Big trade

Description
I don't think Boston is gonna want picks, as they are in win-now mode. Gonna cost a good roster player to get them thinking about moving Swayman.

I want to hear the opinions from both sides and don't be too biased. I can already see the resounding no's from both sides, but when making trades for big players you gotta lose big players, especially if both teams are contenders and don't want picks.

I think the value is close, with two pending RFA's and young studs. NJ needs goaltending and BOS needs offense after losing Bergeron and Krejci. I would really hate to lose Dawson, but its what it may take. We are stacked up top, they are stacked in net.

And to all you Devils fans complaining about all the goalie trades on here, there is a good reason people keep making them. We love Vitek, but to win WE NEED A GOALIE!

Devils fans, Bruins fans, tell me how you feel about this

Why not go for a ullmark or binnington, they are older but both are better and you proably wouldnt have to give up mercer in the process

Because binnington's contract sucks and he's a massive headcase

I think a Mercer-Swayman swap could work but id imagine Boston would need to add a little bit

I agree just based on where goalie values are in today's game

I can't imagine the Devils wanting to send Dawson Mercer just for Jeremy Swayman. Mercer is not having a good start to the season, but I can tell you now that doing a 1-for-1 is a steal for Boston. He'll be a great player. I'm not even comfortable with the idea of trading him away

True but I also think that Swayman is a little bit more of a proven commodity - Mercer is subpar on faceoffs (prior to this season) and his shooting percentage last was pretty high. Slow start to the year with zero points and only 6 shots in 8 games on a loaded Devils team. Its a little concerning for any buyer.

I take issue with two things. First, Mercer is primarily a winger, so faceoffs are a small sample size and not really relevant. Second, he scored 27 goals on 26.4 ixG last year, so his shooting wasn't unsustainably high, it was exactly what you'd expect for an average shooter.

I totally agree that he has been absolutely dreadful to start the year. The eye test and fancies match the lack of points.

I wouldn’t do it unless we had logjam of young wingers and total mess in net. Vitek is an average goalie. And Schmid has pretty good, but still early. He has potential to be Swayman’s equal.

I think we have more pressing issues to solve with our blueline right now. But would revisit goalies in off-season.

If Boston believes they can sign Ullmark to an extension this would make sense. Mercer is more a winger but Poitas eases that concern.
The classic trading strength for weakness Hockey trade.

I think Boston might do that. I think they'd rather trade Ullmark but they could have two top 6 centers that are under 25. That could really set them up for the future.

It’s kind of interesting. I believe people are using 1 cap dump (Fleury) as a sign of goalie value. All the premium goalies in this league are locked into long term contracts and have been with their franchises forever. Swayman looks like the next premium goalie. The open issue is Boston has two of them.

I don’t believe Boston should trade Swayman. His production and potential is too high. I’ll take the dominant goalie for years, but I believe both players have high enough potential where they won’t be traded.

If you are willing to go into the average or below average pool for goalies, guys like Vanacek are always going to be available. Hes like having a solid third line center who’s paid like a second liner and the production is close enough that you don’t cringe. You take it, but you wonder if you could do better.

    Huh?

The past two years Binnington has been avg 3+ GAA per game and is below avg in save percentage. He hasn't really been that great since 2018 and 2019 - those two seasons are looking like aberrations.

Look how good he’s been this year for one
Last year he was the blues best player and was left out to dry every game

You gotta watch the games and look at his stats

No thanks, the forwards are not the problem its the defense. Stop hiding from the fact the defence has been bad. Boston is not trading either goalie.

If that’s the case, then Boston and New Jersey wouldn’t find common ground. The only expendable defenseman that could fetch Mercer is Carlo, but NJD are logjammed at RD. Boston would be trading from a position of abundance with Swayman for Mercer. That being said, NJ would be insane to trade Mercer this early in his career.

Boston moves Ullmark before they move Swayman.
