Caps playing big ball adding Zegras and Byram

I wouldn’t oppose switching those prospects tbh. Both RHD are obviously a little more precious but you have to give to get.

Girard isn’t moving the needle enough for the Caps IMO to do a 1 for 1 with Strome who has been their best C for a year and a half with 89 points since the start of last season.

Tom Wilson is probably one of the most coveted players (of those rumored to be available) in the league and would bring back the edge CGY lost with Tkachuck leaving. Kuznetsov is a 55pts center at worst and gives you 70-80 pts normally. You could do A LOT worse for two players allegedly not wanting to stick around anymore.

Maybe not, but he has incentives to play harder this season, namely a contract extension. If not he can be flipped at the deadline with some retention for a decent pick.

Why hasn’t he been traded if there’s teams it there offering more? Ottawa is not in the drivers seat here, and there isn’t also a lot of teams able to take on his upcoming contract. Especially teams he’s willing to sign with.

I don't think they can. They only have Kakko signed as a RW and less then 10M in capspace.

The Devils forum at HFboards jumped at the chance of 8th OA for him which probably tells me that it's an overpayment. a later 1st + a 2nd seems like middle ground.
Agree on Newhook, I just felt that Kuzy would be a great match for the Avs and picked someone who could potentially help them along they way.

I obviously rate him enough to want him on the Caps, it's just that he hasn't exactly lived up to his potential yet. And I think the way Avs have acted (both line assignment and activity at the TDL) states that as well.
Landeskog-MacKinnon-Rantanen
Lehkonen-Kuznetsov-Nichushkin
That's a cup challenging top-6. Maybe the Caps could consider retaining 500k more but that's probably it... otherwise it eats up the possibility to ice a competitive roster for Ovie's sake.

I agree, it is. But I do think that the presence of Kuznetsov will get more value out of that 2nd line. If they bridge Byram and Malgin they should be able to put togehter a decent bottom-6 and upgrade at the TDL if necessary.

If there's room for him yes, but with Backstrom, Strome and finally a spot for McMichael (who's ready) I'd let him develop another year at Univ. of Michigan.

I could see Mantha playing well at RW opposite Huberdeau. Fehervary is decent, but CGY'd prefer Sandin (or even Alexeyev) coming back and if not, they really don't need an LD Replacement given they have Kylington & Poirier, so Jensen, McMichael or Lorio, would all be far more appealing as a return, even as Replacements for the Picks</div></div>
Yes, my thoughts exactly on Huberdeau. Ok, so what about Mantha (no retention), 1st 2025, Alexeyev (has higher upside then Fehervary), 3rd 2024 (Wild)?

Tatar, Boqvist, Sharangovich, Wood all have him beat this season. If NJD is going for it I doubt they go with the lesser player because of potential?

50-70 point center at 6M for “former 1st round pick, currently on the 4th line at the end of his 3rd year” with upside and a moving up 8-15 picks? Seems fair to me.

That 1C going to CGY has checked out mentally from the Caps. Yes, when dialed in he’s a 1C, but that’s only on rear occasions now a days.
Price is what you pay, value is what you get. I’d rather overpay for the right pieces then try to lowball patchwork fixing.
The ARI deal is more like 2 deals-in-1. Mantha + 3rd for cap space and Schmaltz + 2nd for CMC + 1st + slightly better 2nd.
It also about beating the competition for a player you want.

Connolly for Nyquist is fine, if cap space works. Bowey for Jensen hurts; the Caps have penalty killing experience are RHD. Need help at lhd, f.</div></div>
Burakovsky playoffs 49-8-8-16
Silfverberg playoffs 69-18-27-45
Silfverberg can play PK1 and PP2, Burakovsky plays neither.
Connolly for Nyquist straight up is not fine for Detroit, that’s why Bowey and Jensen is added. Pinho makes Detroit eat half is Nyquist’s caphit.

A New Caps and Jackets Deals
The value of the Caps trade is pretty much like you said, square. But the incentive for Caps to do it isn’t. Both Nisky and Willy have become leaders in the room and Caps are also pretty deep on LW as it is. Spurgeon and Zucker are great players but Caps probably won’t be able to afford both of them either.

I agree that Bura probably have a little more upside. But I’m betting on Vrana turning out even greater. Which makes Bura a little redundant and more expensive to re-sign then Silfverberg, who’s a lot better defensively and a right hand shot which is more of a weak spot down in the organization. Silfverberg also fits the PP a lot better then Bura.

Or, you know.. he could be re-signed if he’s a good fit, like Oshie and Eller. But yeah, Burakovsky might have a slightly higher ceiling and is Costcontrolled a little longer. But Silfverberg fits Caps PP2, is a good PK’er.
Also the playoff thing, Silfverberg has 45 pts in 69games, Bura&Connolly have 25 pts in 80 games amongst them.
