ovie wants out

Lost Backstrom and Knutzy regressed faster than Ovie and his new center, Strome, scores more than he sets up.
Ovie badly needs a "wizard" to play with.
And yes, new coach, older age, injured, weaker shot and an unwillingness to adapt his game style, I said it before, Ovie needs to become a garbage goal scorer now, like Dino or Andreychuck, he can't sit still and blast pucks like Hull or Bossy and he isn't fast enough to skate into the zone and shoot like Gartner or Leflower.

TDL options
I love the idea of capspace + Monahan for Gauthier since I did something similar on new year's day:
https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/4785670
But IMO MTl is taking too much money back here. TB can keep Sheary (with a full NTC), and even take Wideman, and still be able to afford 50% retained Monahan.

Montreal should be sellers, but compared to other non playoff teams that don't many expiring expiring UFAs contracts that are appealing to TDL contender buyers. Maybe just Monahan might fetch a nice return, but really that's it.

Exactly, there is no incentive from the MTL side to do this trade with such unused cap space

Quoting: GeneralLandro

I think 1 for 1 is super interesting for both teams honestly

Edmonton has a reason to consider it. Montreal does not.
They don't need to move a contract (especially not if they are taking one back), they don't need a goaltender, they aren't contending.
Even if Anderson never scores another goal they have no impending cause to dump him. They'll overpay for an extra player with some usefulness until his contract expires or it becomes necessary to move him.
Everyone considering Anderson as a cap dump is ignoring the simple fact that Montreal does not need to dump cap. They are in good shape for at least a couple more years and have money coming off the books naturally during that time.

You're deploying Anderson RW2, in what world would MTL be adding? Also, you're not getting Monty without extreme overpay. That is not extreme overpay.

Habs laugh at that. Since Anderson is back, he will probably end up putting 20 goals this season again. A 20 goals scorer >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a goalie who can’t even be good in the ahl

Jake Allen is a HORRIBLE idea for goalie help for us
After a few decent games to start the season,
he’s back under a .900 save% for the season
In his last 5 games, he’s 0-4-1 with a save% of only .861
He’s reverted to the same crappy play he had last season,
when his save% was .891
He just isn’t good anymore
And hasn’t been so in 4 years now
Sorry to be so harsh,
but he really is just a horrible idea

Seems like a little too much for Montambeault, but my opinion may be colored by having been an innocent but too-close bystander to two of the more spectacular failures of guys (Jack Campbell, Cal Petersen) who played better than Monty before signing big contracts but then . . .

Montreal Canadiens signed Samuel Montembeault (3 Years / $3,150,000 AAV)
I've been tracking goalie contracts and deployment for a few years now.
For 2023 the Avg Cap Hit per Start = $88,758
For reference, I have found a range like this seems to hold fairly true for deployment (major injuries aside):
Workhorse Goalie = 59-72 starts (80% start rate or 4 out of 5 games)
1A = 47-58 starts (65% start rate or 2 out of 3 games)
Tandem = 36-46 starts (50% start rate; every other or "hot hand" rotation that evens out)
1B = 24-35 starts (35% start rate or 1 out of 3 games)
Backup = 10-23 starts (20% start rate or 1 out of 5 games)
Spot Duty/Call-up = 1-9 starts (injury fill-in from AHL, rookies on ELC slide, or the "old school" backup that only played in B2B games)
Cap inflation next year is expected to be around 5%; thus projecting a $93,542 figure (the actual will be less since many AAV's carryover; but the UFA/RFA's are unkown)
This means the $3,150,000 contract is roughly "average price" for 34 starts per year; thus an above average 1B goalie.
Another way of looking at is the Habs committed 41% of an average team's goalie budget to Montembeault.
In that sense this seems perfectly fine. The question for Montreal (a team coming off one of the most expensive goalie contracts ever) is are they trying to lowball the position (Avs, Kings, Coyotes) due to lots of pending RFA deals; or do they see someone else as their 1A long term (Primeau, Fowler ?).
The good thing about this deal is they have flexibility either way (and with lack of NMC/NTC).

Georgiev is a starter in Colorado and has been solid there.
Gustavson signed that contract coming off of a Vezina caliber season.
Vanacek I think was pretty highly regarded after leaving Washington. It’s been a minute though so I can’t really comment on that one.
Obviously the team in front of you matters, but this feels a bit rich for Monty.

Seems a little rich for Monty, no? I guess in the grand scheme of things it shouldn't matter too much with the cap expected to raise significantly. Plus, it's not like the Habs are tight on cap space at the moment
Glad he's sticking around with the Habs, he's got a good situation there. One of the better waiver claims in recent memory. Still see him as a backup at best though
