Very happy to have Monty around for three more years. He’s been well worth that price over the last year and a half.

Now trade Allen

Seems a little rich for Monty, no? I guess in the grand scheme of things it shouldn't matter too much with the cap expected to raise significantly. Plus, it's not like the Habs are tight on cap space at the moment

Glad he's sticking around with the Habs, he's got a good situation there. One of the better waiver claims in recent memory. Still see him as a backup at best though

But he wasn’t given starter money… this is literally market value for a backup….

Currently has the best 5v5 saves above expected in the league. Great signing by Hughes and Co.

Expected value was 3.5-3.75

Less than Georgev, Vanecek and Gustavson even if the whole 3 years are unrestricted. A steal.

Went Wugues did it again. Goalie trade coming soon now that no insurance policy is needed anymore.

This is backup money for a placeholder type of goalie if you have the kind of starter that you put out there for 60-70 games like Vasilevskiy and Hellebuyck. Montembeault won’t be a « backup » for the duration of this contract, more like a tandem goalie.

This is 1B money, and Montembeault is an elite 1B.

The deal is fair, don’t get me wrong. He plays too much to be just a goalie backup. He play as a starter even tho he should be a back up on a contender. The contract comparable would be Georgiev/Vanecek/Vejmelka/Driedger

Yeah, not to mention Jeremy Swayman, Filip Gustavsson, and Ilya Samsonov

With the cap going up next year I also think this is very similiar to Stuart Skinner, Anton Forsberg and Kaapo Kahkonen's deals.

Basically it's a "warm body" contract; not starter money but not backup money either. Sometimes that turns into a steal (Georgiev) and other times it turns into a problem (Forsberg) if they don't get 35+ starts a year at a decent level.

It's more than a fair deal if most comparables are more expensive. Fair would be higher than comparables because of inflation and UFA status (around $3.75M). This is a great deal.

Good signing. He's played really well behind a bad team and his numbers should show better as the team improves in front of him.
The cap hit is relatively reasonable, but the term is more important. We didn't over commit in money or term for a goaltender expected to carry the bulk of the load over that period.
If he ends up as the backup, it's still a manageable contract and we have a support if we run any younger goaltender (Primeau) during those years.

Have to think we will actively shop Allen or demote/trade Primeau once injuries start clearing up.
One slot is decided, so do you keep the vet around for another year as backup or give Primeau more games to hopefully develop?

I totally disagree. Maybe Georgiev but damn the defense playing in front of him can't be compared to MTL....

i think hes a top 32 goalie in the league right now. therefore shouldnt he be ''a starter'' more than a back up?

Good contract. I question how he'll hold up given his lack of pedigree (didn't really show anything until age 26), but he's worth this

Sounds a lot for goalie who had only one season under 3GAA in AHL and NHL lvl. All other 5 seasons are over 3GAA. This year is just started so too early to comment on that. Only time when he got below 3GAA was 20-21 season in AHL where he played only 13 game.

Georgiev is a starter in Colorado and has been solid there.

Gustavson signed that contract coming off of a Vezina caliber season.

Vanacek I think was pretty highly regarded after leaving Washington. It’s been a minute though so I can’t really comment on that one.

Obviously the team in front of you matters, but this feels a bit rich for Monty.
