edvinsson, Nemec, Cooley, McTavish, Wright, Sanderson, Slafkovsky, Byfield, Quinn, Holtz, Perfetti, Eklund, Johnston, Guenther, Coronato, Jiricek, Wallstedt, Reichel, Johnson, Savoie, Clarke…(probably forgetting some obvious ones).

Then add in top rookies/young players like Seider, Zegras, Raymond, Jarvis, Lundell, Mercer, Byram, Boldy, Caufield, Knight, Schneider…etc and you can get a pretty long list of untouchable players.

Aim for a return like Minnesota got from Los Angeles for Fiala (Faber and 1st) and it would be realistic.</div></div>

well the hope is he signs long term and we don’t have to bother looking for a trade.
i would expect a better return for Meier than Debrincat or Fiala, but your right not much more.
and when rebuilding you want a bunch of players fighting for spots, but you also have to make sure you have a balanced depth. this is easier to accomplish in trades, in the draft you grab the best available because you never know what you’ll have in 2-3 years when that player is NHL ready.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rob32sjsharks</b></div><div>But hes a LW and the Sharks don't need any more LW or LHS guys.
And the rest of the guys you mentioned we have prospects that are comparable, if you trade a top line 35 goal scoring wing who is only 25 you need a Prospect and a 1st that will change your trajectory.
when trading a guy in his prime for futures the futures have to have the potential to far outweigh the piece you move otherwise it's not worth it.
The team getting the player in his prime is almost guaranteed a level of production where the team getting futures is getting a high upside bet. this works because your giving up production now for future production.
in this case NJD hope is Holtz or Mercer become as good as Meier, but better is a stretch. thats why the 1st is important.</div></div>
