I wouldn't have minded a deal based around Ratcliffe for Shaw in the summer with MTL.

I don’t thk Minnesota is giving up two top six wings for that return.

Cap Compliant Somehow
Let's be honest, you didn't acquire ROR just to play him at the wing did you?
IMO, your forward lines should be the following
Schwartz Schenn Tarasenko
Fabbri ROR Steen
Maroon Bozak Perron
Jaskin Barbashev Thorburn
Keep Thomas in the OHL for another year to keep developing his game (call up if necessary). I don't think it's beneficial to put a player of his caliber on the 3rd or 4th line, probably best suited as a 2nd line C to learn. You could play Schenn at top LW but he's young and a great C for the next 6 years for you guys.
I think you can try to move some guys and get a top 4 LD, that would help a lot. Other than that, I can see y'all making quite a solid run over the next few years.
I know y'all are linked to Habs rumours (i'm a Habs fan so I will address it) You don't need Patches. He would definitely fit in well but I don't think it's necessary. If you guys really are in for Price (which hurts me because I love him and think he will help MTL for much longer) you'd had to shed a lot of Cap like Allan and Bouwmeester, but it would cost you some top prospects
Anyways, loving the moves you guys did. Hope to see y'all make a good run. Cheers

I was agreeing with you, that was me saying its not a useless package bc I agree Thompson has chops to develop.

Speed & Skill
As we saw 2 years ago in the playoffs, Kevin Shattenkirk is not the answer, and as he holds a full NMC, there is no way I see him waiving it to come to Toronto. Similar to Justin Faulk, who is a good offensive-minded defender, a Shattenkirk/Faulk type defender is not what we need, especially since we already have Gardiner (for at least as long as he remains a Leaf). I would say Matt Dumba, though offense first, is a much more complete defender than either of those 3 mentioned above. However, what I would like to see is the Leafs take a gamble and make a play for Josh Manson. He provides you reasonable offensive output but remains a hard-nosed, good skating, defensive defenseman. Such a deal would probably require a 1st round draft pick, which I know the Leafs new regime does not like to give up.

Umm no there's been no report of him asking for a trade, in fact he said a few times he wished to remain in Ottawa but would not sign for anything less than what he was worth.

Karlsson + a little more
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ClockReads2113</b></div><div>Orlov a #3? Maybe #2?! hahahha that's funny. He was Caps #1 on the way to the Cup.
Johansen will be top pairing. He has all the tools. He's about to have a great year Hershey. Hershey's dcore was the youngest in the AHL last season, which is why they were bad. But we'll see I guess.
Karlsson is THE best dman in the league. Not top 5 or top 3, but #1.</div></div>
If you believe that Karlsson is the best d-man in the league (which I agree with), this trade isn't anywhere close. Orlov is a #3, with great offensive skills, and Johansen is nowhere near a lock to be a top 4 guy, let alone a top pairing guy. To get top players in the league, you need to give up good assets, and the Caps aren't getting Karlsson with that trade.

Karlsson + a little more
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mardzy</b></div><div>If Orlov was number one, why did two other guys play more and produce more than him?(in playoffs)</div></div>
One good way to compare players is by even strength points across a season. Erik Karlsson was first among defensemen, so THE number one defenseman, but Orlov, Carlson, and Niskanen were all in the top thirty, so the Caps won with THREE number one defensemen. These trades leave them with the same number, better offense, but much, much weaker defense.
Last year the Caps' five on three penalty killers were, as the year before, or the year before that, Beagle, Orpik, and Niskanen. Reirden brought Niskanen with him from Pittsburgh, and isn't going to let you trade him for someone who doesn't play defense very well.
Niskanen led the playoffs in shots blocked. He and Orpik stayed on the ice for the last 2:22 of the season to hold a one goal lead against six attackers. The Caps didn't even take a shot. Just iced it when they got it and tried to get faceoffs. Instead of looking for what you could trade Niskanen for, why not talk about how to get Orpik back? Should he be signed as a UFA or as assistant coach?
