Big trade
I can't imagine the Devils wanting to send Dawson Mercer just for Jeremy Swayman. Mercer is not having a good start to the season, but I can tell you now that doing a 1-for-1 is a steal for Boston. He'll be a great player. I'm not even comfortable with the idea of trading him away

The Devils just signed him to a super duper mega contract. They're not sending him anywhere anytime soon

Buffalo's d-core is looking real nice right now and they'll be the deadliest core in the league soon

This was just about the story. I wouldn't put Mercer and L. Hughes out of the lineup for sure.

Great deal, and if Winnipeg wants to trade him in a few years, I think this will be the contract that a lot of teams will try to buy in if they need a goalie. Winnipeg will get a great return for this contract

Winnipeg should have cut their losses and traded him. I don't think they can win a cup with this group, as much as I'd like to see them win

Finally... and a decent contract, too. But I can't help but think that this holdout was unnecessary from the Ducks side of things

Drafting one position lower
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tintin</b></div><div>I agree, it's completely unfathomable that lineups like these didn't compete for playoff spots between the 2016 - 2021 period.

No team would be the least bit competitive if they had to suffer the goaltending the Devils had to experience in the 21-22 season (especially so when Jack Hughes is out injured half the season and Hamilton plays with a fractured jaw for 25 games or so)..

Every single piece of the Devils "lottery luck" in 2017, 2019 and 2022 has been fully earned by the miserable state Lamoriello left the team in.
As Red Wings fan I'm sure you can sympathize with that given how Holland handled Detroit from 2010 and onward...
Would you please clarify to me how winning the lottery 3 times allowed Fitzgerald to:
- completely reshape the D corps
- develop late round picks like Bratt, Zetterlund, Sharangovich, Bastian and Schmid into key contributors of varying degrees
- flipping picks, prospects and roster players for impact players like Meier, Toffoli, Vanecek, Marino, Graves and Siegenthaler
... and still maintain a top 5 prospect pool in the league.
How does that work exactly?
I mean, what's stopping Yzerman from doing exactly that (as opposed to commiting 26.5m of his cap dollars to elite names such as Vrana, Chiarot, Copp, Compher, Husso and Holl)?</div></div>
That lineup is an absolute war crime

I voted no in the poll, but after looking at it a little more, this isn't ~terrible~. I think giving him that contract after his first full season in the league is very risky. However, the fact that he can be traded in all but two seasons of the contract could be a good thing for Tampa if they ever need to move his contract.

Bad Laf trade for both sides. Rangers would easily decline as he's part of the future. Habs can just offer-sheet him for just one 2nd round pick in compensation to the Rangers if they decide not to match.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pretzelcoatl</b></div><div>If Schmid plays in the NHL this year that contract is wishful thinking imo. If he's in the AHL all year, it's fair.
I don't see Toffoli getting 1x6.5m. Either he plays well enough to get 6.5m and someone offers him a multi-year deal, or he comes in far cheaper than 6.5. Personally I think we let him walk, giving Holtz a permanent top 6 role and Clarke the 3RW spot
I take issue with Hughes on the third pair this year, nevermind next year, but that's minor</div></div>
Fair enough. Toffoli will still be in his early 30s so he'll probably get a multi-year deal. I'm just getting excited about this season. 2nd and 3rd pairings are interchangeable I think. I really hope Holtz can make the jump this year. I think Clarke should get games in the NHL this year too. He's been great in Utica and looks ready

(PIT/MTL/SJS) - Granlund, Rutta, Petry, DeSmith, Légaré, 2024 1st (PIT), 2025 2nd (PIT) for Pitlick, Hoffman for Karlsson, Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd (SJS)
This is giving NBA blockbuster trade that involves Russell Westbrook or Chris Paul
For real though, Pittsburgh wins short-term, and EK's contract won't be a bad buy-out option for the last two years of his contract (EDIT: I made a mistake. This WILL be a bad buyout). I don't expect him to be good for too long. Montreal didn't need Petry but he's not a bad veteran to use to teach the young defensemen. DeSmith is a solid backup goalie too. San Jose just gets rid of a contract so they can be Lackin' for Macklin

In all seriousness, prospects I'd really be excited for are Michkov (obviously), Foerster, Brink, Bonk, Gauthier, Grans, and Bjarnason. Gendron and Ciernik could be massive steals too

That Petry factoid made me chuckle. Still I feel like Karlsson isn't needed. I'd be very hesitant to trade for Karlsson because of his defensive performance and the Pens already have Letang in the Karlsson role
