What would you get? Keep it realistic...I was just aiming for a better playoff team with the money a bit better spread through the lineup. Could do a Murray move and get another player as well, but I was more focused on doing Marner and Matthews trades with this.

If Marber to the Caps, Toronto needs to take back 9+ in cap. Didn't Kuznetsov want out of Washington?</div></div>
That's just not an argument the cap difference isn't that egregious given their space and this trade doesn't stop them from making another move or 2 or whatever they want. We all know they are multiple moves away from a reasonable retool, or rebuild.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kuzbackov</b></div><div>At least they won something once, what’s the Leafs plan? They’re going to have to lose some trades to shed salary or they’re out of luck. Tavares is getting older and his contract getting worse, how do they improve the team that they’re not going to be able to keep together already?</div></div>
Tavares is the only player they would 'lose a trade' on because of salary and he's not going anywhere due to his NMC. If they trade Nylander they are getting great value for a 40 goal scorer under 7 mill. If they trade Marner they should get great value for a 100 pt selke nominee that's just getting better every year with 2 years left. If they trade Matthews they should get great value for a guy who is money in the bank for at least 40, plus a hart&ted lindsay, 2 rockets, etc. Marner, Matthews, and Nylander all get more than they are getting now on the open market as UFAs.
This team is just what I think would more reasonably happen as a general direction to improve the balance of the team. I would personally hit the reset button and trade at least Matthews and Marner. The goal would be to get very good young players that are more hard nosed and futures, then some guy to make the cap work out for a year or whatever is needed. Nylander could wait until the trade deadline since he only has a M-NTC on July 1...maybe they keep him maybe not. There is a world where Matthews and Marner are gone and they are still a competitive team in the playoffs. Their problem recently has always been balance, even with Tavares/Nylander/maybe O'Reilly they would have enough star power with what they get back from trades + free agency to compete.

Yeah a bit slower true, but a better playoff team. They aren't a wild card team now, or with this team imo. They look to be a 2 or 3 in the division with this roster in my opinion with better odds of going deep assuming they don't have some catastrophic injury issues.

If that's actually their plan that's wild. They can't do a rebuild around them in that case, so it's a retool. Not sure how they can make that team competitive. Will be an interesting offseason for them if they follow through with that plan.

This isn't a Caps team this is a Leafs team. Obviously the Caps would have to make more moves...and really they should make more moves. Or better yet, they don't do the trade and trade Wilson + more for futures. However, I see them trying to retool and try again with Ovi based on some of the moves they have made recently.

Capitals politely decline and keep their pick, time to start looking to the future and absolutely no reason to pay anyone $10M. Look at the Leafs. Having a bunch of Skill Forwards making over $10M is not how winning teams are built.</div></div>
I agree the caps should look to the future, but it seems at least with the moves they have made they are looking to retool and run with Ovechkin again rather than rebuild. This fits...not saying they will win or anything and it would probably need another move or 2 to actually be competitive realistically. I don't see them winning, but I could see them making a move like this.
I would also argue that Marner is a better fit on the Caps than the Leafs anyways, likewise Wilson is a better fit on the Leafs than the Caps. Leafs have small skill forwards in abundance, the caps don't.

Depends if they want to try for the cup or not, pretty good guy to play with Ovechkin+help the PK and no that's not an overpayment for a 100 point selke nominee with 2 years left vs 1 year left. If anything it's a bit light.

I've never had an account, but keep going back to that bad faith argument. Of course goalies go insane and beat teams, usually those teams aren't the better team anyways though. What's even more insane than that is believing that the CBJ that year were good enough to win a cup.
That year for CBJ, has to be a top 5 disaster year of poor decision making by management up there with the likes of NYI getting Yashin at that price and giving him and DiPietro those contracts they got.

More games you play the more the stats should level out if you're actually good. In a 6 game series, if they're a 950 your offense isn't good enough and/or you aren't making life hard enough on their goalie.

There isn’t a Jackets fan out there who wishes they’d traded Panarin and Bob at that deadline, finished tenth worst, and continued to be the same boring Jackets of the two decades leading up to that year. We wouldn’t trade the Lightning sweep for anything. Nothing traded away that year has accomplished anything, or have I missed Lassi Thomson becoming a megastar?
You know what’s a catastrophic failure? A Leafs FO who lost in five to a Columbus team with literally the same record as them going into the Bubble playoffs and then didn’t make any meaningful changes, lost to an even worse Montreal team in even more embarrassing fashion the next year, STILL made no meaningful changes, lost again in slightly more respectable way to the Lightning, made no meaningful changes, and now got obliterated by Florida. That’s a slow catastrophe.</div></div>
If you're asking what was catastrophic I don't know what to tell you. They bet on a middling team in a year when everyone good wanted out at the end of their deals, they knew it, didn't trade them for a ransom anyways, gave up even more futures getting an expiring deal, and have stunk ever since. You guys didn't just lose those futures, you also lost everything you could have got for Bob, Panarin, Duc, etc
Leafs have had their issues for sure, but not that bad with this group. Interesting that even worse Habs team made the cup final when the Leafs captain got his head knocked off his body in game 1 and the CBJ didn't.

You can't go off of where the teams they lost to went. If that's the case the Leafs lost to Habs (cup final), Lightning (cup final), Bruins (cup final), etc. and you would be calling the Leafs even better for losing in 7 to all of them with that logic.
That team was not good enough to bet on at all, the goalie was great, D not good enough, and forward core was very good but not deep enough for a cup.

Big cope, I wouldn't say that about most deadline deals at all because most deadline situations are completely different. If you step back and look at that team and their situation objectively, they had no chance before the TDL and didn't do enough to make themselves good enough after to have a chance. When that happened at the time I was completely shocked it was one of the worst deals/overarching team decisions I have seen in my life and it didn't age well either.

They have moved on in the five years since then. The team’s needs have shifted because unlike the Leafs who haven’t made any changes when they were warranted, Jarmo is reshaping his team. Trading for Marner now when Laine and Gaudreau are already here is putting lipstick on a pig. A dead pig.
No rebuilding team is giving you multiple high-caliber futures for anyone. Marner isn’t a foundational core piece, he’s a luxury finishing piece. He loves being a Leaf. Keep him. He’s not the problem with your roster.</div></div>
He's not necessarily the problem as much as he's the type of player Toronto does not need as many of as they have now and they need to have a more balanced roster. Plus he just hasn't figured it out well enough in the playoffs.
