<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>For the goalies, Kochetkov has been amazing, particularly since the new year. Martin has been an insane pickup off the waiver wire, especially with the quality opponents he has been played against, and Freddie is expected to be back around now. So assuming they move Raanta, Lindgren isn’t going to be playing, so it doesn’t make sense to bring in a goalie. Jensen would be a decent pickup, though I would imagine the Canes would like salary retention to mitigate some of the risk that his age brings, as well as open up a little more cap space. Again those 2 1sts are nice, but unless the Canes use them in a trade, they don’t help now. The Canes biggest problem in the playoffs is offense drying up, though a healthy roster should help the Canes this year. But if the Canes do this, who are they replacing Necas’ offense (70+ points) with? Milano if the canes are lucky might put up 20-25 points. That is still about a 50 point drop off that isn’t being replaced.

Cup windows are finite, whether they are long or short is up to management. Canes want as long of a cup window as they can get. If the Canes don’t move Necas for a forward upgrade, like they need, then a futures package would have to be a considerable overpayment rather than just keeping Necas, especially if it’s a move within the division. Outside of Jensen, the Canes wouldn’t be acquiring much certainty at all with regards as to what they are giving up.</div></div>

All fair points, it’ll be interesting to see how things shake out for the Canes this offseason.

From your point of view, is there a trade with that Caps that moves Necas to the Caps with Ryan Leonard as the only untouchable piece?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>What about that package actually makes the Canes better? Swapping Raanta and Lindgren is whatever, but the Canes aren’t in any need for a goalie. TDA has been fine this season. I’m guessing his inclusion would be for contract limits. Alexeyev really doesn’t do much for the Canes, and neither does Milano. Jensen is definitely interesting, and so are the 2 1sts, but again, doesn’t really make the Canes any better now, and actively worsens the offense problem.

If Necas is moved, it’s for a forward upgrade with term. If a team is only going to offer futures, I would imagine since it’s not helpful now, the package would have to be a bit more of an overpayment to really get the Canes to bite. Canes need Necas’ offense now more than they need a pile of futures.</div></div>

I won’t argue against you because I’m sure you know the Canes better than me. And it may not be an instant upgrade like you said.
I don’t think that forward is available though (unless you have someone in mind?). But Jarvis to the 2nd line and Milano on the 3rd, with Orlov/Jensen as 3rd pair seems like at least not a worse lineup. Lindgren has been steeling games all season behind a really up and down Caps team. He’d probably be the 2nd best backup in the playoffs if he isn’t outplaying Kotchetkov.
I haven’t seen Raanta this year but is he reliable enough to step in if Kotchetkov is injured?

But if there’s a better offer or the Canes like to go into the offseason with the uncertainty of having to fit Teravainen, Necas, Drury, Martinook, Pesce, Skeji, Jarvis, Noesen, a backup goalie and one more player with $32M then this doesn’t make sense.
Milano at 1.9M, Lindgren at 1.1M and Jensen at 4.05M adds certainties going forward and allows the Canes to play a a little more hard ball in negotiations.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>qc14</b></div><div>On the first deal: I think despite what Leafs fans may say all of the pieces going to them in that deal make sense and would be great adds. The price though is way too high and you don't really see big package deals like that often. Given they don't have many mid-level assets, I think they wouldn't be the best fit for guys like Lindgren and Dowd. Could definitely see them as a landing spot for Pacioretty 50% retained for like a 5th or similar.

On the second: that probably gets Zegras done but I would be VERY hesitant to do so. I just don't see him as a real driver and for that price I kind of expect it.

On the third: I really like the idea and its intriguing but I honestly think that the Caps pass on their current trajectory. If Ovi was retiring after this year or wasn't close to hitting the record and they were going for a full on rebuild I love it. They aren't though, and I honestly think that for what the org is trying to accomplish the next 2.5 years Strome is more important than Byram -- he really is the Ovi whisperer and has been legitimately great for this team on a very friendly deal. If Byram was a forward I would say do it, but they absolutely NEED someone to play with Ovi.

From a COL perspective, I would take this and run. People are way underrating Strome here -- his age, his production, and his contract -- and he would be a pretty perfect fit at 2c for them. Mantha and TVR aren't nothing pieces either, especially 50% retained. Mantha has been probably their 2nd best forward this year and playing the best hockey of his career. A great middle 6 rental winger for a team expecting to make a deep run that desperately needs that. TVR at 1.5m for 3 years too provides great depth on the blue line and he can play either side. Solves so many of their problems this year (and for the next 4 with Strome) and while Byram has the potential to be special he hasn't quite been so yet and also carries a ton of risk given he's maybe one bad hit away from having real health problems.</div></div>

Thanks for taking the time to write all that.

I do see your point on maybe reaching on the return package. I guess I might underestimate Minten as a prospect, and I thought Leafs fans would think their 1st would be the 32nd OA, which is basically a 2nd round pick. And I know those packages of 4 roster players are rarely, if ever, seen. I just thought they fit the bill.

I admit Zegras isn’t a 100% fit of what Caps need, but his talent is unparalleled in the organization and hard to come by unless they go heavy tank which is unlikely. And players like him don’t become available very often.

I agree on your take and I think the organization view it like that as well. They kind of owe it to Ovie to remain relevant and Strome is probably more likely to contribute to that than Byram right now. But my reasoning here is the same as for Zegras, there’s no one in the prospect pool with his upside. And I agree that his injury history scares me a little as well.
The Avs are really dealing from a position of strength with their D and I’d assume they’d like a more balanced roster that kept them contending without having to do patchwork every TDL.
