(PIT/MTL/SJS) - Granlund, Rutta, Petry, DeSmith, Légaré, 2024 1st (PIT), 2025 2nd (PIT) for Pitlick, Hoffman for Karlsson, Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd (SJS)
So Pitt traded their bad players for a good player.

I'm not saying he should be fired...he hasn't had the job long enough, but EK has 3 Norris trophies...including the reigning winner. YES, he more offensively minded these days, but Grier did a terrible job maximizing return. He took on THREE cap dumps that alone...probably cost as much (if not more) than the conditional 1st. Josh Bailey...2nd. Zaitsev...2nd&4th as examples.
Also, why not retain 50%??? They're not remotely close to contending...so why not maximize value?
This wasn't a good job at all imo.</div></div>
Yup. No clue what he's galaxy braining, again. Sharks fans for months were asking for multiple 1sts yet this is win?!? Ok yeah sure. The easy play was rentaining max especially with only 1 retention spot left now. This is as confusing as Poile using a retention spot long term for less than 250k on Ekholm. Sit or get off the pot. Grier didnt show much creativity here. This is simply a white flag by the Sharks.

People on a cap site should appreciate what Grier pulled off here.
He got a 1st round pick to dump one of the most difficult contracts in the league, and get almost entirely out of the final two years of it, when his team will be on the upswing. He should not have gotten a 1st round pick here.
Granlund and Rutta are also relatively cheap buyouts next year if they need further cap flexibility at the expense of pushing more cap to the third year.
You also have to frame all of the above with the high probability that Karlsson wanted out. Teams cannot hold on to players forever when that happens. For a rookie GM to pull off what he did is very impressive.</div></div>

EK65 trade to Pittsburgh without retention
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SK101</b></div><div>I think it depends. In this example sharks are taking on some very bad contracts themselves. In fact this move saves the Pens cap for the next two years even without retention. SJS should retain down to 8 and take back petry and they could get a pretty good return</div></div>
It doesn't really save the pens cap tho... they're on the hook for $11.5M AAV for 4 years lol. No one is taking that.

EK65 trade to Pittsburgh without retention
Not one team in the league would take EK at 11.5m for free. I see this with zero disrespect to EK. He is just 33 and has 4 more years left at 11.5m.
At 9.5m cap is where I see teams accepting EK for free.
8.5m I see a team paying for him.
7.5m is where I see a team paying a decent amount for him but nothing outrageous.
50% retention, I think the package would be very nice. But it doesn't sound like San Jose wants to do that (which I think is silly).

Hanifin trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Newtown</b></div><div>He traded 6 first round picks in his five years with the Leafs. The Leafs had 3 picks this year and are missing high picks in each of the next 3 years. Dubas is a clown.</div></div>
There's a price to winning. Leafs are in win now mode 100% they should be trading their picks. Their roster is good enough to win a cup imo, one of the most stacked last year. Pens are 1-2 years away from a rebuild, and while we are still trying to compete I don't think it's smart to trade any 1sts. Unless we look really good at deadline. I think Dubas approach for us is smart.

lowbs
Pretty bad goaltending moves - in my opinion at least. Desmith is as good as Fleury and better than Blackwood. And cheaper than both.
No improvements to the 3rd line really either - which was the biggest issue for this team last season in my eyes.
