Fair enough about the season. Thinking Husso will be back soon and his contract means he'll play. Would a forward prospect be better?

I like McLeod and had pitched a deal for him last year. Not sure he can handle 2C minutes and this deal feels like it needs to be paired with getting at least a rental 2C for it to make sense this season.

Avs bottom six will be fine if they can get healthy and Kovalenko is what we think he is. Love Naz, but the Cup year was a one-off. He's a 60-point guy who's getting old.

Avs are thrilled with Wood as a third-line chaos causer. Not on the block, no way they'd trade him for such a low value, and better than pretty much everyone on Chicago who's not injured, so not sure why the shade toward him.

Bo can play either side, he's reasonably priced for two years, and watching Carlsson and MacTavish already playing better than I ever saw Zegras play (TBH have only seen probably 7-8 Ducks games in recent years), seems like Zegras has no place at center in the Ducks' future. If you want him as a top 6 wing, makes sense. But I would think Fowler would be a strong trade piece to a contender w/cap space and Byram would be your top or second LD w/Minty. And I know Fowler has an NTC but if he could win a Cup?

Trading Bo for a proven young 2C with term isn't dumping on him. I think Bo is fine, will be a top pair guy somewhere else, but won't be a top pair guy here. He's struggling and the need is a 2C.

I think Byram is who Toews called out yesterday: https://twitter.com/DNVR_Avalanche/status/1737350403879031183/photo/1 -- I'm getting of a mind that Byram for a 2C is the move, but not a rental like Lindholm. Feeling good about Malinski & Behrens in the next couple of years and then Gulyayev for combined salaries less than Byram will make alone.

Yeah... Olafsson isn't running with this opportunity and Cogs has even had to take some draws. I'd like to see Tufte, Holland or maybe even Pavel, who would keep the PK strong.

I think on offense, don't mess with what's working. Scored a bunch against a good Kings team, then got 52 shots off against SJ but the goalie just stood on his head. That's going to happen sometimes. On D, I agree but for another reason. I want at least one smooth skater on each pair. Worried about Manson/JJ getting caught flatfooted (if they're together).

Likely if Captain Returns
Quoting: NMAvsFan
You don't keep a bottom pairing D making $4.5M over a top 4 guy making $5M; the return isn't what's important, it's the cap space: trade Manson.
Amen. Avs should move Manson first. Return won't be great, but it's all about cap space. Let Johansen go at the end of next year and those two moves give them close to $9M in room. That maybe doesn't fully answer whether Bo stays and for how much, but imo we're still a ways off from knowing what Bo will truly be worth.
Behrens and Gulyayev will be the main factors for what happens 3 years from now. For this year, set. For next year, they're going to have to get rid of Girard or Manson. I know everyone would rather get rid of Manson but if you can get enough extra value in return for Sammy, that makes trading either one an option.

He’ll be worth the money and then some over the course of the deal. He’ll be worth $9-9.5 the first 3-4 years, about the aav for 2-3 years then below the last year or two. And just looking at the capfriendly home page, Owen power will make 1.1 million more a year over that span and buffalo is basically hoping he becomes toews.

I think you're really close. Flip JJ to the left and Sammy to the right. Malinski has played his way back to Loveland. Sounds like Cogs may start year on IR and Tufte will play 4LW. 4 center
I think the Avs probably feel optimistic about their 4C options after this preseason. Both Olofsson and Tufte look pretty good and once Meyers is healthy again, if he can get on a roll in the AHL, he could come back up for good. Pavel seems like a pretty good defense/PK guy if they decide they want that type of specialist at 4C. And while I LOVED this year's Avs draft and I think they may have just gotten their future 2C and 2nd pair D in their 2 first round picks, they still have an AHL team mostly of guys rejected by other teams. That 3rd will be one of their better picks in a while.

Lets Over-react to Game 1
Good thoughts. Some things to add on:
(1) Seems like they really like Tufte though. Even if Cogs isn't on IR to start the season, I could see them keeping Tufte up and him or Kiviranta playing w/Olofsson like they did today sometimes to keep old man Cogs rested.
(2) I think they put Frankie on LTIR for the first 10 games, give Juice 2-3 of those games and with the salary difference they'll have room.
(3) Yes -- no opening day Meyers. Keep him in Loveland with his 10 games left of waivers and build his confidence against AHL competition at the start of the year.
(4) And yes, I know they love him in the locker room but for God's sake no Dermy on this roster.
(5) We'll see if Schueneman, Malinski or Hunt decisively earns that 7th D spot over the next few preseason games.
(6) Still think Drouin plays with Mack on top line unless/until he proves he can't hack it, but we know the Bednar blender will flip him/Mikko/Lehky/Val around the two centers.
(7) I'm predicting, health willing, some 10-12 goals, 40-45 assists for Drouin and similar numbers for RyJo. I think they'll both do great feeding the beasts... 50+ goals for Nate and Mikko, 30+ for Val, mid-to-high 20s for Lehky.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>Not even close lol. Last year you lost Kadri, Burakovsky, Landeskog to injury amongst others and went from 1/16 in playoff goals scored the year you won the cup, to 13/16 last year, getting knocked out by an 8th seed in their second year as a team, who would go on to lose to the Stars, who would lose the round after.
This year you've somehow managed to make your forward core worse both offensively and defensively, with no player beyond your top line who even scored 20 goals last year.
Good luck I guess..</div></div>
You are either trolling or have a very high opinion of your own opinions. The Avs are keeping their 4 best forwards and the 4th line and for the other 5 forwards, exchanging Compher/Newhook/Rodrigues/Malgin/Nieto/Eller for RyJo/Colton/Drouin/Wood/Tatar. If you don't see that as an upgrade I can't help you. And if you want to compare to the cup year, Kadri never had a year like that before and never will again, and Burky's by far best years were here. This coaching staff is great and turns a lot of reclamation projects into decent players. And if you want to mock Lehkonen as "Montreal's 3rd line," I can promise you that with more guys like Lehky, Toronto would have won a Cup sometime since before any of us were born.

I could also see Pavel or Poulon (if not injured) start as 4C so they keep Meyers with the Eagles and take advantage of his waiver status. Meyers still has has a waivers exemption until he plays in 10 more NHL games.

Nylander
The whole concept is silly. There's no possible reason for the Avs to do this.
Makar has no current comps with Hedman on the downside of his career. Some D-men are close to him on offense, but no D both passes and finishes as well as him. Some D are a little better on D, but none of them have his offense.
Nylander is a star but there are at least 10-12 wings who can do what he does.
Even worse, Makar is under a friendly contract for several more years, and they'd have to re-sign Nylander for more than Makar gets paid.
Flip it around. Imagine someone said the Leafs should take Toews, a couple of firsts and a couple of throw-ins for Matthews.
Again, Toews is a star -- but at least 10-12 D in the league are as good. And Toews' contract is running out and he'll get a $3-$4M a year raise, while Matthews is on a reasonable deal for the next 4 years.
