Unreal trade all the way around. Pittsburgh sheds some bad contracts and picks up Karlsson without giving up any major assets. Clear win for PIT right now.

I cannot understand this trade for the life of me. I get Pittsburgh wants to compete with their window rapidly closing, but this is going to get bad quick. The money San Jose retained on EK65 is the same amount that Pittsburgh retained on Petry, so thats a wash. The Pens really didnt have to give up a whole bunch, but I just cant see EK65 repeating his 22 / 23 season. Pittsburgh obviously wins in the now, but that contract is going to SUCK in a year or two.

Don't get me wrong, I am excited to watch Karlsson with Crosby, Malkin, and Letang based on nostalgia alone, but I dont think this was good for either team. Especially San Jose lol. Somehow the Habs came out really well here, not sure how Hughes managed to pull that one off

Montreal = Get rid of Hoffman, Get rid of Pitlick, get a 2nd in 2025 + get a decent top 4 option retained, also pick up a decent young AHL player. Honestly they make out the best short term and long term in this trade.
Pittsburgh = Give up a 1st round pick for Karlsson, and a 2nd + Desmith + Petry + Legare. Paid a price to dump salary, but get the best Offensive Defensemen in the NHL for dirt cheap. Short Term W, Long term Yikes
San Jose = Eat salary and give up the best offensive player in the NHL for a top 10 protected pick? Yikes

With all the contract dumps (including Karlsson's terrible deal) this seems pretty fair all around

IMO SJS got fleeced, but I understand how difficult it can be reacquiring a franchise legend like Mike Hoffman.

Wins and loses for every side here. Fair deal all around.

Specifically for SJ the fact only 1.5 is retained is pretty insane. Still got their First, and Hoffman could get a 2nd at the deadline with a decent season. Not a huge haul, but I really didn't like Pitts prospects so I'm not broken up about not getting any of them

Lol anyone that thought we were paying a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to move granlund can take a good look in the mirror. This is an amazing trade for us! Dubai undid all the mess Hextall made. Wow is it nice to have a REAL GM and not a mess of a former Flyer.

Habs dub here.

Hoffman was going to be put on waivers, as was Pitlick
Petry should be much easier to trade now that 25% was retained and that $3M signing bonus was paid by Pittsburgh

Montreal had a lot of leverage considering San José and Pittsburgh couldn’t make the trade alone. Petry needed to leave and he had a 15 team NMC. Regarding Erik Karlsson, the Penguins traded for a ppg defenseman not a 100+ defenseman. Regression is to be expected but he’s been given way better teammates and he’s been able to stay healthy for yet another season. I can see him producing 80+ this season and help them reach playoffs

San José had no leverage. They want to be bad and this trade enables that. Getting a top 2-3 pick is worth a lot more to them than getting a 4-8 selection. They also get 3 potential trade assets if they have a good season which could fetch them a couple of thirds or seconds
