I think his antics in the IIHF game brought down his earnings tbh

I’ve been thinking this lately as well. Further expectation after a cheap deal. Think they hope he has a good start to the season and could be moved closer to the deadline in one of those overpay for a cheap rfa type situation that we’ve been seeing lately

Honestly Id rather Kasper in the bottom 6 on day 1 and if that means Veleno is expendable or scratched then so be it.

It's hard to call a 30th OA pick a bust, especially if they become a regular NHL player, but I remember his hype. He's been a major disappointment to say the least. Maybe he breaks out this season.

You can't complain about a contract this close to league min where the play is still an RFA at the end.

I’m torn on that. Many have pointed out they want some of the young guys to get top reps in the Ahl and also build chemistry with each other. I particularly buy into that for 2 guys - Mazur and Kasper as I think they’re future linemates on the wings. I also think Veleno has enough to offer and is one of our more physical players. However, I’m with you in really wanting to see Kasper in the big leagues. Torn.

As a Leaf fan, I have always been interested in Veleno.
Leafs who needed centres in Veleno draft year, drafted Sandin at 29, Veleno went at 30. Didn't really in understand the pick at the time. A week later, UFA centre Tavares was signed.

Another one of those low-risk contracts. I hope he can prove himself this season to become at least a 40-point scorer, but I doubt that will happen

It will be interesting to see how the Wings roster comes together/line rushes and defensive pairings. Heck even their depth in net (Reimer/Lyon as backups with Cossa/Augustine as "goalies of the future") gives them options. They will still have a good amount of cap space (and more if they end up moving Fabbri out).

Patrick Kane reunion with DeBrincat if they are battling for a playoff spot?

Not sure they have the high-end talent to make the playoffs as it stands right now but they can be in the mix for a wildcard spot if the D
